That "honeycomb" sight is called an ACOG, it's widely used on the M4. The honeycomb cap (it's just a cap that can come off) is to stop your sight from reflecting the sun so to the enemy, exposing your location. As you look through the sight, the honeycomb is almost invisible to you as the user, it doesn't interfere with your sighting. Former Armorer/Scout for 2/9INF (US Army).

Army is federal service, National Guard is state service that can be activated for federal service. Basically the guard is the official state militia and will help out with things like disasters attacks etc and can be used to supplement the police, medical, or fire services. Because the guard isn't a federal service until activated they aren't subject to the posse comitatus act. They're often referred to as citizen soldiers. Interestingly the US Code changed the definition of militia in 1908 when the National Guard was officially founded to include the Organized and Unorganized militias - the latter referring to every male between the ages of 18 and 45.

Generally speaking, the Marines are used for beach landings and amphibious assaults. Launch from amphibious assault ships and roll up onto a beach. Marines can do quite a bit more than that, but that's just their basic mission. The Marines get their budget from the Navy. The Navy signs their paychecks. The Army is bigger in personnel and equipment, and are essentially land based. But their missions can intertwine. The Army uses the Air Force for Airborne operations and close air support. The Marines rely on the Navy mostly to get them to where they need to be. But every branch does work together. Marines also guard U.S. Embassies around the world.
@protorhinocerator142 Жыл бұрын
The word for this is "Littoral". That's the important chunk of land that borders the sea. New York, Tokyo, Shanghai are all critical littorals. There are others that don't have huge cities like strategic islands, the Suez Canal, etc. The Marines' job is to land there, often under hostile conditions, secure the area, set up docks for the Navy to dock at, and set up airfields for aircraft of the various services. Once the Marines secure/create a beachhead, then the Army, Navy, and Air Force has a place to get their toes in the door and conduct more heavy operations.
@delphy2478 Жыл бұрын
i would say the primary difference in missions for marines vs army is scale. army generally operates on a larger scale. if you want to capture a single city thats the marines, if you want to garrison an entire oblast and for a defensive line thats army. again there is a ton of overlap, but marines generally operate in smaller deployments or as parts of larger deployements in concert with other forces (mostly army)
@ironnoodle7992 Жыл бұрын
The Army does not use the Air Force for anything. The Air Force is not subservient to the Army. Having very different missions, the USAF separated from the USA so that it could act autonomously. The Air Force's mission is to take the fight to the enemies' homeland and render them both incapable of and unwilling to continuing the fight. Everything else the USAF does, such as gaining air supremacy and supporting ground troops, is to support that one single mission.
@Longhauler85 Жыл бұрын
@ironnoodle7992 Umm...how does the Army do airborne operations then? How do they get Helicopters and tanks transported in a rapid manner?? Who provides close air support to ground forces with A-10's and AC-130's?? Yes, the Air Force does have their own mission, but they do help the Army out all the time.

Due to the change in war (at least in the middle east) I understood that the Marines current "job" is the actual attack and securing of an area. Once the Marines go in and destroy most of the resistance, the army goes in and sets up base and regulates and controls while the Marines move onto another area that "needs to be attacked".

Ok. Here's the info from a vet... 1-The Army and Air Force both have a reserve component. Iur reserves are different from alot of European reserves. They still train 1 weekend every month and 2 weeks a year. Also, since 9/11, their units have heen activated and deployed just as much as regular Army and Air Force. Next the National Guard, its basically a state level Reserves (Army and Air Force). Again with the 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year training cycle. Since 9/11, theyve also been activated and deployed overseas, just not at the level of the other branches have. 2-The U.S. Air Force is the worlds largest air force. The U.S. Navy has the 2nd largest. 3- Marines are basically the land force of the Navy. Back in the 1700's, they were the infantry on board ships. If the U.S. goes to war, the Army generally flies from state side to wherever shits popping off. Marines get rides with the Navy. About 1/3 of the aircraft on a U.S. carrier are flown by Marines. 4- The B-52 is so old that there is a couple of documented cases where grandpa, dad, and son have all piloted the same airframe.

