We also call a forest "the woods," in the US. I think that (from my childhood, and places I've lived), we would commonly call it "the woods," if it was a small wooded area, and "the forest," for large wooded areas. In the US, we use "Grocery store," or "supermarket," interchangeably, at least where I've lived. A lot of the time, we just call it "the store." The US has lots of regional differences.

@@cameronnewman9362 Yeah. Only 17 states have ABC stores. She's familiar with that term because she is from a state where all liquor is sold in ABC stores. Beer and wine can be sold elsewhere, though, in NC. It's just that in some states the only liquor stores are ABC stores.

44 years here in America, and this is the first time hearing an ABC Store. My grandfather owned a tavern till the early 80s and it was always the liquor store.

In the USA each state has its own rules for liquor sales. ABC I have seen in I believe the state of Ohio. In Alaska, liquor is sold in Liquor Stores. In Michigan you can buy beer, wine and liquor in a grocery store, as well as a liquor store or a party store. It vaties state to state

There were a few states that were really strict with how they sold alcohol. A few you couldn't buy beer and liquor in the same store, and hard alcohol could only be sold in a state store. The Blue Laws that are still in place in some areas still won't allow alcohol sales.

Vanessa was being very specific and descriptive in calling that truck a "tractor trailer." It IS a truck, but a tractor trailer is a very BIG truck with 18 wheels. We also call them "18-wheelers," or "semis," or just "trucks" or "big trucks." We will often use the other names to distinguish them from delivery trucks/vans, or pickup trucks. In the US, we use mostly "interstate" (if it spans more than one state), and "highway," but we also use "freeway," especially for a section of highway or interstate that goes through a city.

Yup. "Truck" is a generic term. A "tractor trailer" refers to articulated trucks (trucks with a bendy part) that have both a cab (the tractor) and a trailer. These are also known as "semi-detached" which we shorten to "semi"

IH am 64years old and as a child, I remember calling flip-flops “thongs”. I think I was into or nearly into my 20s when we started calling them flip-flops. I didn’t know what a thong was until I was in my 40s, I believe.

Comforters are 'almost' the same as Duvets. In that they are filled with a fluffy substance and quilted, usually in a pattern of large squares. The word duvet however is usually reserved for one that is filled with down feathers. Recently, this is changing for ones filled with 'down-alternatives', which would be referred to as a 'down-alternative duvet'. Duvets are also almost always plain white - hence the need for a duvet cover that can be removed and easily thrown in the wash. Comforters do not use 'covers' and the whole piece goes through the wash. So comforters are often of a colored or even print fabric. And the quilting can be in almost any pattern. Often prints are outline quilted to follow the pattern on the fabric - especially for florals. Comforters traditionally are filled with cotton or polyester fill. Quilts in the US usually refer to patchwork quilts, despite the reality that one can quilt something that is a single piece of fabric instead of patchwork. However, quilts are almost always filled with cotton batting, which is flatter than what goes in a comforter or duvet. Those are fluffier. Blankets do not have any filling. And they are just one layer, usually of a warm fabric like wool, but sometimes a woven heavy cotton or nowadays, often fleece - just like a fleece jacket's fabric.

We have comforters and duvets in the US, and they’re completely different items. A duvet is a blanket that goes inside of a duvet cover. We use duvets in our home because the covers are easily washed and interchanged to suit the decor. A comforter on the other hand, is just a thick blanket that does not have a removable exterior.

Hello, I live in Eugene, Oregon in the USA. The store you get alcohol in is called the liquor store. We have many words for bed covers. A comforter usually is usually two pieces of fabric with a layer of fill sewn in-between them. A quilt is sort of like a comforter where one side is usually pieces of fabric cut and sewn together in pretty designs. We do have duvets here. They are like a comforter but are usually filled with down/feathers and then are covered with a duvet cover that can be taken off and washed. Then there are bed spreads that are used in the summer in place of a comforter. A pretty light weight bed cover. We used to call flip flops thongs when I was a child. It changed to flip flops when thong under wear became a thing.

I've been in GA for the past 22 years and have been using the word "duvet" ever since. I also haven't heard "bed spread" in quite a while. And a "comforter" is not the same as a duvet. It's one piece, whereas a duvet has a zipper to insert another piece. I don't know what that piece is called, but it's a sort of comfy cushion or blanket. From the outside, a duvet & a comforter look the same, minus the zipper on a duvet.

