I want home ec back in school because we need a 21st century version of it. home ec got a bad rap because it was associated with gender related task pigeonholing. a 21st century home ec class will cover cooking, chores, home repair, car repair/maintenance, clothes mending and social media literacy, home privacy protection/identity theft protection/scam avoidance, financial literacy and budgeting/investing.

That's not true. People who don't like the idea of women wanting to stay home hated that mostly women were intrested in it. Boys could and would take the class. Most of what you suggest would have been covered in shop class or a basic computer literacy class. You are overloading the course with completely irrelevant things. Most millennials don't even know how yo cook simple dishes and actually think eating out every night is cheaper. Like a LOT of them. Because they don't know how to budget and buy what they need and cook in correct portions and use left overs. They are completely handicapped in home economics. And they are not young adults anymore. Most adults don't have 1,000 saved up for emergencies. They have no idea how to do simple budgeting. Poor people don't understand the importance of teaching young children basic math and reading at home. That school doesn't do everything for you. Poor children aren't learning to read and do math anymore. We don't need some woke economics that teachers us more unless crap we can learn from a 5 minute Google search. Young kids need basic. I mean BASIC life skills.

Just because something is "gender related tasks" i guess that means lowly women's work to you. Doesn't mean it isn't vital life information that our society can barely function without.

In the Caribbean Home Management is a must for students in the 7th and 8th grade levels. We get the option of choosing to do it in grade 9. If you choose to do it in grade 10 you can choose to focus on 1. Food, Nutrition and Health 2. Clothing, Textiles and Fashion 3. Family and Resource Management It's very beneficial to students. And has a lot of males doing it. It is very fun and I am very sure it will help me in the future.

Back in the day, home economics was a requirement and should be a requirement as well as Industrial Arts in every city and state. We need to teach our children and grandchildren to not only to teach them but the teachers to show students to empower themselves.

One of the towns we lived in, has Culinary Arts as an elective, and the class cooks for the entire school twice a month. They make awesome very healthy meals too.

Learn it yourself. You can teach yourself and then teach your friends. That's what my son did. I taught him. He taught them. Start out with a Betty Crocker cookbook preferably an older one. Just read it like you would a text book. And then do it. Learn about chickens. Learn about putting your own life together. Personal finance! It's all out there. Dave Ramsey is an excellent resource. You can make your own curriculum!

@@MetaLNadia severely limit your online and television time. Read books. Think for yourself. Learn skills. After a while it'll come naturally. It's all the media that's confusing you. Good luck darlin'.

I really wish we still had home economics. I know that we can learn how to do the stuff that they did in home economics (tbh i don’t know exactly what they did in home economics im pretty sure that they learned how to cook in that class though) during our free time but some of us (me) are lazy and maybe even busy so we don’t practice or learn how to cook until we need to . Plus i know school is about academics but to me home economics sounds fun. I would love to learn how to cook so in the future i have some knowledge about it.

Isn't it funny how home ec is beginning to come out now (as it should) as like a huge chunk of, well, "Adulting 101"?

When my niece, nephews, or godson come over my house, our bonding time is me showing them a new life skill--language, etiquette, culinary, home repair, how to change a tire, etc. Home Ec isn't in schools anymore, so I make it my business to teach the next generation of students in my family.