That Branch" stuff here please. ❤❤❤ Generally the Marine Corps is considered America's "Elite Fighting Force". That's why our Bootcamp is on a whole different level, and the standards we hold ourselves to, and all that sort of stuff. The Marine Corps is a "Department of the Navy" or something like that, which is why it is called "Amphibious" it is essentially the Navy's Ground forces that are trained for every situation... Land, Sea or Air, A Marine is ready to be there. The Army and The Navy are the "Core" of the Military, and do "Most Stuff" the Airforce is much more specialized, and the Marine Corps is a smaller force of "Specialists" in each area combined into an "Elite Fighting Force" The best way to describe it is sort of the Mid-Way point Between "Normal Military" and "Special Forces" if that makes sense? The Marine Corps sort of has a different Culture than the rest of the United States Military... It takes a "Special Sort of Person" to even want to consider being a Marine, so you have people from all over the country who were "The Best At" this or that in their Community... A bunch of Over-Achievers who thrive on being challenged, the kind of person who see's "The Top" as the beggining of their mountian, and keeps climbing into the heavens until they get to shake God's hand, type people... Met some of the most amazing people of my life out there, and I wouldn't trade those experiences... that life... for anything. Much Love and Big Hugs everyone!!

I'm sure someone has explained this but if not I'll give it a go. I'm a former Marine so I have a tiny understanding of differences. The Marines are a department of the Navy (something we're not particularly proud of) when we need to go somewhere and erase it, the Navy gives us a ride. The Navy also gives us medical treatment as the Marines have zero Doctors or anything medical in our ranks. The Marines are the tip of the spear. Regardless of your job in the Marine Corps, you are a rifleman first. For example, if you are a supply clerk from day to day, that's your job. However, if needed you are trained to operate in a combat squad and fireteam, so you can pick up a weapon and function without additional training. The Army is mainly a support and logistic branch with some combat abilities. In a perfect scenario, the Marines will take a position and the Army occupies and maintains that position. If your job in the Army is supply clerk, that's what you know. A supply clerk in the Army could not just integrate into a combat squad and function without combat training. At least that's my understanding. That's massively simplified, but it's the difference in a nutshell.

The army is a land force for foreign wars. They are parachuted in to foreign lands for the most part. The Marines is an amphibious landing force for foreign wars. They are shipped into combat zones over the oceans aboard amphibious carrier ships (not to be confused with aircraft carriers) and arrive by beach. The National Guard is for homeland emergencies such as natural disasters and rioting. The Coast Guard is for guarding our shores and are often involved in drug interdiction as well as protecting our Coast Lines from foreign attack.

Coast Guard also looks after watercraft in general, performing rescues at sea. I'd argue they have the most dangerous job of the whole bunch, particularly because they're doing the dangerous part of the job more often than the other branches of the military. The ocean is no joke.

National Guard, and Air National Guard are controlled by each state. The Governor of each state is technically their Commander in Chief. They can be conscripted Federally in times of crisis, but this is not really necessary with our standing Army, Marines, Air Forces, and Navy. The National Guard is there to defend the U.S. in case of an invasion, but as that is highly unlikely they tend to be called up to help out in crisis situations like after a Hurricane, Tornado, mass Flooding, etc... to act as extra security, and for Humanitarian Aid. For instance after Hurricane Katrina they National Guard of Louisiana was called up to provide security for the disaster areas to keep looters out of the area, and to also assist with Search and Rescue operations. They also helped distribute Food, and Water as well as Security for the distribution efforts. They sometimes are referred to as Weekend Warriors as they only have to show up one weekend a month for training, etc..., and a few weeks a year (for more in-depth training).....unless they are called up due to a disaster, etc... then they are Duty Bound to drop what they are doing, and show up for Service. Also, by Law Employers are not allowed to penalize them for missing work when they are called up, and they Must allow the soldiers time off for their training.

In fact, the Marines are sometimes referred to as the “tip of the spear,” because these combat-ready units typically spearhead conflict operations. To give you an idea of the Marines, here are a few quotes from a retired four star General "Mad Dog" James Mattis: "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet." "I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I’ll kill you all." "We’ve backed off in good faith to try and give you a chance to straighten this problem out. But I am going to beg with you for a minute. I'm going to plead with you, do not cross us (Marines). Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years." "Find the enemy that wants to end this ( American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact." " Demonstrate to the world there is “No Better Friend - No Worse Enemy” than a US Marine."

I don't want this because a human can make an assessment on the ground about what is happening and not target non-combatants. If human lives are at stake, it makes the concept of going to war a lot harder due to the potential for loss of life as opposed to if synthetic Soldiers are deployed, it just becomes a price tag without the political fallout for families burying their service member.

They secured the landing zone, THEN the US Army arrived to march forward from there and fight the battles on land. Marines are the link between corp from the Navy to the Army and to the Air Force. Their duties over lap slightly with that of the Navy, and they over lap slightly with the Army and over lap with the Air Force.......that way there is no gap in the fighting machine.

