I think the insistence on 2D being "outdated by 3D" lets the 3D Disney style age way faster than they anticipate (and also: it lets it age at all). I know artstyles will always develop and let older movies look dated in one way or another, but having 3D in general be regarded as "sick of and kinda outdated" is a stone they threw in their own glass house

I think it's especially baffling, that nobody talks about the fact, that Disney promotes Wish as their "celebration of 100 years with a blend of 2D and 3D", while the style is like 90% 3D and the backgrounds may be 2D in some scenes (when ooking at the trailer), while Disneys history consists of around 90% of 2D animation and only 10% of 3D animation. it just feels off in a way you don't want to see the movie because of this claim and the style it ended up with :/

There should be more actual full 2D animation, not 2D-3D hybrids like Spider-Verse. It's not creative, it's stupid. Sure, it might be easier for the animators, but the Spider-Verse style makes the characters to move inconsistently : one second they either move like real life realistic people or like classic cartoons, and the next, they turn to ridiculous, incoherent lines, blurs and zigzags that cease to move with any weight, and back again. It may be "artistic" but you know what else is artistic? Awful sloshes of color and paintings of abstract nude women that hang in art galleries for billions of dollars. I personally don't like the Spider-Verse style, because now, most companies only do it because its popular, not because of artistic integrity. Seeing 2D in 3D movies makes me more annoyed more than anything. They show they can do 2D animation but decide not to because they're afraid of it "not being popular". It's like teasing a horse with a carrot and taking it away at the last second... Over and over again.

I’ve had this opinion since the first Toy Story came out. 3d looks incomplete; it’s like we have a new technology but it’s not quite there yet. You get what I mean when you compare the first Toy Story with the last one: it looks dated, rough, unfinished, not up to the full potential. Well, that’s what all 3d movies look to me. While with 2d we have achieved perfection, the final state, the “this is exactly what it should look like” feel.

A few years back, I saw Snow White and Beauty and the Beast in 3d, and the way the different layers of animation stood out was incredible, and you only really get that layering with cels. Fun fact: originally Disney was going to have it where they would make a pattern of different styles of animated films where one year they would release a 2d film, and a 3D film in the following year. This was changed when The Princess and Frog and Winnie the Pooh didn’t do so well financially. Note: I would like to note that The Princess and the Frog isn’t the last 2D animated film Disney made, it was Winnie the Pooh back in 2011. But I would like to note that the reason why both movies didn’t do well financially was because Disney didn’t do a good job marketing them, and they were both competing with other films that came out around the same time. The Princess and the Frog was competing against Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakeul and Avatar, Winnie the Pooh was competing against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

It gives the said characters more oomph to their feelings and personalities, and they can show what they are thinking, reasoning, and feeling without necessary saying a word. Regardless of whether they choose to continue with 3D or return to 2D, I really wish Disney would experiment more with its storylines and animation styles. Somehow, I feel as if every single female-led Disney film has the same storyline or a variation thereof. Girl is something/wants something that goes against her family's conventions/expectations. Girl tries and fails to conform to family's standards. Girl goes on a journey of self-discovery and realises how amazing she is. Girl reconciles with her family, who realise the error of their ways and support her life choices. And while that is a great and valuable story in itself, I feel as if it has been done to death. I wish they would try for more variety with their female leads, or with their lead characters in general.

