Bringing My Kids Back to Where I Grew Up - Towing Canoe with Motorboat & Portaging into Private Lake:
This past weekend (early May 2023) my wife Tori and I took our kids camping. Our new National Geographic show Home in the Wild has premiered in the US. I decided to take the kids back to the area I grew up to camp, fish, and hike in the places I've been going to ever since I was a little kid. We towed our canoe with a motor boat for the 8km boat ride to a trailhead, a portage trail into a spring-fed, backcountry trout lake. It was quite the ordeal portaging into it, particularly with my son who has disabilities as he needs to be wheeled in in a collapsible wagon. The weather was good and we enjoyed several meals cooked over the fire, Trout fishing, and hiking, including a trek up to a beautiful lookout point. In this video, I share a lot of the beauty of the area as well as some interesting things about nature. You'll probably get a few laughs too. Enjoy!

My favourite. That hotdog cooking. Toris cooking style brought back childhood memories. Here in Finland that style is called "naurava nakki", which translates to laughing hotdog. 😀

You’re very welcome. Ya, at his last check up, the doctor asked me if he could walk while supporting himself with furniture. I showed here a video of Huddy snowshoeing and she was amazed. She says it probably because of him getting used to walk over routes and rocks on our camping trips.

Have you guys ever thought about getting like a Johnny jump up? You can put that sucker up anywhere with a little ingenuity and that would be so good for Wesley’s legs And keep him up and busy . Hell both kids will love it. It is a great little thing to have check it out if you have time. It was so great to see Wesley standing. And if you had two Johnny jump ups, you could fix these things with the tree limb across two trees and keep both of the kids active and safe while you’re trying to load up or even fishing cooking or anything it’s like a little jungle gym .I’m telling you they are bad ass. And they’re fun for the kids. My daughter left all the time in it because you can jump up and down spin around and you exercise with your legs , check it out from Love love love you guys.👊💖

I have to say you have the perfect wife for you. She’s amazing woman. I watched your winter camping and thought omg I don’t know if I would have done that back when my kids were little. We camped from Ontario to Calgary in June with two children and hit black fly season. Oh my gosh, it was terrible. But the camping was beautiful , one of my fondest memories. I’m 79 now my husband’s passed but a wonderful memory.. You’re making a lot of wonderful memories for you and your family..

That was great! Reminds me of camping trips with the kids when they were little (especially the blowouts just before you're ready to head out!!). My favorite part was Huddy crying because you put the frog back in the water without a life jacket or boat. Absolutely adorable!! When Wesley laughs, his whole face lights up and you can't help but feel the joy radiate onto you. Yeah, brings back lots of memories.

I have camped with my special needs daughter, her whole life… She’s 42 and we’re still going strong. She is full care and simply loves it. I don’t back country like you, but I’m usually by myself. I rigged my van for her and I tow a teardrop. I love this special time with her.

I did the same thing with my kids even before they could walk. In Queen Elizabeth 2 park Best memories of my life my kids are 30 and talk about it a lot sad but there husbands are not like you or me .I would do it with my Grandkids but pushing 60 with bad back problems 😢😢😢 great to see hopefully get 2 watch the kids grow up on film i have video's of most of the trip 👍

I’ve replayed the vid starting at 44:30 with Jim talking about the great family day, steaks going on grill, a bird that looks like a “plane” according to Hudson, Wesley chit chatting with Tori,….but around minute 46:00, i swear Hudson is saying “Montreal” after Jim asks Tori about the steak seasoning. Great video, watching the kids thrive out there is awesome! I'd recommend the hammock for your solo trips sometime, you might find it hard to go back to sleeping on the hard and uneven ground.
