Marshawn "I'm just here so I don't get fined" Lynch and Richard Sherman were the backbone of the Hawks. Wilson was a big part, but he was almost like the youger brother who picked up the slack (not a slam against Wilson, it is what it is).

Richard Sherman was consistently being underrated and misjudged. He lasted until the fifth round because he was perceived as too "slow" -- he "only" ran a 4.5 forty -- to succeed as a starting corner-back in the NFL. Many people, especially in the media didn't know to what make of a young black man (straight) out of Compton with dreadlocks who graduated from Stanford. He messed with their preconceptions.

I live in Seattle and during that Season our State went crazy! It was so amazing. We painted a 747 to fly over the State. It was so exciting. The fans were named the 12th Man because when the other team would huddle we would make so much noise that it raised earthquake level. It truly was just magic. They just came together and were confident. I would agree the best NFL Team we will ever had and may never have again. So memorable!!!!

Chancellor & Sherman for me, as u can see by the highlights. Definitely one of the best defenses ever. That super bowl win we we're supposed to lose to Peyton Manning and yet we killed em. And that 2nd one we technically won on defense too but we decided to be stupid on offense on the last play of the game.

Sherm and Beast Mode were the heart and soul of this team, but there were stars at nearly every position. Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate were incredibly dynamic offensive threats, and on defense there really wasn't a DE or LB that was a weak link. Such an impressive defense, top 5 historically for sure. The offensive capabilities of the teams they competed against were unlike anything other top defenses ever had to go against. And then to utterly demolish Manning and his record breaking offense of the biggest stage? Legends!

Watched all the Hawks games during this era, and what struck me most was: 1. The defense communicated more than any I've ever seen, more pre-snap talk among linemen/linebackers/backfield and they then made more adjustments than any defense I've seen. 2. The defense swarmed to the ball and worked together to get interceptions and fumbles more than any I've seen. Watch the video when a ball pops up - Seahawks work together to keep the ball live, or when the ball's on the ground and 6/7/8 Hawks swarm to it.

The Legion Of Boom specifically referred to secondary of the Seahawks at the time. Cornerback Richard Sherman, who faced off against wide receivers, Kam Chancellor Strong Safety and Free Safety Earl Thomas. The CB on the other side was also usually good, but it was a bit of a revolving door. There have been better defenders, but as a collective group they measure up with the very best secondaries of all time. Easy Top 5. Yes I am biased though. Often forgotten were our linebackers, in particular Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright and Defensive End Michael Bennett. I'm not sure the order but this era of the Seahawks D ranks up there with the 1980's Chicago Bears, 2000's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and and Baltimore Ravens for all time greats

Aloha! I was living & teaching in the tiny bush village of Golovin, Alaska (population approx 160 ppl), when the Seahawks won the Superbowl. I was the ONLY "12th Man" at our small teacher's viewing party. Man Oh Man was the celebration fun & funny (the principal was for the opposing team > let's just say she didn't speak to me for a while LOL). There was a diehard "12th Man" in the village, a local - born and raised in Golovin - and I was happy to share some Superbowl souvenirs with him when they arrived in the mail from my family in WA state. A few years later, he, his young son, and another local young man flew all the way (3 different plane flights) to come to their VERY FIRST LIVE FOOTBALL GAME to see the SEAHAWKS in person at the Century Link Stadium, and I was honored to be their host and driver and join them for game day in Seattle. Good Times :D PS. The cheering noise from the fans was unbelievable and awesome!!

Your not wrong about having such a strong defense elevating everyone’s game & confidence. Completely different sport but I played soccer for over a decade in highschool we had a goalkeeper who was trained since he was young af by an ex pro soccer goalie & he was a beast as a result. Guy was playing on the best teams in our state, going to tournaments in Germany & other countries etc. went on to play D1 soccer in college. Me & my boys played defense & having him behind us in goal we felt invincible. It took a fucking helluva goal to score on him, anything less & he’s saving it. One game he saved 3 penalty kicks which is un heard of in my opinion. Not in a penalty shootout either we gave up 3 penalty’s in normal time & he saved all 3 vs good shots & players. Was also a little stressful bc we knew if we fucked up he was gonna call us out for it but that’s just being a good teammate, being around him made us play better. Kid was a beast, unfortunately got injured 2 years into college & stop playing, players, coaches & even opposing teams offensive often loved him because it was so entertaining watching him dive around to make saves, his patent move was when it looked like the shot was going to go in, he would just stand there & scream “over” & we would all watch as the ball barely goes over the goal or went wide. He had incredible special awareness, that & coming up to half field basically during corner kicks, Neuer sweeper keeper style