You can see the details in the paintings, it's fascinating! The characters can be really expressives and cute and the action is fluid in 2D. 3D is not bad but there's way too much of it. I just rewatch Lilo and Stitch this morning, had fun looking at the movements and buildings; the Surf scene was adorable and entertaining, when nani sing Aloha oe to comfort her sister it was adorable. I don't want to see this classic ruined with ugly 3D. I'm sure Stitch will look like Simba in his live version or like Sonic first design for his live movie. From Disney Classics between the 1920s-1990s, to Popeye, Looney Toons, and tons of other remarkable films and shows. Indeed, some modern computer generation animated films are brilliant. I think there’s two main factors of this: 2D animation requires lots of time, but more importantly, in America 2D animators are unionized and thus actually paid reasonably. that’s why most if not all American 2D animated shows have maybe the storyboards and rough animation done in America, but then the rest of the production is shipped overseas and outsourced to MUCH cheaper studios in Europe or Asia- essentially, *it would be more expensive to make a 2D film than 3D with all American animators now because they would actually have to pay their workers a living wage…* if you look at recent 2D western films from smaller studios like Wolfwalkers, Klaus, and My Father’s Dragon, none of them are made by American studios for this very reason (I believe they’re all European- the UK, France, and Spain/Portugal in particular are 2D animator hotspots there). also, because American productions aren’t looking for American cleanup artists and etc because those could just be outsourced to cheaper labor, people have suggested that it might be hard finding people to do the job at all since most artists would be much more experienced in rough animation and etc instead, but not so much in the later stages though I take this possibility with a huge grain of salt- I have seen MANY extremely skilled American 2D animators all over the internet and there are undoubtedly many more to come. (3D and VFX workers don’t have a union afaik although they desperately need one, and 3D is indeed less time consuming so they spend less money for less time. although 3D animation is often outsourced to Europe and Asia too…) edit: also just look at how much of a multimillion dollar industry 2D animation is in Japan, but then also look at how horribly the workers are treated, they’re paid literal poverty wages and have overworked to the point of suicide at times. (although recently China is also becoming an animation powerhouse and actually pays their employees sufficiently, and it’s gotten so bad that Japanese animators are moving to China for work, so this isn’t any sort of excuse at all.) *TL;DR the biggest obstacle here is capitalist greed.*

@@tulip811 read the rest of the reply- japanese animators are EXTREMELY abused, paid literal poverty wages and their deadlines are absolutely insane, many of them are so overworked that they have committed suicide. yes their productions are beautiful but the anime industry desperately needs reforms and better working environments and salaries. a better example would be china, who is also strengthening their 2D animation but they have better conditions and better pay, in fact so many japanese artists are leaving their native studios and heading to china for work that japanese anime is struggling finding workers (which no shit, nobody wants to work 80 hours a week getting paid slave wages…)

Could you imagine how disappointed Walt Disney would be in the current state of Disney? I just watched a documentary about his history and that dude was so gifted at collaboration, creating amazing creation's, finding the right people for the right things. They were TRULY DIVERSE, genuinely talented like we rarely see. Dedicated and Passionate towards creating imagination bending works of art and they Really did understand all the aspects and processes that mattered. For what it took to create those works of art. *(I just saw that Ukraine just started creating 2d animation for their military videos and it really reminded me of what I saw Walt do during WW2) I love seeing cartoon styled animated video's being used again. Just how Walt Disney did (out of his own pocket) he believed it was the least he could do for his country and his countrymen who were giving so much to the war to protect our nation and the greater good in the world. (If you think about it. Walt Disney did a lot for pushing advancements in science/creativity. He made understandable information that taught so many people of all ages, and from all sorts of different walks of life, to inform on very important matters and subjects of the time. Things that might seem out of place or difficult now, were completely relative to the current situations everyone was dealing with at that point in time. (The passion Walt gained for science and technology is what sparked his passion for Epcot and learning how to build all these cutting edge devices, city planning concepts, animatronics puppets of Abe Lincoln or the talking/signing birds in the tiki lounge. Plus all the other puppets on all the other interactions around his theme park. I just watched a documentary covering the career of Walt Disney and he really was a amazingly uniquely talented person. Where he himself had a insane drive towards innovation and new ideas BUT what I think his best trait was: That Walt was SO GOOD at interacting with everyone around him and he just had this amazing ability to find the PERFECT person for different jobs, things, roles. To really bring out the best in OTHER people around him. I truly believe that's one of the most important traits in a great leader. If anyone is in a group of people who are set on creating anything. (It's rare when someone comes across with the unique style and approach like Walt Disney had and really all it takes is to watch the coverage documentary that covers all of this uniquely awesome stuff that positively impacted SO MANY PEOPLE in so many ways and places. It didn't matter who you were, the chance that something from the Walt Disney era impacting you in a positive way is nearly 100% a possibility. There really was some of the best attributes of humanity, teamwork, and motivated passionate creativity that occured thru this group of Walt Disney era team members and we all could learn something from them. In some way or another.)

it's felt like the people who want to make the cheap 3d animation stuff is the executives who don't want to pay animators to do the work to hand animate things, when it's so much cheaper and easier to either do mo-cap or program the motions with software. feels like it's all down to cost cutting measures on the part of the executives in management, cause now that they aren't paying a bevvy of animators to make their movies, and have outsourced the hard work to dedicated sub-studios instead of doing it in house, they're making hand over fist compared to what they were making before, and to them, that's the only thing that matters, quality of the product be damned.

