Actually, the 300 sorts of bread is an old estimate, when nobody bothered to really count the sorts of bread. Nowadays there is a German "Brotregister (bread-register)" by the Deutsches Brotinstitut (German Breadinstitute), which counts 3551 different sorts of bread. Of course, you won't find a bakery having all 3551 sorts, most bread is specific to a certain region, like beer, where we have 8135 different brands. (Biermap24 , Biermarken Liste). The number of citizens is 84,607,000 (Sept.30th, 2023)

its even more all Anglo and Saxons are in a way related to Northern Germany (which is also the birthplace of Proto-Germanic) and Netherland/Denmark region (also Jutes etc.). And also Proto-Celtic culture has its origin in Austria(Hallstatt)/Southern Germany regions. And nearby eastern regions is where proto-Slavic and proto-Italic (later they moved over the Alps to Italy) came from. The entire Central European region between Germany and Hungary is the origin of one of the two major cultural branches (the other was in today Anatolia where Greeks, Etsruscan etc. branched of) of the Kurgan/Indo European Meta Culture. Also France (much later) got its name from a Germanic tribe confederation (built out of other smaller and older tribes, thats why confederaton) - the Frankish tribe - West-North Germany, Netherlands, Belgium region ...

I agree that people can switch, there are always circumstances that allow one to switch depending on their own ambitions and skills. However I don't think Gesamtschuke works like that, or there might be multiple types. In mz hometown we had one seperate gymnasium and one gesmatschule ( I went to that one). Yes, every type, gymnasium, real and haupt- schule + so called "förderstufe" ( support and envouragement class with kids that could not yet be sorted into one of the types) was there but we had seperate calsses and didn't learn together :o regarding the switching, I've known someone who graduated from hauptshcule and worked and took extra classes afterwards to get to " realschule", and the to get his Fachabitur. Abitur is usually a few schoolyears more than other schooltypes, so you don't loose toooo much time if you graduated from real- or haupschule choose to try and make up qualifications to get a upgraded certificate. abitur=the highest graduate certification, you get it after you finnish Gymnasium; Fachabitur = majorspecific Abitur qualification, meaning you can apply for university majors within that choosen field, however no other major outside of that chosse field, there are a few fields like " health and socials" or "economics and administration", "design" and "technology

