I have a lab called Rusty. A couple of weeks back he was attacked by an XL bully (the only dog that's ever attacked him). Thankfully didn't do too much damage just a deep cut to his ear. Both were on leads and completely unprovoked. Fast forward to the "ban" news and I see a post on the local towns facebook page from a woman with a bully. She had pictures of her and the kids playing with it in the park with a written message about how amazing they are and a lovely family dog..... It was the SAME goddam dog that had attacked my lab in the exact same park a couple weeks previous! The Irony!

I will make the point that while allowing that dog near other dogs is irresponsible, dog aggression is VERY different than people aggression. I worked with handling all kinds of dogs for a period of time, there were a lot of dogs that were perfectly fine with us and children, but that had a red mark because if they were allowed around other dogs they would attack them. There are also dogs that get leash aggressive, as in they get along with dogs when off leash, but when on leash they get super defensive since the lead limits their ability to run off and can make them nervous around stranger dogs. So I will say it's very feasible that the dog is fine around people but not other dogs, or is just leash aggressive. That being said if you aren't sure whether your dog is dog aggressive (or if you know it is), it is absolutely irresponsible to let it around other dogs with no precautions.

Where I live, these dogs are so called "listed dogs" (dog breeds with a higher potential of harm) and you need a permit to have those. That means basically, you need more training as an owner and there is a character testing of the dog, if you or the dog fail, you can't have the dog.

I met a guy on a train the other day who had an XL bully with him. He looked like the type who'd get a big aggressive dog for the wrong reasons, but actually chatting to him he seemed pretty responsible. He just kind of accepted the new rules saying "I've got to start muzzle training him and he's going to have to get the snip". His attitude seemed to be "it is what it is" rather than "the rules are stupid and I won't follow them". The dog itself seemed pretty chill but I have no doubt it could have absolutely wrecked me if it wanted to.
@Killjoy_Mel

Good to hear. But then that's a responsible dog owner who knows the dangers, has done the work, and doesn't take the bully ban as an attack on him as a person. The reason why these bullies are getting banned is because far too many bullies to be acceptable do not end up in the care of an owner who's content to follow the rules because he understands why the rules are for, and who has dine what had to be done even before the hammer came down.
@magnusbruce4051
@magnusbruce4051 Жыл бұрын
@@Killjoy_MelOh yeah, just to be clear, I'm not against the ban at all. While a bad owner will lead to a bad dog, a good owner cannot erase the traits that are bred into a dog. Like when you have a retriever and it retrieves things you say "yep, that's what he's supposed to do". When a dog that's built to kill and fight decides to maul a child it's suddenly nothing to do with the dog. Similarly, although I think huskies look amazing, I wouldn't ever get one because they can and have turned on their owners. I think I'll just stick with owning border collies as, although they're a handful, they're not aggressive breeds and imo they look basically the cutest out of all breeds.

i think they should treat xl bullies the same as other potentially dangerous animals that you can own. make people get licensing and certification and restrict the breed to specialists, the same way people own venomous snakes and alligators and shit. background checks would also be a good idea cos for obvious reasons you dont want a wrong un owning a giant ball of biting.

The thing is…you don’t take your those animals out on walks in the public. You don’t put a collar on your pet snakes, alligators and whatever hell else people own, idk it could be tigers who need a lot of space and activity but THEY ARE NEVER SUPPOSED TO GO OUT IN THE PUBLIC. But with these dogs, walking/exercising them is necessary and accidents happen way more often than with other dangerous wildlife. The thing is, nobody is surprised when a Labrador wants to go for a swim in a lake or when a sighthound wants to chase after a squirrel because they know they were bred to do a job relating to those activities. It’s instinct for them. So I don’t get why people try to say that it’s 100% how you raise it. When you get a dog that has been bred for a particular purpose, you have to take on that responsibility and be aware of its instincts. Doesn’t matter if it’s cuddly with your six kids, it if was bred to hunt small game, it’s not gonna care if it’s chewing through a wild rabbit or your neighbours shitzu should it get the chance. Also a lot of people get these types of breeds and then deny that part of their intention when getting it was to have an intimidating dog. XLs are just a result of the wrong people owning a dog that can absolutely not be treated the same way as more social and friendly breeds.