While normally we'd use Marines for an amphibious invasion, during 1944 the entire Marine Corps was committed to operations in the Pacific, leaving the Normandy landings entirely to the Army. The first American units ashore on D-Day were the 1st, 4th, 29th, and 90th Infantry Divisions (along with pre-dawn air drops from the 82nd and 101st).

You are absolutely correct…the Marines go in first, they are the “tip of the spear”, so to speak…not counting the various “special service branches” (Navy SEALS, Army Rangers etc). It may not even be necessary to bring in the main branches…just ask Mr. BinLaden😕 I know it seems like a lot, but I tell you who else obsesses over America’s strength…China and Russia!

The Marines are an expeditionary force. So if the Navy specializes in transport and naval control, the airforce specializes in recon and air support, the army specializes in large scale operations and occupation the Marines specialize in rapid deployment and power projection. The airforce finds the target, the navy delivers the marines, the marines take the target and the army controls it. Vastly oversimplified and not a strict rule but thats the idea.

Marine Corps will serve active duty in a combat field as well but the primary difference between them and the Army is that they specialize in assaults that come from water. Most of their assaults come from sea-based platforms that infiltrate the land. They work very closely with the United States Navy but they also have a lot of specialized units that are designated for Tactical purposes. They're basically like a Swiss army knife of the United States military

U.S. Coast Guard is, also, one of America's military branches. It's under Dept./Homeland Security. The President can move it under the Navy during war. People tend to overlook them.

Each military branch has its own priorities. Army first priority is ground, Navy first priority is sea, air force is air...Marines are the unit that is more versatile for all circumstances. The focus will be as they said predominantly expeditionary where the Army would dominate personnel on long term scenario.

You are correct when speaking to the tanks and such. Equipment and tech matters. Russia has more tanks, but they are not as effective as the US tanks. Many of their old tanks were what Iraq was using during the Gulf war where the M1 Abrams was able to target and engage them before the Russian made tanks were even in range to return effective fire.

Marines are part of the Navy, they are Maritime land forces primarily, but they also have air craft. They are based off navy posts (naval bases and ships) Army is the army. National Guard has a dual mission, they are State Militia, and Army Reservists basically. They can be called to respond to disasasters such ah as hurricane, wildfire, earthquake, etc. Provide humanitarian relifef, etc by the State governor. And can be deployed to war by the president.

The main difference between like U.S. Army and National Guard is that the active U.S. Army is a full time job. National Guard is like a part time job for lack of a better phrase. National Guard can still hold down regular jobs while Army is the job. There's also-I believe but may not be entirely correct-laws that prohibit U.S. Army troops from being used militarily on our home soil. So the Nationa Guard serves as a force that can be used that way. If I'm wrong, hopefully someone will correct me here

The marines are for military personnel that live breath and eat military training. They are the primary ground troops. That use as little mobile assistance as possible. The big boys are the army rangers, navy S.E.A.LS, and airforce paratroopers Those three are what you would send out on special missions
@RealzFoSho Жыл бұрын
Regulars are active service, full fledged troops. National Guard are State based and often serve part time. They can be activated for Federal Service, but they are usually more locally focused and are more likely to participate in local support efforts, such as natural disaster relief, than in overseas combat. They are adequately trained (by active service standards) and can competently fulfill combat roles when called upon. It is not entirely uncommon for Air Wings of National Guards to be called overseas, due to their ease of movement and value, and they have proven to be very effective at "getting the job done". Reserves are part time, at the Federal level. They are specifically trained to be called upon in times of emergency. They train monthly and can fulfill every major military role. The US Government spends a lot of money to make sure that there are very well trained "benchwarmers" in the event that things escalate.

No more Marine tanks. And the navy part didn't mention the "mini carriers" which are used to transport Marines and carry helicopters and vertical takeoff jets. These are pretty much the equivalent of most other countries' carriers and probably come close to outnumbering them.

The largest and oldest service in the U.S. military, the Army provides the ground forces that protect the United States. A component of the Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps maintains amphibious and ground units for contingency and combat operations. The army doesn’t really have anything to do with the water.

I'm not going to get into personal specifics ... but - - - Trust me when I say between me and my rural neighbors ... Say your prayers. We know every inch of our properties, we're prepared for trouble and protective of our Country and Constitution. Japan’s Admiral Isoroku Yamamot (WWII), "You cannot invade mainland United States.
