It's not just the children.... its the welfare of the ADULTS too... My best friend was addicted to heroin. I TRIED to talk to his Rabbi to get involved and help--NOTHING WAS DONE. He said it would bring "great shame" to his parents. ONE YEAR LATER HE'S DEAD. Now I have to live with the guilt knowing I could have gone to the police but I was so scared of the situation with his parents not believing me or him getting shunned. This is a very real thing.

There are many insular religious communities. Some are very valid communities of faith, and others are cults of secrecy. The issue with these extremely insular communities is that horrendous abuse is easily hidden and victims have no means of escape and no recourse. How does society address this issue? To me, it seems inconceivable that our society simply says that because communities of faith are insular, they are allowed to hide abuse, molestation and torture - both physical and psychological. The question is how do we as a society find a means of balancing the rights of privacy and religious freedom within these communities against the rights of the individuals within them to protections from unimaginable abuse. From my research, it is clear that these insular communities of faith, when faced with children confessing molestation, or with an individual in some way nonconforming to the community, resort to extreme measures to hide issues from the outside world and to force individuals into conformity with the community’s ideals. There must be a safety net for these vulnerable and defenseless individuals, even within these most private and closed religious communities.

God will deal with them. As a survivor who never got justice, I hold on to that. The inability of the victim to come forward not only further harms the victim even more. It also provides no opportunity for the repentant abuser to come clean, ask for forgiveness, and pay his debt to society for harming an innocent. Forgiveness I have given for my own benefit, but my perpetrators don't know. I don't know if my perps are repentant, but I know I felt a wave of release and relief wash over me at that moment of forgiveness. We all are only forgiven to the measure we have given forgiveness to others. This is unbiblical to not hold the abusers accountable.

Growing up kids would have herpes all over their faces and it would look disgusting. Unfortunately there is so much child abuse going on today. Irrespective of religion, how many lives where destroyed by Catholic priests, Jewish, Amish, Christian, Muslim etc, could even be happing next door to you. The victim is in most cases made to feel guilty of the abuse. Perhaps the answer is that the abuser needs to receive the death sentence or life (and I mean life) in prison, because by sexualy abusing a child they have destroyed that child's life. How many of the victims commit suicide because they could not live with what has happened to them.
