I live in Singleton Heights and the amount of new homes built with turf laid straight on top of clay or at most 50mm of some sort of topsoil is heartbreaking. When we built our home 26yrs ago I had 250mm of clay dug out and filled with good old hunter river loam which was easily obtained in them days. Its the stuff dairy farms and turf farms live on. Our santa anna couch has never regretted it. Retains the moisture on top of clay and drains excellently. through the hottest summers a weekly water is all it needs.

You could also aerate before laying the underdress!!. Helps retain water and air pockets right down under the roots!!. You can even throw a sneaky light slow release fertiliser which gets into the aerated holes with the loam. Awesome job on the project, can’t wait to see that work pay off!!.🤘🤙🍺

Man, you should see my lawn! A month ago I bit the bullet and dethatched. SO MUCH crap came up .. I filled my 7x5, 3 foot walled box trailer. Amazing. And it's only a relatively small lawn, about 70sqm. Only a baby lawn! I added pre-emergent, about 20 boxes of seed, 12t top quality triple washed sand to level, NPK+Fe and castings and water! A month down the track and it's totally luscious and I don't think I have ever seen a healthier shade of deep green in my life. It's thriving. I have you to thank. Thank you.

@@theaussielawn Cheers mate. I took a risk having never done this before and it paid off. SO dramatic! And I had the neighbors talking, they thought I was mad having "ripped up my perfect lawn" haha But it's so much more healthy now and will be for years to come. Only with your advice, mate. Again, thank you.

Wow, I'm impressed how quickly and easily you seemed to level that lawn area. I have an area that is about 80sqm, and took ages..... I mean a couple of days back and forth with wheelbarrow's of dirt and big lengths of skirting board dragging it back and forth trying to level it all out. Then after I put my turf in it's all over the place again, so you can't win!

Sir grange looks great when it's on, first 2 tears mine looked great. Then last summer gave it a scarily and top dress in Nov and it took so long to come through a light top dress and never really kicked on. The shaded areas went super thin. This season I have done a low hoc and given it all the good stuff, plus lime as ph was low it just is so slow to grow back in. My point is it's average looking in winter needs a mow once a month but come spring it so slow to take off and if you give it a renovation it loks garbage till January m. A Bermuda like iron cutter would be my choice if I could do it again.

@@nevilletisch9637 sorry to hear you are having some struggles getting SGZ to shine . I’d hold off on scalp mows and the like till it gets back on its feet. SGZ does best when mown around 15-25mm under that it will open up a little and look a bit rough when conditions aren’t ideal