I'm born and raised in Washington and been a Seahawks fan for life. But if I were to answer your 2 questions without bias I would say the Legion of Boom were a top 5 defense all-time easily and maybe top 3 along with the '85 Bears and either the Steel Curtain or the Purple People Eaters. Our D-Line, LBs AND Corners were all top notch. Now, if I had to name just 2 players (offense or defense) that made that era great for Seattle I would have to say Richard Sherman on defense and Marshawn Lynch on offense. Both were no nonsense, hard-nosed players who did their jobs at the highest levels and had the utmost confidence in themselves and could bring out the best in everyone around them. There were other great players for sure, like Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Doug Baldwin, Russell Wilson, etc. but those 2 really defined the personality of that era Seahawks team.

That 2013 defense was top 3 of all time. Remember, they humiliated the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl when the Broncos had the all-time greatest offense in NFL history. They were absolutely committed, physically intimidating and deep. Half of that defense got huge contracts from other teams and the Defensive Coordinator got a head coaching job the next year. Everyone wanted a piece of the magic.

It's hard to single any one of them out because the strengths of one contributed to the play of the others. I loved Richard Sherman, thought he was a top three cb but he benefited from having the enforcer in Cam Chancellor and Earl Thomas playing center field covering so much ground and all of them being so cerebral. Sherman, while not the quickest, was so smart and had great technique and athleticism. Cam was a combination of smarts, athleticism and sheer power. Thomas was smart, fast, athletic and just freaking everywhere! He literally cleaned up for everyone. He allowed the others to take chances and if they missed he didn't. That in turn made the others better because they could play looser and take more chances knowing he was there to clean up. Cam put the fear of God in receivers! He was so large and yet deceptively quick and athletic. If you came across the middle, beware!! So they all helped and fed off each other so well! But we also can't forget about Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright at linebacker. Bobby was the quarterback of the defense and did it better than anybody in the league! Then there was the pash rush from Michael Bennett and Chris Clemmons that obviously contributed to the success of the defense by constantly harassing the opposing qb's. And we can't forget one Marshawn Lynch, Beast Mode!! Russell Wilson, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate...the list goes on and on. Just a very special team!!

When it comes to the Seahawks, the two players I believe played the biggest role in their success were Kam Chancellor and running back Marshawn Lynch. While the Hawks haven't had a Sherman-esque CB or a Thomas-esque Free Safety, they've gotten close with Griffin and Diggs. But Kam and Marshawn were tone setters on their sides of the team. Lynch would have a 5 yard run but would just abuse the DL and linebackers to fight for those 5 yards and the Seahawks defense would see that and feed off of it. Kam would destroy WRs and TEs (ESPECIALLY TEs) going over the middle and the Seahawks offense would feed of that too. Both players having injury issues at the later stages of their career was devastating too as the Hawks have never found players anything like them which is a shame because the plays Marshawn and Kam made were some of the major reasons for how low the Seahawks crowd got at Hawks games.

During football season (like now) every body wear their team jersey's on the Friday before a game and hangs their Seahawk flags outside of their homes, businesses, even cars. My doctor is wearing his jersey, or pastor is wearing his jersey, my boss, coworkers, news anchors, EVERYBODY supports this team. Similar to how they support their soccer team "the Sounders." Yeah, Seattle is a great soccer town. ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽ The Legion years were great. Most attributable to Cam and Russ, Earl Thomas. Top 10 all time defense. Not top 5!! They needed a very dominate, unstoppable, hall of fame pass rusher to be top 5. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈

I’d say there is a good argument for them being the best ever. The era they played in was far more offense friendly in terms of rules than the era of the old legendary defenses and the offenses they dominated included the best to to ever do it. If they played in the 80s when defenses could essentially murder offenses and get away with it, I think they would have been even better. It’s important to note though as good as those 3 were in the secondary it wasn’t just them. Their whole defense was full of star players one who doesn’t get enough recognition is Bobby Wagner he is an absolute beast of a player and one of the best linebackers there is. Throw in KJ Wright and a very stout pass rush and they were deadly.