Kinda sad that the last theatrical 2D animated movie from any of the big guns was.............Space Jam: A New Legacy (a interesting flawed movie to say the least), and it was only half of it and before that, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water a 5 year gap between the two, and also only half of it Tho from what i head, some people also blame it on the early 2000s movies based on various cartoon shows (Rugrats, Doug, Recess, The Powerpuff Girls, Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberries, Clifford, Teacher's Pet, Spongebob, and to an lesser extent The Simpsons), because lead to some parents seeing the 2D animated movies at that time as cash-grabs their children could wait until the show airs or if it's actually original wait for it to get a TV show; most of which either never got a TV show like The Iron Giant, Titan A.E., and Treasure Planet (not like they could make a TV show out of either of those three) or not as good as the original movie (Atlantis) or simply often forgotten or not really brought up (The Emperor's New Groove, Osmosis Jones, Lilo & Sitich)

Even though the concept of Sponge Out of Water is that the main characters travel out of water and become animated in 3D, that does not happen until 2/3 through because why underuse Spongebob's traditional animation style on the big screen? It would not make sense for the main storyline to waste too much time overusing the gimmick of CGI animation above water without having the plot go anywhere meaningful. That is why it did not happen earlier than we expect it to.

That's why I didn't mind the SpongeBob movie Sponge Out of Water, once knowing that most of the movie was still the same 2D animation as the show, because of it being the other way around with the whole CGI/live-action part being a gimmick for a 2D movie instead. Disney has lots of money to make movies, they don't need AI.

I FIRMLY believe that technology has evolved enough as to create inbetweens for hand - drawn keyframes! Disney abandoned 2D animation because it needed too many people and time, but now, I believe they could train AI to make those tedious repetitive in-between frames, so they can have one key animator/character.

I think, that it's not the matter of style choises, or sukcesses of 3D movies over hand-drawed. 3D animation is simply cheaper, easyer to make and WAY easyer to add corrections.

There are very cheap 3D movies, but some of them are actually way more expansive than 2D hand drawn. Tangled was probably the most expensive.

The upcoming Nimona is also gonna use 2D animation based on the new images seen. There is a bit of 3D animation in there but the 2D animation overshadows it. Netflix seriously needs to market Nimona this instant!

A few weeks ago I watched the Anime Movie"Suzume"in cinema and it was breathtaking,I think Disney won't go back to 2D Animation because 3D is cheaper and Hollywood showed over the last years, that they don't thake Animation serious, because they think that Animation isn't for adultes. which is very stupid

Totally stupid indeed. Animation is a medium and it’s for everyone. It’s a way to tell a story. It deserves equal respect to live-action.

I’m pretty sure the old CEO hated 2d because he thought it was to childish… luckily that ceo is gone. Hopefully in the next few years we will maybe see a 2d animated Disney movie (I don’t remember where I got this info from so don’t quote me)

The film industry should bring back that style of Animation especially Hand Drawn,Me and my Shadow was supposed to achieve that Accomplishment but it never got off the Ground.

@@nicksorenson940 I read your other comment about Sponge Out of Water. That was as successful at the box office as The Spongebob Squarepants Movie from 10 years and 3 months before it. Sponge Out of Water is the closest thing we have to the successful hybrid experiment that Me and My Shadow was, but it sets a good precedent by doing it the other way around when the majority of Sponge Out of Water is animated in 2D, and the 3D animation of the Spongebob characters above water was the gimmick instead of the other way around, proving that Spongebob still has the massive cultural power to bring 2D animation back to the big screen. So did Rugrats and The Simpsons in their movies, but not Bob's Burgers.

@@nicksorenson940 Sponge Out of Water was great at flipping that around to make 3D animation and the stop-motion dolphin play second fiddle and third fiddle to 2D animation. Unlike Space Jam A New Legacy which turned the Looney Tunes characters from 2D to 3D animation halfway through, and did not credit its 2D animators, Sponge Out of Water had the decency to credit all four animation teams that it used on the film, and they blended their different animation styles together perfectly at different parts of the film.

I have always preferred 2D over 3D and have been wanting to bring them back for years now and it become the new norm again. I also felt the storytelling and characters were written a whole lot better too compared to the vast majority of 3D ones they’ve made over the years.