2:26 First correction: The Holy Roman Empire consisted at first of two Kingdoms (the German Kingdom and the Kingdom of Italy), in 1033 the Kingdom of Burgundy (also known as Kingdom of Arelat) joined the Empire, in 1158 the (non-German) Duchy of Bohemia was elevated to Kingdom (and got Moravia and Silesia as fiefdoms), and in 1238 Emperor Friedrich II made his illegitime son Enzio King of Sardinia (which was before that ruled by the Republic of Genoa, which was part of the Empire). Emperor Friedrich II was also King of Sicilia and Naples, a heritance from his mother Konstanze, the daughter of Roger II, Normannic king of Sicily 1005-1154, but neither Sicily nor the Papal states were part of the Empire as the map suggests. The Kingdom of Sardinia got lost to the Kingdom of Aragon (Catalonia), the Kingdom of Burgundy was given as fiefdom to the Crown Prince of France, the Kingdom of Italy was lost after the 30 Years' war (as also Switzerland and the Netherlands became officially independent). The Holy Roman Empire was dissolved due to order of Napoleon who then created a bunch of new kingdoms, like Württemberg, Bavaria, Saxony, Westphalia - but those were no kingdoms within the Holy Roman Empire. The kingdom of Prussia started out as duchy within Poland and became independent due to the Polish-Swedish wars, before it declared itself a kingdom and allied with Russia and Austria to divide the remaining Poland between them. It was also never formally part of the Holy Roman Empire as the map suggests, even if its predecessor, the State of the Teutonic Order get support from the Emperor for its claims of independence against Poland during a short period of time. 4:00 Yeah, 40 years. The "death strip" along the border was nearly abandoned then and forms now a "green band" of nature conservation areas. 5:06 The Valhalla was erected 1830-1842 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria (whose wedding with Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen spawned also the Oktoberfest, which is actually the anniversary of that wedding) as symbol of a reunification of Germany after it was split in different kingdoms by Napoleon (including Bavaria - Ludwig's father Maximilian I was actually an ally of Napoleon, and Ludwig led the Bavarian troops during the French-Bavarian occupation of Berlin). The Valhalla houses busts of persons who had in his eyes acquired merits to Bavaria or Germany; later other busts were added, e.g. of resistance fighters during the Nazi regime. 7:15 But most of those tornadoes are rather weak compared to the Amercan "tornado alley". By the way: England has also its own "tornado alley". 7:24 That is wrong. There are over 3,000 registered kinds of bread. 8:03 Rouladen is beef. Sauerbraten is beef or horse (for the original Rhenish sauerbraten they used mostly the meat of old horses or pit ponies, which had to be marinated in wine and spices for some days to make it tender enough). 9:05 There are no free living bears in the Black Forest yet. All bears in Germany came over from Austria to Bavaria in the last few decades or so, and none has moved farther west. 10:22 The numbers are a bit outdated. Currently there are 84.7 million people in Germany, about one million of them however refugees from Ukraine (which adds to about 1.2% of the population). 11:02 Tuition-free for EU citizens. Some states like Baden-Württemberg have (small) tuition fees for citizens of (most) non-EU countries, some states have also small tuition fees for second degrees. 11:32 Frisian is spoken in Friesland at the coast of the North Sea; a small part of Friesland is also within the Netherlands. Romani is the language of the Roma (or Romani people), an ethnic group of Indo-Aryan ancestry, which immigrated from North India to Europe around 1000 AD after the muslimic conquest of Pakistan. In colloquial English they are often called gypsies. Plattdeutsch is generally Low Saxon, but sometimes also used for some Middle Franconian dialects (Low Franconian would be Dutch, Middle Franconian encompasses the Lower Rhine, the Ripurian dialects, Moselle Franconian, Lorraine Franconian and Luxembourgish). 12:15 Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht, the traditional type of Carnival celebrated in the Southwest. More of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGGXnWWQnct6qck or kzbin.infoQIlVOV-UNPg 12:35 Cuckoo clocks are not from Bavaria, but from the Black Forest and were there mostly produced for the export to England. 13:18 Auf Wiedersehen is the formal goodbye. The Bavarian Pfiat di Gott translates to "may God guard you", the different variations of adjuus, tschüss, adieu and ade go back to adaptions of northern French "á dieu" (to God) at different times in different regions. There is also the greeting "Grüß Gott" (greet with/by God) in southern Germany. 13:37 Those really long words are artificial constructions designed by some law makers as "short titles" for minor and short-lived laws.

15:30 you don't really decide yourself. the way GeoNow described it is a bit euphemistic. in reality, it's all really decided by your elementry school grades, the top third go to a Gymnasium, the middle third to a Realschule, and the bottom third to Hauptschule. you are not forced into those categories, but it is strongly suggested by the teachers which path would be best for you. also, if you finish 10th grade at a Gymnasium (which goes up 13), you automatically get a Realschule degree without having to take any final exam, and you could in theory just quit and start a job with that. and those with a Realschule degree can apply for a Gymnasium to get their Abitur (High School Degree) and move on to a college or university. it's overall not a very rigid system.

- You may find bears only in german zoos, the last wild bear that entered germany in 2006 from the czech republic, was called JJ1 or better known by the name Bruno, he was declared by the bavarian government as a "problem bear", because on his trip he ate some domesticated animals like sheeps, after some attempts to catch him alive that did not work out he was finally killed. -The cuckoo clocks are not from Bavaria, they are from Baden-Württemberg, more precisely from the Black Forest region. -There are over 3000 types of bread or buns in germany. -Lower Saxony is called that not because of the position to Saxony but because of the lower altitude. -the witch masks are connected to the local carnival traditions, there are carnival groups that take part on a carnival parade and every group has their own typical costumes, some of those masks shown are made of wood and are passed on to the next generation, so some of them might be very old, others are brand new, but made in the same way as the old traditional pieces.

