They automatically add the tip, because the service is bad. No one will tip for bad service, except for foreigners who believe you "have to tip" You never have to tip for bad service
@ESUSAMEX Жыл бұрын
The restaurants began adding a service charge to their bills because so many tourists from Europe and Latin America would refuse to tip and just walk out. So, yes, the service in Miami is now horrible because of this. There is not reason for the server to go out of their way to be nice and attentive. Now that I reside in Florida, many of my Floridian friends have complained that the service is now terrible. Moreover, many Americans do not like the idea that the restaurant chooses how much the service charge is. At least with the tip, each person can decide how much to tip.

I grew up going to SanDestin every single summer, spring break, and Christmas holiday. I went to Miami during one spring break with my roommate from Puerto Rico to visit her family. Bad service is easy to say but it depends on your expectations. South Beach is essentially a tourist trap, catering to people who may not understand that tipping is required, so the "automatically added" 20% is necessary. Generally speaking, you will not be treated "rudely" BUT keep in mind these places are extremely busy, long wait times and often with people who have already had a few drinks. Servers are human. If you worked and were treated badly by most of your customers, how friendly would you be? If you want to experience good food in the "real" Miami, then head out to the suburbs. You will get excellent service (if that's really that important to you) and enjoy some of the best food on the planet. Miami Beach/South Beach IS NOT Miami.

I moved from Ohio to the Miami and have lived in Miami and on South Beach for 20ish years now. I'd suggest getting another's opinion to get the full picture. Other than Calle Ocho being dope, I disagree with almost everything he said. He didn't even mention Wynwood or Stone Crabs. Service is fine and they include tips on South Beach because you are occupying a very valuable seat, and a waiter may get annoyed if you are sitting there all night hogging a place that they want to turnover and make money on. Drinks on the beach are insanely expensive if you are just a wandering tourist. We had a saying that the tourists overpay so the locals can drink for cheap. We always knew all the deals, happy hours and holes in the wall. I've certainly seen $40 shamelessly charged for a "nothing special" cocktail more times than I can count. So plan it out, and know that if you want to go to one of the world famous clubs, then you'll pay for the experience, but I had the most fun paying next to nothing and hanging out in dive bars like Club Deuce.

Miami is fun for a few days. The food is amazing. There are large populations of a variety of cultures, so finding awesome food is my favorite while there. I lived there for ten years but am from the Gulf coast. Most recently I was living in Palm Beach. Miami is very high crime and can be dirty. Be careful using public transportation. The beaches are meh. I wouldn’t skip the Gulf coast, so you can enjoy the white sandy beaches and fantastic seafood. Plus, there’s more sea life to experience … dolphins and manatees up close. Tarpon Springs is a little Greek village with wonderful Greek restaurants. There are little islands to visit that are off the beaten path that are breathtaking. Some require a water taxi. Little Gasparilla, Upper Captiva, Anna Maria, Cocquina, Barefoot are some of my favorite beaches and islands to take it easy. If you want to act like a local … go to Publix and get some subs from the deli and take them to the beach for lunch. Also, you have to see the springs! They are near the center of the state and not too far from Orlando. You can rent tubes and float down spring in crystal clear beautiful waters. There’s quite a few to choose from. You can even get an Airbnb with tubes and kayaks on the property located right on the springs. It’s a must do IMO. The beaches on panhandle are the prettiest - Rosemary beach, Pensacola has miles of protected beaches - stunning- whitest sands and beautiful water. Im living in North Eastern Pennsylvania right now. Just moved here two months ago from Florida, and it’s nice here … but I’m homesick and looking forward to getting home soon.

Keep in mind that even without Mickey Mouse, Miami is still a tourist town, and during tourist season, these servers get hit with nice people, but they get a lot of people who think they are entitled and don't tip, so treat them like people and like good people that you are. If you are showing up after tourist season, you may have servers who are less stressed by nasty people. You can find reasonable car rentals there. In Key Biscayne there used to be a dog track there where you can watch the greyhounds race. In Fort Lauderdale, they used to have dinner show cruises up the intercoastal waterway. It's a fun evening. The food scene around Miami is amazing. I don't think you'll find a bad meal anywhere. With that said, I'll make one suggestion, you must try the stone crab claws! I'd offer you a place you may be interested in. I live around 2 Air Force bases that you might catch the fighters training, they also have a great museum of armorment with aircraft on their front lawn. The area has its share of tourist areas also, so there's nice places to stay, nice beaches, restaurants and depending on the week there's always a festival going on.

