Yes! This year have been exceptionally warm. My phals are just starting to spike too. And agree with the leaves. My phals producing spikes leaves aren’t turning yellow . But during the growing season one phal had a leave turning yellow. So yup it depends on environment and what the phals mood are .

I love you Phalenopsis collection. Cannot wait for the blooms! I am slowly building my collection along with cattleya which I find have become my favorite- although all of mine were mistakenly purchased as seedlings- they are doing great - thanks to your informative videos

Thanks for this video Danny. I was really looking forward to hearing about your phals after your experiment putting them outside. All mine in Spain just started to spike. Regards

Enjoyed your video. I am slowing transition my phals from mounting back into pots. And, I'm trying potting in stalite. (I have one mini that I moved to this medium about a month ago. It is thriving. Hence, my desire to try this for other phals.) We've had cooler night temps here in s. FL USA so I hope that will encourage these orchids to flower. Thanks for your helpful videos!

Danny, I have LED shop lights, similar to your lights you are using for your phals. My phals are growing exclusively under my LED shop lights...no natural sun light all all. And, I'm getting lots of roots, leaves, and flower spikes...all at the same time! All of my phals are completely hybrid, flower shop or grocery store phals. I'm in Indiana, USA.

Hello Miss Orchid Girl-I have watched quite a few of your videos and found them very helpful. As my small collection has grown, I have found myself searching your channel whenever I need help with how to do things. So thank you very much for all of the good advice and help you have already provided! I do have a question for you. I recently received a lovely Phalaenopsis covered in blooms. It has two flier spike with multiple branches developing on each spike-so many more blooms on the way. However, this orchid was purchased at a grocery store and is packed in Sphagnum moss only. My plan was to wait until it finished blooming to repot it. But if all of the spikes/branches develop fully that it going to be quite a long time from now. I have hardly water this orchid in the past month because the moss stays so wet. I’m worried that the roots are suffocating -I can’t really see them because the moss is so tightly packed. I have repeatedly heard and read that I should not report until it finishes blooming because the flowers will drop prematurely. Please help! Should I go ahead and repot or wait? And if I should repot it now, is there anything I can do to keep my blooms? Thank you very much for your help. Beth

Hi Danny. Sounds like a terrific experiment. Nice part of the winter 🥶 is, in another three months will be spring and now is the time to prep. In this part of the continent we’re spending time with family and friends in the thanksgiving season. Hope you might do the same as the winter season is approaching.

Hi Thomas, we don't have thanksgiving here, but we are very close with the family so we have meals together very often, so we're lucky 😁 wish my family could be here all the time, but it's not something I can control ☺️

I tryed growing mini phals (store bought) outside this year and in June, in 2-3 days, they got sunburned, with morning sun. Would be interesting to see how you do it with the big ones.

Hi, I will be making an update on those, I cannot see much of a difference or improvement really. It doesn't harm anything, but it doesn't do wonders either :p

Hi Danny - I took your cue to put my "kids" outside when the temp is 60-64 F and some are spiking :) My question is if you think if it makes a difference when they are exposed to those temps, day or not? And would the length of time they are at that temp during the 2-4 weeks matter much? I haven't been able to find this information anywhere online. How soon after a blook can a Phal start to spike or rebloom? Btw, are you sure that regular flourecent shop lights will be effective? I've heard they aren't.

Your collection is lovely. I have 1 large phal that is in its second blooming of the year which I wasn’t expecting but is great. I got some new mini Phals shipped to me today, all are in spike and 1 pot had 2 plants so it’s nice and bushy, I can’t wait to see the flowers. My problem phal is one I’ve had for almost 3 years, it hates growing roots, it’s grown 3 new leaves but has never bloomed and oddly as soon as it grows a root, the root dies off. I’ve tried every different kind of potting medium I can think of an honestly, I might be ready to give up on this orchid, it’s just too disheartening when I think it’s finally getting better and then the roots die off again. Ugh,

Hello Danny, I’m a beginner to orchid growing, but thanks to your wonderful videos I think I have been able to save three - one was a gift, one was a garden shop ‘rescue’, the third belongs to a very sick friend. I really love the ‘rescue’, and can you identify it for me? It appeared in one of your videos. How can I send you the photo? Thank you again, very much!

Please help. Two of my phals have some sort of tiiiiny insect on some of their roots. They are on those roots that dont look good anymore. But the plants look good and one had even a flower spike growing. I dont know what to do please help🙏 They are white, very tiny dots, dont fly, i dont know if they are spidermites (there is no spider web anywhere) but if they are spider mites how do i treat those roots?

So, I made a mistake to refresh the chips on my orchid. First, cuase it's been along time I haven't. Two, is blooming and I figure it could be nice to help her bloom more. In the process, I found out that the roots inside were rooten n the only ones that were good were the air ones. I still replanted and now I'm losing my blooms cause I cut the bad ones, but end up only with the air ones. I did not tucked them in, I left them out. I don't know what to do. Also, one of my other orchids is losing her flowers. They still look new, but they are limp, also happend after I change the chips. Help!!
@chanteuse19785 жыл бұрын
Nancy Paiz you did the right thing. The rotten roots weren’t doing the plant any good and it probably would’ve lost it’s blooms anyway. Keep the new media moist (not soaked), stale the plant for stability and it will eventually grow new roots.