French fries is from WW1. US soldiers in Belgium saw them for the first time there. French was the predominately spoken language in the south of Belgium so the US soldiers called them "French Fries"

wrong. thomas jefferson was envoy to france. when he returned he brought back many recipes including one for "potatoes made in the french manner" right here > "Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, is credited with introducing French fries to America. I grew up in California and those flip floppy sandals, we called "thongs". We also called them "chanclas" because we lived in a Mexican neighborhood, but around non-Mexicans we called them "thongs". Forest and woods are both used in America. Woods are generally used for local and forest more for large expanses. My kids still talk about the time the got lost in the woods. We also say wood line not forest line, for the edge of the trees. Cabin in the woods is a movie here.

From Kansas, I was aware some states have ABC stores, but we have liquor stores, although as a kid in the late 70s early 80s, carding for underage drinking was more stringent when the ABC (Alcohol Bureau of Control) was in town cracking down. We call it a freeway because we are not charged to drive on it. My sister lives on the east coast and I have heard her call it a tollway because they have to pay a toll fee at a tollbooth to get on the road. We use the word “woods.” We also use the word “duvet” for a comforter that is covered by a large cover that can be removed for laundering. My husband was in the trucking industry and we do call semis “trucks.” We also call them tractor-trailers because the cab pulls like a tractor and it pulls a trailer. I hear people call them trucks because that is what they are but most often I hear the word “semi.”

The US interstate system even has regional differences. Here in the south, you refer to the interstate by its number, so 65 or 20. On the east coast and some Midwest, they’ll put the “I” in front, so “I-95” or “I-80.” In Southern California, they put “The” in front, so it’s “The 110” or “The 405.” I have some friends from SoCal that live here in Birmingham now and I always get a chuckle when they talk about “The 20” or “The 65.” To me, state highways were always highways. The interstate highways were the interstate or freeways. So if we were giving directions we would say “Take the interstate from Chicago to Indianapolis.” If we were traveling and going from the highway to the interstate, you were getting on the freeway. Yeah…when I put it that way, no wonder it’s confusing.

LOL on "lollies"--back when I was a cheerleader in high school, that's what we called the garment you wear under your cheerleading skirt so you don't show your underwear when you do flips & jumps! 🤣 The American lady is not correct about duvet--we do have them but they are different from comforters in that the duvet is a plain white comforter-like blanket that requires a duvet cover for any kind of color or pattern. The duvet cover is removable. The comforter is all one piece with the design part permanently attached to the quilted fluffy part. We also call them liquor stores, not ABC stores, at least in my part of the country!

Very true. Just a generic “peppers” is kind of like “Coke” in certain parts of the south. Most of the time, you’re going to get a “What kind?” The picture that she showed were red, yellow and green “bell peppers”, which, funny enough, don’t contain capsaicin, so capsicum is kind of weird other than that’s just the term for the entire genus that includes dozens of pepper species. We would also just say “green pepper” or “red pepper”

In Upstate NY, a bathroom could have several names: restroom, toilet, little girls’/boys’ room, the potty, the jon, the facilities, the shitter, and water closet (though that was rare). We used those terms for both public and private bathrooms. However, if the bathroom is outside and a single holer, it’s an outhouse. If it has several holes, it’s a latrine. If it’s rented for a construction site, fair, or festival, then it’s probably called a port-a-potty or port-a-jon.

In the older Americans defense, we grew up calling flip flops , thongs. Thong type underwear didn’t become popular until the late 80’s or early 90’s. And I still detest that they used my favorite sandal word for those underwear’s. Young kids misappropiated a word we used forever before that and then started making fun of older people who said thongs.

The term flip-flops came over to the West Coast from Hawaii, actually. I grew up with thongs in Portland, OR. Wasn't until around the 70s that people on the mainland started switching to calling them flip-flops like Hawaiians did. They got thicker, and much more wildly colored. More fun. There was a pause of some years before thong underwear and bikinis really hit.