The school thing is slowly changing in Germany. The thing is that it wasn't really your 10 year of self that decided which way you wanted to go, it was a decision made by your parents and teachers according to your performance at school up to that point. If you were bad at maths and other subjects you were predestined to go to Hauptschule which then made it very very difficult for you to ever enter into university. At the same time Hauptschule gave you one opportunity no other type of school had and that was leaning actual life skills. Depending on the school you would learn how to work with wood, cook, do small repair works, write an application, do your taxes and so on - which some people with a university degree in Germany don't really know how to do. The idea behind it was that if some kids were having trouble learning abstract things like maths or additional languages they would be left behind at schools that predominately wanted to prepare children for university. And while going to university is all good and nice, the actual economy is build on working class people/people who know how to work with their bodies and hands. Of course that's problematic, because it basically tells a 10 year old "you will never be as good as _these_ people. You are stupid. You can only go this way - or have to fight like hell to get on that other track currently unavailable for you" but at the same time that's only the case because university jobs are usually better payed and we live in a society were we think the person who tells other people what to do is worth more than the people who actually do the work. Now like I said, this is changing. For the past years there have been less and less Hauptschulen and more and more people are entering university which lead to a lack in personal in those jobs that actually keep society running and to compensate for that our universities started to turn jobs that were usually taken by Hauptschüler into university jobs minus the actual experience. It's a bit ludicrous at the moment. Having a university degree basically means nothing anymore but everyone is striving for one because it's what's expected of you and in the hope of being better off. It's a bit mad and I think when it comes to schools a mix of both 'worlds' for everyone would be good. Oh and Mein Kampf is not illegal to own. It's been made illegal to print in a lot of European countries but that hasn't prevented it from receiving audiobook versions on itunes marked "not suitable for children under 9 years". It's not worth reading, though - it reads like a very prolonged tantrum from a 15 year old. In 2016 an annotated edition was released that can be sold and bought from every ordinary book shop in the country. On a final note: How much all these countries "love" Germany can be seen every year during the ESC

15:33 How to decide at 10? You don´t. You can´t as a 10 year old. You will mostly decide on base of your grades. If you very good you usalle go to the Gymnasium where you learn a third or forth language and will be trimmed towards University till grade 12. But If you complete grade 10 you will automaticly get a Middle Grade / Realschule Graduation. And many pupils also fall down a step even before. Basicly if your parents think you are the most smartest kid on earth they will pressure you into gymnasium just to break under the pressure 2 years later and end up as a good middle ground pupil. Realschule is realy just the middle way for most stuff and you have still all paths open after completing it. Hauptschule leaves most of the higher stuff out and focuses on Crafts and handiwork. But after comnpleting it after 8 years you can still add onto it and get a higher Graduation. The paths stay open but it would hurt nobody if the split would happen later when the pupils actually have the abbiltiy to decide what they want.

Germany was split into two states for 40 years (1949-1989), but the Berlin Wall existed for "only" 28 years (1961-1989). And when I think about the fact that I grew up in West-Berlin when the wall was still there, and that's now 35 years ago that it came down, I feel old... And no, in Germany aren't wild bears. You only find them in zoos, and on coat of arms...