My phal is blooming for the first time in two years. However, I noticed it's leaves are looking less healthy than before - A little limper and maybe yellowing in progress. What now?
@virginiacactus78015 жыл бұрын
I noticed a lot of your phals have multiple spikes. Do you do anything in particular to get more than one spike per phal? Mine have only ever grown one at a time. I know a lot of shops use hormones to make them more appealing to buyers, but I am not sure if this happens naturally under specific circumstances. Thanks!
@Rinsuki5 жыл бұрын
It does happen naturally. It depends on the genetics of the orchid. If you don't clip the spike of your phals they will let you know if they are going to keep more than one spike. I have species phals and hybrids that do what they want basically. Even if I clip a spike a little and not the whole way, if it wants to keep blooming from that old spike it will grow a smaller spike from the old. I find that the species phals tend to keep their spikes so I have some that have three or more spike that it holds onto and will bloom on all of them periodically, but I've also had some that lose a spike and get another spike. I find if you keep your environment fairly stable and they get consistent feeding and watering they will have enough reserves to produce multiple spikes.
@allyyyyyyp5 жыл бұрын
So glad your schilleriana is producing a spike! I remember you were figuring out its growth before. Do you feel like your variegated phals don't grow as well as the other hybrids? I have a sogo vivien that has just not done well/doesn't grow at all since I repotted her last spring.

Hi! I've got those ugly pink painful for the eyes leds (2) as I'm on a northern exposure 😞 I've got some brightness in summer thanks to white buildings and their windows facing me but cold seasons are very gloomy...so here's my question : Up to which distance approximately would you say that this kind of leds are effective? My furthest plants are about 40 cm away from the bulbs... Would 4000k lights as yours be more powerful and effective than the pink ones? When you look for info regarding this on the internet it gets too complicated too fast, more specialist oriented than small grower oriented...
@MissOrchidGirl5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I understand how it can get complicated, so I guess you wouldn't want me to go into the PAR thing :p ok, a debated way of figuring how strong the light is, is by looking at the lumen output. That is just the visible light though. However, as much as others will disagree here, when it comes to shop lights this is all wee need, since they are not full spectrum. So, the more lumens it says on the packaging, the brighter it is and the further away orchids can be kept. I would go at 20-30 cm away for maximum brightness, 40 cm is still ok for Phals and lower light orchids. For example, my 120cm panel is about 5500 lumens. At 30 cm distance max from it, my Brassavolas develop red pigments, telling me they consider that bright light and that's great with me :) but this output is spread on length. Just go to the shop, see what they have, see what your eye thinks it's bright and check the lumen output. I really see no need to go into expensive grow lights, LUX, foot candles (very misleading, you'll find orchids growing awesome at 500 footcandles, which in theory it's impossible) special other spectrums for Phals and many other low requirement orchids. Good luck! 😁

How long have you kept the phals in the lower shelf with just the Leroy Merlin lights, and have they bloomed in that setup? Ilwe have those lights here in Portugal and even cheaper www.leroymerlin.pt/Produtos/Iluminacao/Focos/Focos-de-superficie/WPR_REF_17940006 ) and i also hate the pink lights. I have some t5s and I've been looking into the sansi grow lights, but they are 40€ a bulb, so if these could bloom my phals, or even my bulbophyllums and paphs it would allow me to keep them in areas with no light :)

Please help. I have been using clear pots for my phals and have had them for a year or 10 years. Just now one of my phals has algae in the pot. Can you tell me how to prevent this and do I need to empty the pot and the media to start a new growing situation for that pot. The clear pots have no outer pots. All of my other orchids are thriving in them and I can see beautiful root growth through the clear pots with lots of holes for air circulation. Thank you Danny.
@MissOrchidGirl5 жыл бұрын
Hi, algae naturally occur where there is water, light and nutrients. To limit algae it's enough to cut down light, by using decorative exterior pots. However I believe the algae you see are just a side effect of a more pressing issue: old, degrading, soggy media. Orchids need repotting periodically and given fresh medium. This should happen every 2-4 years for good quality media, which is not prone to fast degradation. Here is a more detailed tutorial kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYipqoSwf8d6esk
@Barbara631215 жыл бұрын
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you kindly for your reply. I have watched your discussion of algae and am not so worried about it now. It is a little bit of algae in a plant that hangs close to the window. This is a rather new little phal that I repotted about 2 months ago with fresh medium (moss, charcoal, small wood chips). The plant is very happy with firm leaves and is already beginning it's second blooming thanks to a blooming fertilizer. I do love to watch the roots grow but am thinking I may have to get some opaque pots when the algae shows up. I did notice that you have many transparent pots in your collection, which are placed inside plastic opaque pots. You are such a fine teacher and do a great job of explaining the reasons for what you do. I thank you for your guidance and your kind help.
