Yep. The crowd screams at the top of their lungs when the opposing offense is on the field to make it difficult to communicate. They try to cause mistakes like false start penalties. But when their offense is on the field, they stay quiet

Beaver Stadium, which is the name of the stadium, also called Happy Valley, is the 2nd largest stadium in the US at 106,500. The whiteout game is a fairly new tradition but has become one of the craziest atmospheres in college football

University of Michigan is the largest in US, with crowds of 112,000. The BIG Ten, mostly upper Midwest schools, has greatest college football traditions as one of the oldest and largest conferences in the country, founded by member school Purdue, where others added over years like PSU in early 1990s.

I have NEVER heard anyone from the area refer to Beaver Stadium as Happy Valley. Beaver Stadium is IN Happy Valley. Happy Valley is the area where Penns Valley and Nittany Valley come together---that includes State College, Boalsburg, the Penn State Campus, the surrounding townships and down those valleys into Bellefonte and Pleasant Gap. If you stop at the Centre County Visitors Center and talk to the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, they'll include pretty much the whole county as Happy Valley.

The chant at the beginning was P-S-U, for Penn State univ. As the Penn State team was coming out onto the field they also played a snarling roar of a big cat, as the PSU team is The Nittany Lions. The crowd does all they can to disrupt the visiting teams communications, but it's amazing how quiet all those people can be when PSU has the ball.

The Michigan coach had to call a timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty (Each team gets 3 per half). Basically the Michigan quarterback was distracted by the crowd noise and lost track of the 40 second clock. When a play is whistled dead a 40 second clock begins counting. If the offense hasn't snapped the ball (put it in play) before the 40 second clock runs, they will get a 5 yard penalty.

I literally could not hear my dad standing right next to me. The very first play you watched had gotten so loud the michigan offense couldn’t hear anything which resulted in a penalty because of a delay of game. Penn state has a whiteout every year and is argued to be the best environment in college football. It’s an absolute blast and before the game people tailgate all day stretching about a km away from the stadium.

1:56 The last chant they gave was 'We are PSU' I think. 2:38 Then 'Let's go PSU'. College games are fun. Even in the smaller stadiums it can be a lot of excitement. In huge stadiums like this one you have to shout to the person next to you to be heard. 9:38 I think Michigan had to call a time out or get a delay of game penalty. You have to snap the ball in a certain amount of time.

The dates on the stadium are for particularly notable years, like when they went undefeated and won a conference or national championship. Also, as a Penn State grad, I can say first hand that the environment at these games is absolutely insane. I will also say that the lead-up to the game is incredible as well. PSU is a big school but it's in a small, rural town sitting in a valley and the whole town is bustling. Not only are the bars and restaurants packed, but the stadium sits on the edge of campus, meaning that people tailgate in the fields. People will set up on gameday or the day before and just cook, eat, drink, play games, and essentially have a big party before the game. And when it's a night game like this, it's basically just a huge celebration leading up to kickoff

For background understanding, see if you can find a high school football game video (especially Texas) and a cheerleader competition video. For some kids, they begin their football and cheerleading lives at age 5. You don't have to do a reaction video. It will just help you understand why this is such a big deal. Oh, and marching bands. That starts in junior high/intermediate/middle school. Again, if you can find a game or competition, it will help give you background.

Sad that you guys said at the end you're excited for the game but not really the game more so the crowd. Yes the crowds are amazing (Id suggest an OSU/MICH game before a Penn St game because that's the biggest rival game in all college sports maybe american sports period and PSU sucks right now honestly so the crowds are meh.) But what makes the crowd so amazing is what's happening on the field. If you dont know WHY the crowd is reacting the way they are your just yelling randomly like idiots instead of REALLLLLY getting that true experience. By not knowing why the crowd is cheering I feel like if something truly special happens you'll be to busy being confused trying to figure out why your cheering then seeing it happen and understanding and getting those chills and instinctively cheering the situation yourself and having a real moment of awe. I really hope if you guys go you take the time to learn the game and watch a few to make sure you understand whats going on so you can have a true genuine experience instead of a superficial one. I think you'd regret it if you didnt give it the try for an authentic experience. Hopefully this didn't sound too mean I just want you guys to REALLY enjoy your experience if it happens!!

Yep, Michigan had to go to a "clap count" to tell the center to snap the ball because it was too loud to call out the plays. But since the center didn't hear the clap either Michigan drew a 5 yard delay of game penalty and had to back up 5 yards further away from scoring and now 15 yards from a 1st down. What the Michigan coaches SHOULD HAVE known they would need to do--so the quarterback and center can get used to it before the game--is plan to have the QB move up behind the center--they call it "being under center" (as opposed to standing far behind the center like he was, which is "shotgun formation"). Then the center knows to snap the ball when the QB taps him, and the rest of the team has to watch to see the ball being snapped before charging forward.
@michaelhenry8890
@michaelhenry8890 2 жыл бұрын
100% the case on the first play. You have 35 seconds to snap the ball from the time the ref sets it down. That’s called the play clock. If you don’t snap it before the play cock goes to :00 you lose 5 yards so you go backwards essentially. Michigan saw the play clock about to hit :00 so they called one of their 3 timeouts on the first play to avoid the penalty and losing 5 yards. You got it mate.