The Christian carnival is closely linked to the 40-day period of fasting in preparation for Easter. This is already clear from the name, because the word "Fastnacht" means the "night before fasting" or the period before the start of Lent. Carnival lasts six days - from Thursday to Ash Wednesday. But the historical origins of carnival are complex. On the one hand, different names for one and the same festival have emerged over the years: Fasching, Fassenacht, Fasnet, Fastabend, Karneval, etc. In addition, regional differences in names, periods and customs have developed, although the basic principle has remained the same: regardless of position or status, all people are on the same level during this time, drinking, eating and celebrating together in the last days before Lent. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schw%C3%A4bisch-alemannische_Fastnacht#Urspr%C3%BCnge_in_Mittelalter_und_Fr%C3%BCher_Neuzeit Use goggle translate :o)

I thought you did The Fat Electrician's Berlin Air Lift video? If not, it'll help explain the political and geographical issues of the time. And yes, it was closer to 30 years for the Berlin Wall. Built in 1961. I remember when it came down in 1989. It was a world-wide party.

my english is not that good so i try to say it easy an short. Valhalla is not only nordic, its germanic Mythologie. The Hostrycs are sure we alle came from a Culture that named the Kelten. Central Europe is realy close in the past in form of cultures an speak. With old german dialects u can understand some thing in the nordic and u can read some old english too, cause english also cames from an old germanic speak. later it get alot of danish influnces and later also french influcens but the base came from the sachsen laer called the angelsachsen.

Your worried about the bear, but you should really fear the boar. They are Vicious if not fully murderous and all can run faster than you. Romani you might have an easier time thinking of as Gypsy that in the 70s got declared a derogatory term for the nomadic group. High German is used everywhere its just showing your not a local still using it.

A typical German stereotype: Germans like watching videos of other people teaching international audiences about Germany (and reaction videos to those educational videos ;-) ). Even Germans argue about the German language and dialects, especially culinary vocabulary, in my experience (Ich bin Ossi, bei mir heißt es Pfannkuchen, nicht Berliner!). We also criticize our own education system a lot, as well as differences between East and West Germany and sustainability (if you want to talk about politics in Germany: just don't). And then there are some German-speaking people on the Internet who argue about dubbing, since many native German speakers absolutely hate German dubbing, for some reason, while many international viewers are kind of impressed by it, for example the German rendition of the first One Piece opening. I love German dubbing and the German language, but I don't like what many people from my generation and younger ones are doing to it, but discussing that would go too far, so let me finish by just saying that this is another one of the many things Germans argue about when it comes to their own country, culture and people.

For the school part. The three school types are building up on eacht other. So if you want to get a higher edjucation, you can add the last years of the higher school type or change during your time in school. You can also change done if you started higher than you are capable to manage. So its not a fixed choice, but after the 4th grade when you can decide for the first time, your school will give you recomendations to whats fitting you best. For example I went throu "Realschule" the middle type and after I was done added 3 years at the "Gymnasium" highest type and now I have a qualification from both.

Neuschwanstein, we’ll no, it is not like Disney but the other way round: Disney copied Neuschwanstein. It’s so funny hearing Americans when they walk through our historic towns saying that they look like Disneyland… because, no, Disneyland is a copy of the real thing here. I‘ve been to Disney World in Florida. Practically everything is a copy of someplace in Europe.

I suggest it because Germany has some awesome music tbh. Also, my great grandfather and his family came to America from Germany, so I am one of those 30% I guess lol

Dude, HOW? How did you not learn about the Berlin Wall in school? I need someone from England to send me some UK textbooks because this is just nuts that almost all history is not taught in the UK. The Berlin Wall is a major point in US curriculum. Of course President Reagan did have a hand in getting it torn down but still that's a major historical event that anyone should know. As for German descent, I am. One of the families I descended from were Mueller's from Baden Baden, landed at Castle Garden in 1860, fought in the Civil War and ended up in Bath, NY eventually as the Miller family. it's the youngest American line I have, everyone else is 17th Century Dutch, Irish or English.

Uhmm ... Reagan had exactly zero hand in getting the wall torn down. We tore it down. And we didn't need some former actor to tell us what to do. Do US textbooks really link Reagan to the wall?
