It's great that you have horizontal hives, because it reduces the stress of the bees when you're handling the hive and also reduces the chances of accidentally killing bees. You should separate your hives to opposite ends of the bee yard to reduce the chances of bees drifting between the hives. The reason for this is because if one hive gets infected with pests, such as Varroa destructor mites, then you run the risk of the bees transferring the pests to the other hive when they're close together. Separating your hives can be the difference between losing one hive versus losing all your hives.

Loved watching your video about your new bees. So I’ve been sitting here, racking my brain, trying to come up with possible names for each bee group. After all, no self-respecting bee wants to remain anonymous! So I came up with two potential names: the Bee Gees, and the Beatles. I’ll bet that each group would LOVE to see their group’s name stenciled on their respective condos! How exciting! I’m looking forward to hearing all your adventures and bee stories in the coming weeks, months and years!

2 more tips Al. Face your Bee hives to the south so they get the most warmth they can get during the day. Also. You could build a portable roof cover for your hives once you've found a permanent place for your hives. Kind of like a porch roof to keep the sun from overheating them during the hottest days of summer & protect them from snow buildup, rain & wind during the winter because both these harsh climates can kill your hives. Just make sure they have good ventilation during the summer to prevent overheating & to stop moisture build-up (sweating) during the winter which could freeze & kill their hives. I'm so looking forward to watching your progress with your Bee's & your honey production. Bee's have always been one of my favorite homesteading topics because my Great Grandfather was a beekeeper. My Grandmother said he never got stung & he was a very calm, mild mannered man.

I used to keep bees and had a smoker but never used it, didn't need to. Use a feather from a goose wing to brush stubborn bees from your suites before taking them off, saves you from getting stung by a hanger on. Good luck with the hives. Nothing tastes better than fresh honey.

Talk about a flashback. When you went on your road trip and cut to the drive I knew those two red buildings immediately. I traveled that road many time going to my Dad's in Freedom NH from Buffalo NY. Glad you got Saskatraz bees. I'll be interested to see how they do. I'm getting back into keeping bees after 20+ years out of the hobby and plan to get Saskatraz bees next spring if I don't catch a feral swarm this year with a swarm trap. We are right in the middle of swarm season here so I'm hoping! Keep the info coming!

NOTE : for bees honey has a 6-12 months use by date, sugar water is safe i.e. no risks of spreading disease to your new hive or make them sick from the eating itself. Cleaning up the remainder after harvesting the honey from your frames can be ok, feeding old/older honey from a different hive is risky.

I really enjoyed this entire video, especially seeing the countryside on the road trip to get the bees. Watching the set up was very interesting and I found myself holding my breath at times, too. Al, you certainly seemed at ease handling them. ~ Gina, your recipe for mayonnaise is almost identical to mine except that I also add apple cider vinegar. Have you ever tried using coconut oil instead of avocado? I like it better, in fact, it's the only thing I use refined coconut oil for, everything else gets unrefined. I'll never buy mayonnaise again after finding out how easy it is to make fresh. I'm going to try that salad.

Best of Luck with those beautiful bees ! I read an article Many years ago ( early 1970's I think) about the decreasing bee population and it resonated with me. One old timer interviewed used down home logic when he stated that poisons weren't the only problem. In his opinion the over use and abuse of the land was not only producing low quality food for humans, it was depriving the honeybees of proper nourishment as well. That sounded like the wisdom of a superior intellect to me, and so it was.

Hope you will add a lock system to prevent predators (bears in particular) getting into and wrecking your hive and hard work. Also someone suggested extensions to the base of the hive legs to prevent it being toppled over in high winds or predators, I think it’s a great idea. Or strap them to posts driven into the ground beside the legs. Totally enjoy your You Tube site.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hi UK here, just finished watching latest video ( brilliant as ever ) and i noticed that now that you've finished the greenhouse their is a big difference between the level of your greenhouse and the level of your land, this is only a idea but would't it look nice if you put all those lovely big boulders you got around your property and make raised bed for veg or even flowers, and it would stop erosion of the soil around your greenhouse.

Lovely vidclip .... Having had bees in South Africa for Years ..... Bees will 'sense' your attitude and will react accordingly ..... Well Mostly .... There are Always those Absolute 'Rogue' hives that will come and 'fetch' you from away off .... :-) :-) :-) If you had a look at the bees just after they were transferred, you would see the home bees with their rear toward the outside, and wings 'flapping'. You will also see a little white 'dot' on their rear.... They are 'wafting' out a stream of their distinctive 'Hive Pheromone' sothat they can 'home' to their new home.... Keep well and Best you All from NZ

Great video. I just can not imagine that your season would be long enough to make any honey. We had bees in New York and California. We used a similar type of bee hive in The Philippines. Ours was called a top bar bee hive. I wish you the best of luck on your new project. It may be the best type of bees for your area. Gina will be great with the bees in just a few days. I am sure those bee suits are a bit hot when wearing them. Great recipe Gina. We have lemons and calmansi, a native Philippine lime, both trees in our back yard. I love salads and Gina is so great to share her recipes. God bless America. God bless our first responders, stay safe.

Your new bees are so cool. I cannot wait to see how they do. VW Family Farms had a bee inspector at their house. I know you have kept bees before but it might be worth a look see at their video to see if he gave any advice you can use. I love watching bee keepers. I admire all you are doing on your farm.

Busy, busy bees... and not just the hives. I'm thrilled you've finally got the hives going. Here's hoping they do well. I kept looking at all the wildflowers you have, and I can see the honey tasting wonderful. Plus, if they get to work in the greenhouse and on the Blueberry plants, it would be amazing. Nice looking mayonnaise dressing, Gina. Will be adding that one to my recipe list. Thanks for sharing. That 3D printed gift looks superb, and highly functional. Buttercup is really producing well, and looks fairly settled with her new routine. Even Willow looks to be getting calmer as the days go by. Hashtag, hope for Hope, may she get to join the milking routine towards the end of the year. 🤞🙏

Gina, I really appreciated how real your reaction was. I love the idea of beekeeping, but am scared of it as well.

Don't have bees but I'm planting lots of flowers along with the clover we already have. I've seen a lot more bees now. The barnyard bees channel has a lot more info on beekeeping info for newbies.

In 1874, General Custer explored the Black Hills, where we now live. On that expedition, a Grizzly was killed. Today there are no bears, black or Grizzly in the Hills, and haven't been here for a century or more. Recently there have been indications that black bears may be trying to repopulate the area.