Tips in the US cover for below minimum wage jobs among wait staff at restaurants. They make roughly half of whatever the minimum wage is in any state, so tipping is still a means to ensure good service, but at the cost of a secure paycheck. There are two ways of going about tipping for a restaurant, including it in the bill automatically or providing the option to tip. Enforcing it through automatic tipping improves the overall attitudes of the servers and makes them willing to wait more tables/really work for that extra. Optional tipping means servers have to fight for minimum wage or more in a world where some servers may have unfair advantages by sex or appearance, this model encourages infighting, often servers get the blame if the food is bad, which gets back to the cook via the server. I could go on, but optional tip places are kind of a powder keg. Higher turnover rates, refusing to serve or passing on notoriously bad tippers, higher probability of stolen tips/drama when an expected tip fails to appear, you think dealing with normal bad service sucks, try a waitress who just had a table of 15 with a bill well over $100 snub her on a tip. And yes, servers are very harsh critics of those who don't tip. That's their livelihood you're messing with, not some bonus for good service even if that is the intent of tipping as a system. You leave a poor tip for bad service and most American servers won't think "Oh, I must've done a poor job with service." They'll think "Those lousy, no good, cheapskate assholes don't deserve the service they got, I should've spit in their food when I had the chance."

I have to call some BS on the "bad service"....on Miami Beach (which is an island) yes that's a tourist trap, but here on the mainland, where most of the 3.5 million that live in Dade County are, this is not the case and I resent this dude generalizing that way....I live 15 miles inland in the western suburb of Westchester, and service here is FANTASTIC as there is tremendous competition between restaurants and stores for customers. If you have had bad service it's because you didn't travel to where the real Miami people live......that blanket generalization of his really pisses me off.

Not sure if someone mentioned... Please buy wine by the bottle if you will drink it! "Bottle Service" refers to buying hard spirits (gin, vodka, etc.) by the bottle for your table. The server keeps replacing carafes of mixers (juices, sodas...) and fresh glasses n ice buckets n garnishes like lemon/lime wedges n orange slices. It will generally cost 3-5 times the price of the bottle at a store and many places will charge an added fee for the "service" of mixers n fruit, which is NOT a part of the tip. Generally speaking...

The quality of the service is irrespective of the tip. It has more to do with the attitude of the work force and, outside maybe Las Vegas, nowhere in the US does the work force have more attitude than the touristy parts of Miami/Miami Beach. They are too self-interested than to be interested in YOU. PS: If you are there to go to the beach and enjoy the sun, Florida is surrounded by sunny beaches, thousands of miles of them, nearly all more pleasant and with lower prices for a hotel and meals. Built in tip is a bad idea. It removes the incentive to give good service.
@frederickknapp5340 Жыл бұрын
I normally tip 20% in a good place, If the service is crap, I might leave a penny on the table and if it is already added I refuse to tip and usually argue about paying that extra that is added.

Do NOT go to Miami...too dangerous! Go to Saint Augustine in Florida or up to Cherokee NC, That is something you will not see anywhere else; Dollywood and other sites are around there.

Cherokee is so beautiful. My mom took my sis and I when I was 11, it was springtime and everything was in bloom and smelled so good. It was a great trip I'll never forget, that's for sure!

Best places to get food are the small hole in the wall restaurants, don't ever ask a white person where's the best place to eat, ask a Latino for places like that 😂💯..Calle Ocho is the best place

No tip? waitress might chase you in the parking lot... lol

Yes because it’s already on the bill many see it as a pass for poor service i waitresses for more than 10 years and believe me real waitresses and waiters do not want it on the bill because if your good you can get a lot more and it makes you feel good about yourself and it makes you work harder. Definetly poorer service when it’s added to the bill.

Miami is my least favorite place in Florida, and I was born there! Two things I miss, Awesome Cuban Food and the resturant Rusty Pelican on Key Biscayne.

If you want to truly experience America stay away from the big cities, there is a very big difference between people in the city and the people in rural America. There's more group think where people are stacked on top of each other.

Well if they have bad service you legally don't have to pay 20% tax the best % is 15% before taxes if terrible service you could less or none and don't sign the receipt so it's easily disputable any slick charges or auto tipping or fees I will take out the difference or have it waived or disputed unless you sign it than your screwed
@TruthHurts2u Жыл бұрын
In Florida they have to put a notice on the menu and the bill that an automatic service fee of __% is added to the bill. If that is there you DO have to pay it by law. The worst part is if the service fee is before the sales tax that money goes to the employer who can do whatever they want with it and in many cases the server doesn't get any of it. They still expect you to tip.
@raphaelpaz8476 Жыл бұрын
@@TruthHurts2u I won't go there or any place that rips you off and you could dispute it Banking Federal laws supersedes state laws when using credit cards and some places that do that puts in fine print trust me you can refuse to pay they can swipe the card for payment and you can dispute as long as the receipt is not signed. You don't see it in the restaurants I worked for disputes and fraud in credit card divisions and never lost a dispute if they screwed me

Everytime I get a bill with a tip added I tell them to remove it or I won't pay it. I wish we could get rid of tipping.
@lavenderoh Жыл бұрын
I love tipping. It brightens peoples day when they get a good tip. If you don't like tipping, cook for yourself.
