@Vincent_Beers3 ай бұрын
It's really just lazy. I went to an art college (graphics design) and I knew a lot of the people in film and theater courses. Half the people that took a screenwriting course thought they were being clever to name something or someone macguffin. The only thing more common was naming something hard to find "unobtanium" because it was hard to obtain. And that was before it became mainstream in that stupid generic avatar movie. There's certain key words that were taught as tropes, once you learned basic plot outlines you could write short cuts with tropes and key words and then just swap them out to make them sound unique. It's the basis for serial tv writing as well. Fixed script timing etc.

@@Vincent_Beers I've seen one good use of that, and it was in Poptropica. There's an "island" where you become a mall cop, and you need to stop any burglars from stealing the whatever-gizmo-atron from MacGuffin's before the release tomorrow. The gizmo doesn't matter, you don't even know what it does, and people go Absolutely nuts for it. It's basically whatever dumb thing apple puts out. Spoilers in case anyone decides to play it on Flashpoint: The funny thing is, the item from MacGuffin's is actually a red herring! The real thing the burglar is there to steal is a mint condition Honus Wagner baseball card from the safe at the sports memorabilia store. There's also quite a few cheeky references to other stuff, like a DeLorean in the parking lot, and the name of the mall changing from "twin palms mall" to "lone palm mall" like what happened in Back to the Future.

The best part of a heist movie is laying out a plan and then things go wrong and seeing how the protagonists adapt. Having the plan be the sequence and everything goes off without a hitch is like heist movie blue balls.
@clairem67482 ай бұрын
Theres literally a format youre supposed to follow for ehen a group of characters have some elaborate plan. If everything is going to go well, you don't explain the plan and you let the audience experience it (somewhat) authentically. If something is going to go wrong, you explain what the plan is so the audience knows what supposed to happen and can watch the characters figure out how to roll with it. This movie sort of hit two birds with one stone in doing those sequences; didn't show the actual execution, and in seeing the whole plan, the audience subconsciously expects something to go wrong, which also doesn't happen

When I was a kid, I thought people were my friends even though they were mean to me. Turns out I'm autistic and I didn't really understand what they were doing back then. Speaking from experience, teen boys use that same way of bullying where they pretend to be your friend while being the shittiest person to you. There was a boy who was autistic and the boys in my class did THE EXACT same thing to him. Theyd let him into their friend groups to tutn him into their own personal entertainment. And i have social anxiety, so whenever speeches would come up, I'd just shut down. They'd pretend they were helping me or showing care by GARNERING EVERYONE'S ATTENTION TO ME and telling everyone to "be chill" while i did my speech. At first, i thought it was just them being ignorant and trying to help, but after a few times of this, i realised they were just trying to get all eyes on me. No one ever paid attention to speeches, and i was some random person who never interacted w the class. They wouldn't have been paying attention to me if the boys didn't take it upon themselves to tell everyone to. Teenagers just suck sometimes.