Like another commenter mentioned, the terms "forest" and "the woods" are definitely both used here in the US with "forest" being reserved for a larger wooded area. The term "woods" might imply a smaller wooded area, but could be used for any size wooded area, not just smaller ones. Also, I suspect use of the term "woods" might be more a rural or even southern term that might not be too familiar to city folks. We also use both "grocery store" and "supermarket", though I imagine the term "supermarket" more for a larger store that sells both groceries and other types of goods like clothing, toys and electronics. The term "grocery store" implies that the store only sells food and beverage products, though I could still see both terms used interchangeably for both stores that sell only groceries and stores that sell both groceries and other types of products. We also use both "flip flops" and "thongs" in the US. The word "thongs" also has the same double meaning as a G-string in the US. The alternate meaning derives directly from the piece of material on the footwear that wedges between your toes. I've lived my entire live in the US and I've never heard the term "ABC store" before. A store that sells only alcohol is a "liquor store". Some states have drive-through liquor stores called "beer barns". Also, stores that sell only tobacco products are called "smoke shops". "Pants" is a generic term for outer lower body clothing, but we also have numerous other terms for specific types of pants such as "blue jeans" or just "jeans" for pants made of denim, which can also combine the terms for specific styles of blue jeans such as "skinny jeans", or "boot-cut jeans". I think we would use "trousers" as one of several words for a classier type of pants, or maybe my mind just picked it up from all of the British programming I've watched throughout my life. We might sometimes use the term "underpants" interchangeably for underwear, but I would think of that term being used more for talking to a small child about that article of clothing. When I come home from work or wherever, I change out of my blue jeans into more comfortable sweatpants. I jokingly refer to this as "taking my pants off", which I'm sure would sound even funnier to British people.

ABC stores exist only in some states where the laws require more government control. Although I'm an American, I've only read about them. They're called "liquor stores" wherever I've lived (Arizona, MIssouri, Kansas, California, Texas). After the end of prohibition (era during the 20s when all alcoholic beverages were illegal except for medicinal or communion/eucharist purposes, a very few states (mostly east of the MIssissippi River), kept control over liquor sales, similar to the way they now do over marijuana dispensaries). I've never used or heard the term "rain boots" in the parts of Americas I've lived in (midwest, southwest, west and TX)I In the snow, I wear snow boots. In the rain, I wear galoshes. When "Flip flops" first became popular (in the early 60s, I think), we called them thongs. They later became flip flops. I've also heard the name "puh-nots" but not for years. In America we have duvets too. Ours are just usually flat and seen more as a decorative cover on the bed as opposed to providing warmth and comfort. We also call them blankets. I've always called them blankets. We call grocery stores supermarkets as well. It's usually dependant on the size of the store. If they are a big chain store than they're usually called supermarkets but for smaller stores, we would normally call them grocery stores or markets. For the peppers, we have to specify it as "bell pepper" because, for many of places in America, we have some Latino culture. I myself am a Latina and peppers to us are like jalapenos, habaneros, etc. Pepper indicates spicy to us or the seasoning. We have many names for different kinds of peppers so we tend to be more specific. The ABC store has me scratching my head because I know that as a liquor store or even a beverage warehouse if it's a bigger store but I don't know wtf an ABC store is. Sounds like a kids store where they can get books and stuff to learn their ABCs. I live in Southern California where most of us live, especially during rush hour, on what I've always known them as which is freeways. I have never called them anything but freeways but I'm sure it's different state to state. There are a couple reasons why we call them freeways here. One is that it's free from pedestrians and obstructions to allow faster travel. Also, other in toll areas or FasTrak lanes, we don't pay tolls to drive them so it's considered free. It's not free though, we pay a crap load of taxes for them.

In Arizona, I consider it a duvet if it is a cotton -type blanket enclosed with a removable zippered or buttoned sack, made out of bed sheet like material. It advantage being that the outer part is easier to launder or keep clean. The inner part doesn't need to be laundered nearly so often that way. Also, in American, unless you have a duvet, you normally have top sheet between you and the blanket and the duvet eliminates the need for that. A comforter, on the other hand, can look like a duvet but it is stitched or knotted together, sacke and blanket. You can't remove the blanket and was just the outside part. And a quilt can home made or machine made, but it also consists of 3 connected parts. Inside, you will find cotton (usually, sometimes wool batting or a soft artificial whole piece filling. The back can be bedsheet - type fabric or. any fabric large enough for the bed. The front is made up of various smaller pieces of fabric sewn together either in a beautiful design or, on the cheap, it can be just different square of rectangular scraps sown together. These are combined in the three layers The sides are then arranged in closed seams. ANd finally, using a machine or (better yet) a quilting frame), a lovely designed pattern is mad all over the fabric, which affixes the three fabrics together, causing it not to bunch up or causing the inner part of get unaligned with the rest. Of course, we also have fuzzy blankets, other kinds of plain blankets and bed spreas.