My family was told we had a banned breed. He was sold to us as a Staffordshire Terrier, and I still believe he was (maybe he was a cross or something?), but we took him to the vet with a gut issue. The vets barely looked at him, decided he was a banned breed and, didn't take him to some specialised facility and didn't even ask where we got him from, they just put him down. That is what this leads to; people tend not to want to get into trouble and choose the most hassle free solution. Also, don't trust the phrase "he's a sweetheart" or "wouldn't hurt a fly", whether they're saying it about an animal or a person. People are biased and it's an easy way to be dismissive. These people probably raised their bully like it's a Border Collie; different breeds have different specifications for raising them, so when a person who's ignorant to that raises an aggressive breed, the dog gets over-excited, it stresses them out and the owner mistakes it for playfulness. And that's why I think it should be a licensing thing; go through a course or something. Don't ban them because lazy people who want no trouble kill them "just to be safe". Now that they're banned they'll just become the next breed that's trafficked in and arguably becomes even more dangerous because you have to go through a whole sketchy process to get one.

Yeah would definitely be much worse if people were buying them from some sketchy puppy farm that mistreated them, but that probably happens anyway because they would be cheaper. If they put in a licence for XLs they would also need to tighten up monitoring on that sort of stuff, maybe fund the RSPCA or something to do it for them, though, saying that, the government is more likely to give one of their friends from down the pub with no experience in that area the money for it and call it a day

I absolutely believe there’s more of a likelihood that smaller less suspecting breeds are more vicious and likely to attack but that doesn’t change the fact that not every breed has the sheer muscle power these ones have and the capability to cause the same amount of damage. I owned a staffie for most of my teen years and he was wonderful, such a sweet boy who would sleep in my bed because he would get scared sleeping alone and the one time in my life I’ve ever been bitten by a dog was by a jack Russell mix but when that dog bit me it just hurt for a bit, when these larger dogs attack you you’re gonna get your jaw ripped off. I love dogs and absolutely believe 90% of the time it’s down to how they’re raised but even the most loved and responsibly trained animal can snap because it’s an animal… they have animalistic instincts and when your dog has the muscle mass of Eddie Hall it’s not looking good for you if they ever flip out. It’s also such an over the top reaction, Rishi Sunak isn’t about to take to the streets with a meat cleaver to start demolishing every pitbull resembling breed he can find, banned dogs can still be owned in the UK it’s just much tighter restrictions around owning one.

There's such an easy solution to this, before you get an XL bully you need a license and to get that license you need to go through extreme training for however long it takes, then once you have your license you can get your hellhound called Princess but you have to bring your dog to mandatory checkups every 6 months and if you don't then you lose your license and your dog. The public can't be trusted with these dogs, I could literally go and buy one tomorrow and then just set it free on a playground.

Muzzles. It worked in my country for all of those 'dangerous' breeds. We looked at thee stats and picked the dogs that were top of the list for attacks which caused severe injury or death, put them on a list and made laws that required they be muzzled and on a leash at all times in public, and now we have significantly lower numbers of severe injury and death from those breeds.

I definitely agree that these very powerful dogs need specialist owners. People say how "they're bred to be agressive" but would you send an untrained boarder collie out with a bunch of sheep because "they're bred to do it"? No, but once they're trained to do it, they are VERY good at it. I think the same is applied with Bullies. They're not bred FOR something, they're bred to be GOOD at something, and if that dog is bred to have huge jaw muscles, a powerful/heavy build, and the strength of a thousand men, it definitely has the power to kill. I don't think they're personality is meant to be this horrible beast, but sometimes when training & socialising isn't done, things can go wrong very quickly.

