I made a special flogging spanner from a 3/4 drive impact deep socket with a shank of 1/2 plate welded to it to hit with a "block hammer"to complete the 90degree part of crank bolt tighten up, never had any bolts come loose.

When I last changed my timing belt & pulleys the removed crank bolt had actually started to deform and necked/stretched from over-tightening by PO. They should certainly be tight, however when like this it is obvious that you are in danger of breaking something common sense has to prevail and I don’t think that one is coming loose!

That final tightening is fun, I snapped my 1/2 breaker and then got a 3/4 bar and socket. There is a guy in the UK that makes & sells the tool for holding the crank, £37.50 plus £8.90 P&P. His shop is really worth looking at as he also makes lots of interesting bush tools etc.

Yes he copied my brake piston tools...

I never got/get to the 90 degrees, afraid to break something. I also never had one come loose 🤷♂️

Great work Mike 👍 U should have used the German land rover manual. It says tighten up the crankshaft bolt to "gud n tighten" 😂

I’ve got the locking tool and a huge 3/4” breaker bar, but I still end up marking the socket at 12 o’clock then using the impact gun to turn it 90 degrees to 3 o’clock.

Yes that is the best - but going by the book is crazy - I can do the 90 degree if I have the engine on a stand - but not in the car

I got a very similar designed crank pulley holder tool off AliExpress. Doesn’t mention 300tdi in the description but it fits and works perfectly. I also bought a 3/4” breaker bar 1m long specifically for tightening and loosening the crank bolt.

4 seconds with a 3"4" Milwaukee 18 volt rattle gun does it.....

Call me old fashion Mike, but if you need to extend a long breaker bar, that is tight enough. That must have been beyond 200nm easily. At 150nm with locktite it isn't coming off easily. Good job, I can tell your sick of doing another timing belt!!

I would love to know what the torque ultimately ended up being after you angle torqued it.

Rather tight...

Is this a stretch bolt you "should" replace? I find that going from 1/2" to 3/4" give you more power , same length of bar , but I just feel the tool works better.

That's going nowhere. Torque setting FT.

I always just tighten them up good n tight, that 90 degree thing is a bit ott. You got to get ot off later to change the belt, so no need to be an absolute orangutang