I was at this game!! A regular game day doesn't start when you enter the stadium. We tailgate from 8:00am in the parking lot until its time to watch the game and then after the game we go back and tailgate for another couple of hours while we wait for the parking lot to empty out a bit. White out games are like no other experience! A common chant is for one side of the stadium to tell "We Are" and the other side answers "Penn State" - they do this 3 times and the beginning side yells "Thank You" and is answered with "You're Welcome". The college mascot is a Nittany Lion which is why you hear the lion sounds. In America, at every game we sing our National Anthem as a reminder of the great country we live in and it allows us to pay our respects to our military men and women who have / are putting their lives on the line for our freedoms. I always thank a veteran / active military for their service. It's the least I can do to show my gratitude. Penn State has a motto where Michigan is concerned: Michigan Still Sucks 😂

I live in PA and these games are louder then a metallica concert. But with as much if not more energy. The whole stadium shakes when people cheer and clap. Amazing.

Definitely something to see! I’m a Florida Gator fan myself. One video to see based on entrances: Virginia Tech vs Notre Dame (coming out to Metallicas Enter Sandman). Crazy! Love the college football vibes! So much better than professional sports.

The best entrance is Running with Ralphie at The University of Colorado. Unfortunately, the fans are (collectively) so disinterested that the overall experience suffers. But nothing beats the team being led onto the field by a live buffalo.

I was a sophomore at Penn state when this game took and was in the student section for the game. We were so loud on the first play Michigan had they had to call a time out because they could not hear the play call. I also lost my voice by halftime.

I was in the student section at this game, I loved it. All my friends and I have so much fun from the tailgate to the game to afterwards. Seeing over 100k people dressed in white rooting for the same team is something else. You need to experience it to know how loud and how fun it is.

I’m pretty sure there are headsets in the helmets. I know quarterbacks have them and communicate with the coach through them. I assume they all have them. Which is why the crowd gets SO loud. To drown out even the headsets

There’s always an anthem, in hockey its sometimes Canadas as well. For sports there’s also the school fight song. There’s also the pledge of allegiance from kindergarten all the way through high school. The show is a show of school pride

I was at the game. It was so loud and Michigan tried to call an audible. meaning they tried to change the play then it required a clap for the center to snap the ball to the quarterback. The QB had to talk to everyone almost individually which took time and the center couldn't hear the clap. Michigan was forced to take one of their three timeouts or they would have received a 5 yard delay of game penalty. We (Penn State) won that game and I was hammered.

Yes You must get to a Penn State “WHITE OUT” you will love it and have so much fun. PSU fans will show you love and fun, there’s tailgating all day and night , you can walk around in town great restaurants, lot’s of shopping, the famous Penn State Berkeley Creamery Best Ice cream around they make it theirIf the game is in the Fall Season it’s beautiful here when the leaves change color but a “WHITE OUT” anytime is so much fun!! You have to plan on staying a whole day like the game starts around 7:30-8:00 pm but gates open at 8:00am tailgating starts, games over like around 11:00-11:30pm you’ll be lucky to get out of parking lots by 1:30am-A Must to spend all day and take in all the sites and sounds You won’t regret it!! NICCCE! Hell, I'm not even a Penn State Nittany Lions fan, and that STILL gave me goose bumps.... LOL. Their colors are white & blue, and they USUALLY (I thought) do their whiteout(s) when they wear their white unis.... at least that's how a lot of other schools do it anyway. ;-) If this kind of stuff really interests y'all.... check out MY favorite team's entrance and their signature call (with 80,000 rabid Razorback fans, mind you.... lol).... The Arkansas RAZORBACKS.... with WOOO PIIIGGG SOOOIIIEEE..... RAZORBACKS..... GO HOGS GO!! ;-) And yes, the crowd noise did indeed interfere with the Michigan Wolverines' ability to get the play off in time.... thus resulting in a Delay of Game penalty.... b/c they let the play clock run all the way down to zero before the ball was snapped. ;-)

I ushered at Beaver Stadium, which is the stadium where Penn State plays football. There is nothing in all of college football like a Penn State Whiteout! NA NA NA...P! NA NA NA...S! NA NA NA...U! LET'S GO PSU!! WE ARE PENN STATE!! The record crowd is over 111,000!! During a home football game, Beaver Stadium and the parking lots (cow fields) become the third most populated area in the state of Pennsylvania. The stadium literally rocks! The capacity is 107,000 but we can get more in. There are over 40,000 students on the main campus alone. Beaver Stadium is the second largest stadium in The USA and the fourth largest in the world.

Beaver Stadium is the fourth largest stadium in the world - Here's the rankings Rungrado May Day Stadium - 150,000 (North Korea) Sardar Patel Stadium - 110,000 (India) Michigan Stadium - 107,601 (University of Michigan) Beaver Stadium - 106,572 (My alma mater - Class of '74) Ohio Stadium - 102,780 (Ohio State) Kyle Field - 102,733 - Texas A&M (My dad's alma mater) Michigan, Penn State and Ohio all belong to the same conference, the Big 10. Of course, when I was an undergrad, it was a small, intimate place that "only" held around 55,000. It's been rebuilt and added on to several times since those days.

College Football players are generally 18-23. You'll get a few outliers for various reasons...but I'd say 98%+ are 18-23. Penn State's stadium holds I believe around 105K. Something close to that.