Never heard of that phrase and have only heard it referred as a liquor store but that might be regional also. If someone referred to such a store as an ABC store, I would know what they’re talking about, but I’ve never heard it, referred as such. Trousers and pants were both used in my youth. LolliPOP. When you want a candy that is usually hard, most of the time round, and you lick it, suck on it, then often bite it off the stick to finish it, we call it a lolliPOP. There are forests and there are woods. When you're in a huge area that is completely covered in trees but with mostly open, grassy ground, it's a forest. When you're in an area that is completely covered in trees AND lots of entangled undergrowth, that's just woods. Woods are generally smaller than forests, also. We have quilts, too but, generally they're a patchwork blanket that's sewn on top of another, thinner blanket (sometimes even a sheet) with some light stuffing inside, like polyfill. What she called "rain boots" are also sometimes called "galoshes". That's pronounced just like it's spelled with a short "a" and a short "o". I know, right? And she thought "comforter" was weird! lol Okay, I have NEVER heard of an "ABC Store". She even said she just found out that's what it was called when she "looked it up." Sorry, never said that, never heard it called that, never even saw that name/phrase written ANYWHERE. She's nuts we have duvets in the US. It's basically a comforter that has a removable cover that you can wash. It's usually made with goosedown but because of allergies we have them made of higher grade fiber as well. I think most people know enough about each others cultures to know the alternative words.

A Tractor Trailer is a truck where you can trade out the trailer, Some also call it a Semi Truck because when the trailer is disconnected its an incomplete truck. You might know of the Lollypop there are many kinds of pops, ring pops, push pops, freezer pops aka popsickles. as long as the trees are thick enough you can't see the far side its forest. Woods also get used. There are many kinds of apartments even lofts and condos that aren't even limited to just one floor inside the apartment.

Commercial use vehicles, . . . we get a bit specific. Okay, we can get VERY specific. Agreed, " Lollies" means lollipops. Togs is a very old term for athletic apparel. America has HUGE areas of trees, so we use "forrest". We might call the stand of trees behind your house "the woods", but this is like trucks, we tend to use way more specific terms. We used to use the term " Supermarket", but with the rise of the "Super Stores", it has fallen out of use. In America "comforter" refers to a printed duvet that does NOT need to be in a cover. For us a "duvet" is white, often down filled and needs a cover. Peppers, . . . again American specificity. Thanks to Mexican influence, we have too many peppers and it can get quite dangerous if you label them all "Peppers". Boots, . . . Rain Boots is the broad term here in America. We do use Gumboots, but that is a specific style of rain boot, as are Wellingtons. Thongs was about as common as Flip-Flops, until the Thong got popular. By the way, the Thong got it's name from the Flip-Flop.

The Truck is A Semi if it is not pulling a Trailer, it could also be called a Bob Tail, if driving on the road with no trailer, if the semi is pulling a trailer, it is called A Rig, or A Tractor Trailer, anything under 5 ton weight, is A truck, anything above that weight is A Semi. Duvet isn't weird, it's just a different thing. A duvet goes over your comforters to protect them and give them some style. Comforters can get pretty expensive, so instead of buying a ton of them for different styles and fabrics, you just buy a duvet cover and change them as your wish. A duvet isn't itself the same as a comforter, your comforter goes inside the duvet covers. It's like a pillow case for your heavy blankets/comforters. Quilts are exactly like comforters except they are specifically made out of patchwork.

@6:33 - If you say, "I saw a "Tractor-Trailer at the off ramp that was red," that is almost always assumed to be 2 units; a drive unit with a driver (Tractor), with a cargo unit (Trailer) that the tractor unit is pulling around. The "Semi" and "Semi Truck" terms are often used to describe that same scenario, but could be ONLY the drive unit, with no cargo attached, but can ALSO be the drive unit AND cargo unit attached. There is another derivation: "Semi Tractor," in which case you can be sure you are ONLY speaking about the power unit, with no cargo unit attached. Attach that to a cargo unit, you have a proper "Tractor Trailer." Hope that helps...