What? Do you think that babies are also born as blank slates? Or would you agree that some infants and toddlers are more calm and even tempered, while others are more active, aggressive and stubborn? Same with dog breeds. Some breeds are bred for strength, intelligence, or aggression, which large Bullies are. It's not all nurture, a good part of that breed is nature. Some dogs, you can train them within the inch of their lives, and they will always remain more dangerous. And it's not a big deal when your little pomeranian is a bit more tetchy, but when it's your XL Bully, then you've got a 110lb problem with claws and teeth in your hands. The second problem is that you simply cannot guarantee that these dogs will end up being bred responsibly, because breeding responsibly is difficult and expensive and turns lower profit than a puppy mill. The third problem is that you cannot determine with certainty, which dog owners have the experience, the temper and the means to make more or less sure that their bully isn't a threat to anybody or anything. You just cannot. So yes, in this case the easy solution is the best solution, because there isn't a world where the government will provide diligent oversight and resource to making sure that bullies are bred responsibly, trained responsibly, and owned responsibly. And the right to have a large, strong and often aggressive dog breed does not trump a human's, or even another dog's or cat's right to remain alive and unharmed by said dog.

Most owners who's dog ends up hurting someone always says "I dont know why this happened, they would never hurt a fly..". Banning the xl bully will cause irresponsible backyard breeders to breed bigger dogs. Cane corsos, presa canarios, great danes, boerboels, Caucasian shepherds, neapolitan mastiffs, dobermans, rottweilers, St Bernard's, newfoundlands, Irish wolfhounds, bernese mountain dogs are all large dogs that have the ability to kill and be aggressive, and if people decided to irresponsibly breed them exclusively to be aggressive and dangerous that doesn't mean the entire breed is dangerous. Most big dog breeds are at least 50 year old, with the xl bully being established as a breed in the 1990s in America , we got them in the uk around 2014. They're not a new breed, they're not some new hybrid a druggie bred to protect their product, they were bred to be a family dog and when bred according to american kennel club standard they are required to have the temperament of a family dog (calm, loving)

I know for a fact the vast majority of XL Bullies in the UK will be absolutely fine dogs. The point is, they have the potential to be absolutely lethal, and they're easier to turn into absolute killing machines than most dogs. Most chihuahuas are more violent and aggressive than the XL bullies, but the worst that's going to happen if a chihuahua attacks you is a nip. You can turn just about any dog violent, but the government has good reason to ban the most dangerous ones. The bully walk in Birmingham is almost definitely going to go wrong. I bet there will be at least a few arrogant dickheads who decide to take one there and let it off the lead. If there's no lead on the dog then there's absolutely no stopping them at that size once they start.

I do find it sad because it's down to human intervention and selective breeding. I adore bull breeds and have 2 Staffy crosses myself. Aggression is often a result of anxiety, caused by lack of care, socializing or abuse; which people have then bred to make a genetically aggressive dog. The first 16 weeks are the most important for behaviour/ training in any dog's life, no matter the breed. People also need to realize they have Terrier in them, which were bred for hunting small, fast and squeaky animals, which is another reason why they shouldn't be trusted alone or off lead around children; +their history of being bred for fighting. Their size and power is also another factor, my staffy crosses are only small/medium and it's like having 2 small horses. Also, the type of people that own them really don't help, it's usually chavs or some skin head looking dipshit using them as status dogs. Bull breeds can be the sweetest, most loving dogs, but unfortunately as ever, humans have ruined them for their own entertainment. Also, there are 2 Maltese little shits down my road and they will literally try and bite your ankles, but no one bats an eyelid because they're small, but they're nasty bastards. If anyone reads this, sorry for the long rant. I just love dogs and would hate to see genuinely good dogs being destroyed because of some morons who think they're 'hard' because they have a big dog.

Yeah, people who own bully breeds often seem completely blind to the fact that they were selectively bred for fighting. Not guarding or protection or working, but for fighting and killing for entertainment. Nobody would deny that a border collie has herding instincts or that a labrador has retriver instincts. Personally I feel those breeds should be treated like pugs or other poorly bred dogs, and have the harmful traits bred out of them over time.