You should consider the fact that the '85 Bears wouldn't have survived in today's NFL. The rules then compared to now is night and day. Back then a defense could destroy the opponent with impunity (slightly exaggerating). Modern NFL is more finesse, back in '85 was a junkyard and nothing pretty

Top 5 easily and probably top 3 but at that point any of the top 3 could be 1 all time. The three headed monster Kam, Sherman, and ET. Absolutely brilliant to watch and took over in big games.

07:25 The Denver Broncos we're the most prolific offense in NFL history. But they were dominated by a team that the vast majority of sports analysts said they had no chance in beating the Denver Broncos. THE LEGION OF BOOM The best their is. The best their was. The best their ever will be. GO HAWKS!!!!!

The Legion of Boom was dominant. The other element to the Seahawks in that era was Marshawn Lynch. He was a very unique individual with the heart of a lion. I encourage you to watch and react to some Beastmode highlights.

Just my 2 cents, but I think that team doesn't win the superbowl without Sherman and Russell. Chancellor and Thomas were 2 of the best safeties at the time, but the absolute best of the best on that team were Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson.

Seahawks were very good, but I offer the 2000 Baltimore Ravens as the #1 These Ravens won a Super Bowl despite going five straight games without scoring an offensive touchdown. They allowed one offensive TD in 16 playoff quarters; the Giants did not score an offensive point in Super Bowl XXXV. Overseen by DC Marvin Lewis, Baltimore's defense may be the best ever. The Ravens (12-4) ceded 10.3 points per game and in 20 games allowed only five teams to surpass 10 points. Ray Lewis earned Defensive Player of the Year acclaim and Super Bowl MVP honors, and his Peter Boulware-Jamie Sharper linebacker mates joined Rod Woodson and a host of locked-in role players to produce all-time defensive dominance.

Definitely top 5 greatest defense of all time. Only because in Superbowl 48, they decimated the most prolific offensive of all time. 43-8.

I would have picked Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor for the best two but Richard Sherman, Russell, and many of the others were all so good, they played with a chip on their shoulder, many drafted in the lower rounds of the draft and shouldn't have won like they did, but also Coach Pete Carroll also should get a lot of credit for making them believe they can win. It was also good to hear former player turned long time Seahawks announcer Steve Raible's voice and his excitement at the calls.

They were easily top 3 defense ever, and arguably THE BEST! The Denver Broncos had the #1 offense in history, scoring over 600 points and over 6,000yrs in a season. Look at what this defense did to them in Super Bowl 48! The Broncos never stood a chance! We went to back to back Superbowls. We played two of the best Qb's to ever play the game in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in Superbowl 49 where Wilson threw an intersection on the goal line. Should have ran the ball with BEASTMODE! Four chances to run the ball with Marshawn Lynch, we would've been guaranteed back to back Superbowl Champions! Everyone says that if they won that second one, that they were positive that they would've made a third Superbowl in a row. Losing Superbowl 49 just completely deflated the moral of the team and it just fell apart from there. You need to watch the other highlights of The Legion, where they show all the big hits from them. Brandon Browner 6'4 240lbs and Kam Chancellor 6'3 230 were some of the scariest hitters in their day. You can't name just two from that secondary. The best would be the trio of Sherman, Chancellor, Thomas. The other cornerback changed players throughout the years. GO HAWKS!!! 2023 SEAHAWKS IS THE ALL NEW LEGION OF SPOON!!! CHECK THEM OUT!!!

LOB is one of the top 3 defenses of all time in NFL history, and they aren’t #3 If I had to pick 2 players, it would have to be Kam Chancellor and Marshawn lynch. Kam put fear in every receiver, and marshawn was the heart of our offense/team. You could easily swap Sherman with chancellor. It’s hard to pick because so many players were elite on that team, especially on defense. Kam, Bobby, Cliff, Bennett, maxwell, Sherman, Thomas, so many ballers