I'm from the US. For the truck/lorry/tractor-trailer - I would call this a truck. Specifically, the front portion of the vehicle with the engine is the truck. When hooked to a trailer, I might call the whole thing a truck, or an "18-wheeler". I have heard "tractor-trailer" used also for the combined vehicle (the part with the engine being the "tractor" pulling the "trailer") but I would say that term is not used nearly as often as "truck". Semi is also frequently used for the whole vehicle - less so when just the truck is driving without a trailer. I have heard of flip-flops being called thongs when I was a child. I think as time has gone on, people have switched to flip-flops, knowing that a singular "thong" is a type of underwear.

UK uses cookie and biscuit. In the US a carbonated drink will have a different name depending on the region. Pop, Soda, Coke. Yes, in some areas of the US even a 7-up or sprite will be called Coke. Pacific NW - we have forests. They're too big to be woods. Woods are smallish areas of trees considered safe for kids to play in, usually. Winnie the Pooh lives in the woods. 😄 Freeways vs. highways - Out West, as well as no tolls on freeways, those are divided roads, two or more lanes on each side, limited access and egress, high speed, and no stops. You need to take exits and entrance roads except waaay out in the boonies. Highways have cross streets and maybe stoplights, you always have to stop before before turning on one, and while they're built for long-distance travel across country, people also live along them like other streets in cities. (Being a Westerner, never going past the Rockies until in my 50s, the first time I went back East I was surprised as hell that toll roads still existed. It was so quaint! I thought those went out in the 1800s.) Oregon - you can get beer and wine in grocery stores, gas station/convenience stores. Otherwise, it's illegal to buy hard liquor anywhere but a state-licensed liquor store, or at bars, taverns, lounges, etc. ABC must be a store chain name, because say that out West, you'll only get blank looks. The word flip-flops made it to the West Coast from Hawaii in the 70s. Yes, before that we wore thongs on our feet. 😄 The underwear and bikini bottom came considerably later. We've had quilts since Colonial times. I never heard of a duvet until in a 1960s book by an English author. Duvet is used an effort to be posh, I think. Most of us use comforters, and those are only during really cold times. Plus most of us make our beds with sheets top and bottom, then blankets, or blankets topped with a heavy quilt or comforter. Bottom sheets are mostly fitted now, because the suckers stay put. Upper sheets, blankets and all are just tucked under the mattress at the bottom of the bed. A comforter or quilt is usually simply laid neatly on top. (How on earth can you sleep comfortably with sheets loose and shifting around? Wrinkles, ugh.)

Trucks are all trucks from a pickup to a semi. Tractor Trailers are two pieces, the Semi Tractor which is the vehicle, the Semi Trailer attaches via a pin and 5th wheel apparatus. All semis are trucks, not all trucks are semis. Woods is used in the US for a small collection of trees, forest is bigger. Like my half acre of woods isn't a forest on its own, if you count all the properties together then it could be called a forest. We use Duvet in the US as well, it's just a fancier word. In the US, "truck" is a catch-all for large vehicles used for carrying cargo. Four or six wheels with an open bed, possibly covered with a canopy? That's a pickup truck. Closed cargo area that doesn't detach from the vehicle? Box truck. A truck that has one or more detachable trailers? That's a semi or a tractor trailer. I am a CDL driver in the US and while we do call them tracker trailer to differentiate between the tracker and the trailer. The tracker being the part of the truck that you drive and the trailer being the part that you haul goods, but when you're talking about the truck as a whole and your don't need to differentiate between the two, you just say semi or truck or semi truck. You'll say box truck if it's one whole piece that doesn't separate and it's much shorter. If it's what regular people drive normally, then it's just called a truck. Literally, nobody outside the trucking industry calls a semi truck a tracker trailer. The tracker is also referred to as a cab or a bobtail.

The thing that goes on your bed is a comforter, a duvet is what goes on top to protect it, a quilt is a lighter hand/ machine stitched items with geometric patterns and different colors, and a blanket is an over all term for all of the above (generally). I've heard of it called an ABC store but around here it's the liquor store. Road is something you drive on (general term). But usually refers to a two lane road. One in each direction. Highway is a set of two, two lane roads side by side. One set in one direction the other set in another direction. Interstate is anything that crosses between two or more states. Freeway is a four lane highway. Tractor trailer is a specific type of truck. In general a truck is something with a 'bed' or a place to put things in the back with a cab. A tractor trailer is a truck but a truck may not be a tractor trailer. Tractor trailers are also called semi, big rig or 18 wheeler.