As someone that runs a vet clinic I can say these dogs are some of the gentlest animals around. When I see a bulldog I automatically assume it ia a gentle giant because most are. Chihuahua and yorkies and Shibas and Chows. Those are nasty dogs that I approach with caution becuase they almost always bite. Now when a bulldog is aggresive it is a huge issue because of the power they have but honestly then you might as well ban German Sheperds and Irish wolfhounds and Rottweilers and Saint Bernards. Banning a breed does not solve the problem of poor training which is the actual problem. You want to do something about it then make training mandatory for anything bigger then a Golden retriever but don't say something dumb like ban bulldogs because less than a per cent of them are dangerous and the rest are some of the most loyal family dogs you will ever meet. That is just nonsense. Owners are the problem not the dogs. Aggresion is just fear or lack of understanding due to poor training. Dogs want to listen and be loved and a good owner knows that. Also the breeds I mentioned that I am cautious around are because I find people that get them do not know how to train them not that the breeds are bad per se.

What is with these people. They legitimately have the worst arguments I've ever seen. Individual examples of a population being good (or so they say) aren't an argument against basic regulation for obvious reasons, let alone using whataboutisms about other weaker breeds attacking (no mention of harm or death at all) and actual literal sexual predators/murderers existing as if they're crimes aren't globally outlawed and it's as easy to pick them out of a crowd as spotting a humongous dog. Also I like how some people bring up the owners being at fault as if that's not already something everyone knows; did they think the dogs were the ones held liable for the damages or something? Is the dog going to be charged for it's own license or some shit?

Personally, I've met beautifully trained XL Bully dogs that are the sweetest dogs I've ever met. However, I understand why people are scared of these dogs. They are built like bears and can be deadly. I reckon they should be treated like other dangerous animals (like wolf-dogs, venomous snakes and such) where you need to be licensed and have the knowledge of how to treat and train these dogs, and the facilities to house one to own one. The outright ban is likely to result in a lot of over-breeding before it takes effect. Lots of bad breeding and dogs with mental health problems, making them more likely to attack and bite. This idea of a mass XL Bully march is god damned insane! Especially for these poor dogs. There will be several dogs with unpredictable reactions in one place with a massive amount of noise, smells and sights which will overestimate them, causing issues.

It depends on how you treat the dog, and wether dog is from a reputable breeder. Most large dog owners I've met have more control over their dog then alot small dog owners who let their ankle biters run around causing chaos to other people. And before you say 'they're not as powerful as an xl' - they can still kill young kids and dogs pretty easily, if not cause serious harm l

It's just that if you blame the owners after the fact then the damage is already done; a child, adults, dogs life lost or maimed. Negligent owners are punished, always have been and clearly it isn't working.

To be devils advocate here, the dog breed is not helped by the kind of people owning them. There is a saying of “there are no bad dogs just bad owners” and there is truth and falsity to that. Yes, the kind of people who own XL Bullies probably shouldn’t be trusted with them and with good owners, the issues that the breed has would be nowhere near the degree it is today but in the other hand, the dog was bred for that purpose. I agree with George that there should be some sort of licence to own them and be treated like hunting dogs rather than domestic dogs
@Minceraft69
@Minceraft69 Жыл бұрын
I do agree. Huge dogs like this are idiot magnets. The people who buy them are primarily (not always) unintelligent people who won't settle for anything other than a huge, intimidating animal - either ignorant parents who want Cerberus as the family pet to look cool and tough and can't be arsed doing their research, or drug dealers who want a massive chunk of muscle as a bodyguard. Either way, the dogs are often not trained well (or not trained with the strictness that a huge dog like that should be), meaning that even if the dogs ARE well behaved and well meaning, they're big and powerful enough that they could easily kill or main a human or dog without even meaning to, when provoked or over excited. There is no room for error with them. If anyone less than an expert has one and the owner slips up, the bully is put down (when it's not necessarily even the bully's fault), and someone else is seriously injured. They should at the very least be licensed and regulated and only given out to people who have proven they are capable of controlling dangerous animals. They should not be household pets or bred in backyards

I can see both sides honestly, I have a friend with an XL Bully and it wouldn't hurt a fly. However, when not raised right their size makes them very dangerous. So I'd say education and regulation are the way to go, not banning an entire breed of dogs.
