Fireworks on the Fourth of July is a celebration. "Fireworks," also has another meaning, as in bombing the shit out of the enemy, i.e., lighting up their world with devastation (courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue). Amazing, heartfelt song. RIP Toby Keith.
@barbjhix

@@johanna6050 I've always Associated the fireworks being shot off on the 4th of July with one of the final battles of the American Revolution, the British had brought their fleet to bear on Fort McHenry, they held American soldiers as prisoners out on their ships in Bay, and their objective was to bring down the American flag that was standing at the fort. The agreement was they brought down the flag the British won and the Americans were to concede the war. Is the flag was still flying at dawn the British were to concede and the Americans had won the freedom from Great Britain. The bombarded fort McHenry all night long with dozens of warships, hundreds of American sacrifice their lives to make sure our flags stood standing.

@@barbjhix The events associated with Fort McHenry took place in 1814, commonly referred to as the war of 1812. This was the inspiration for the poem written by Francis Scott Key, known as, "The Star Spangled Banner." Upon the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, John Adam's wrote to his wife, Abagail, Independence Day] will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. 4th of July is also called Independence day. This is the day our gov't began the war against England to gain our independence. After July 4, 1776, we fought a 7 year war. Even still, England hunted down many of our founding fathers & killed them. We believe the power must always be in the hands of the people, not the government. This song has to do with how America was attacked on September 11, 2001. That's the black eye he's referring to.

I was 17 when 9/11 happened: I can't listen to this song without the memories of that day & the emotions I remember experiencing. It's incredibly visceral! But at the same time, I experience a sort of patriotic anger. We were so hurt but as Toby says, this big dog will fight when you rattle his cage. By the way, tons of artists wrote & performed 9/11 songs and they were all good for the most part, but this one... I think most would agree this is the best. People doubted Toby's sincerity when he was talking about his father but if you notice, as he says "my daddy served..." you can see he almost appears to be choking tears back. You can really see he nearly cries every time he mentions his father.

It's amazing you all just reacted to this song: if you aren't aware, Toby Keith died last week at the age of 62 after a 2-year battle against stomach cancer. This song was written in response to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. This song literally became the unofficial military anthem, and Toby never lost all the respect for our military. I was a first responder on 9/11 (but not at any terrorism incidents), and I can tell you that on 9/11, everybody in the USA was afraid more attacks were coming in. We were trying to figure out how to stay safe, how to save all the people who were hurt... we couldn't pull ourselves away from the TV... Goddamnit, we just didn't know what came next. That evening, the folks at my fire station showed up to help. People we hadn't seen in 2 years showed up to do whatever was necessary to help. We had a candlelight vigil outside, lined up along the apron of our apparatus bays. People stopped to take pictures, to cry with us. The next day I stood in line for 5 hours to give blood: the line literally wrapped around the entire building twice! Back at the fire station, people from all over started dropping off flowers, candles, kids wrote letters to us, told us they loved us. There must have been 200 candles and hundreds of flowers all around our flagpole, some left stuffed animals. Some preferred to drop off foods, drinks, donations poured in. Kids wanting to see fire engines and parents who wanted to let us know they loved & appreciated us. We received tons of applications to join. The common sentiment was mourning, shock, disbelief, depression, and feelings of impending doom. By September 20th, you couldn't buy a USA flag because they were literally sold out everywhere. People were putting flags on their cars, lining the sidewalks with small flags, carrying them. Criminals and cops were hugging (seriously, I know it sounds weird). In fact, for a few weeks there, nobody was a 'criminal,' or a cop. Or a prison guard. There weren't men and women. We didn't have white people anymore, or black people anymore. No Hispanic, Christian, Jew... we were all equal. We were all American. In a way, I'm glad 9/11 happened. I mean, I wish it didn't happen but for a few short weeks, we were Americans. That was the only adjective of importance. The terrorists tried to scare us and change us, and they succeeded. But not how they wanted us to change. We got mad as hell. 300,000,000 pissed off Americans standing in lines to GIVE AWAY their blood. Police departments, fire departments, volunteer fire companies, the US military all received an overwhelming influx of applications. Again, we were mad as hell! Toby Keith released this song and it just resonated with people. He went to Iraq and Afghanistan to perform for free so our soldiers could relax & destress. As I said at the beginning, Toby Keith wrote an unofficial military anthem in this song, and many would probably agree that he also became the musical face of the American military. You could probably even call it pro-military propaganda but it wasn't. It was simply a song reflecting how we all felt at the time. So there's the back story. I hope this helps you to understand WHY this song was so wildly popular. By the way, I said above about the people who dropped off stuff at my old fire station... a few of those candles remained lit for 2 weeks. We never could tell if somebody was coming by and relighting them or replacing them, but nobody ever saw anyone doing it. They even stayed lit on days it rained.

I was blessed when he came in on a USO tour to FOB leatherneck where I was stationed and watched this in person. Even some of the UK and German troops came from FOB Bastion which was connected to us to watch his performance. They were also showing similar reactions to his performance. We put many boots in the ass of the Taliban and their IED factories while over there. Got to run a few missions with the UK troops and it was honestly a great time. Just got to remember we think of the US Flag like you think of your King or Queen. I also got to serve with Prince Harry and played a game of pool against him in the FOB Bastion Rec. center. Beat him 2x and made the joke well it is like the Revolutionary war and War of 1812 all over again. (Though I consider the war of 1812 a draw as neither really gained or lost territory.

We are so PROUD OF OUT COUNTRY. And it’s all of us. SOUTH, NORTH, EAST ,WEST. You wouldn’t travel a mile til you see a flag flying in someone yard. We went back in our family, Civil War, WW I, WW II, KOREN CONFLICT, VIETNAM, DESERT STORM, COLD WAR, then from 9-11 to NOW, someone in our family was in each of these conflicts. And yes WE ARE PROUD

The Fourth of July is a day of BBQ, fish fries, and picnics during the day. And come night time it's fireworks either with family or in a city display.

4th of July or our Independence Day is mostly celebrated by having cookouts/BBQs. This can be as simple as hotdogs and hamburgers with an assortment of side dishes, to full blown BBQ of all diff kinds of meats, including ribs and chicken on the grill and it can ever be a seafood bonanza with shrimp and crabs and even lobster. It varies depending on which part of the country you live and how big of a party you want to have. Let's not forget all the different desserts. Finally, most areas of the country will have a night of fireworks. At dusk people will gather in a certain area and once the sun goes down the fireworks show begins and usually lasts about an hour.

On the 4th of July in America, most Americans have a paid day off of work. We get together and have BBQ’s. We sit around in the back yard waiting for it to get dark so we can let off fireworks. If the house has a swimming pool, then we swim for a while. It can be with friends or family or both. I hope that help sum up an American 4th of July get together/ celebration.

Toby Keith's passing was especially difficult for me and my family. One of the last pictures I have of my brother Sam was of him and Toby at a USO event in Afghanistan before he was killed in action. Rest in Peace Toby Keith, my brother Sam will be happy to see you again on the other side ✝️❤️

Ok so I know that I’m late to this party but even though the reasons are different, the closest thing that I know to compare it to might be y’all’s Guy Fawkes Day. It’s a day where family and friends gather and usually grill out before watching fireworks at night. Thank you guys. I love the UK even though I’ve never been there. That will always be our origin and if it wasn’t for you awesome Brits America would never have flourished. After we worked out our differences there has been no greater friend than the UK.
