I’m legitimately legally blind. I had glasses from when I was a toddler. When I was 11, my eye doctor said “right. You wanna try contact lenses?” Three hours later I finally got them in. Sophie is right. Once you get used to it, it’s easy to poke yourself in the eye. I have done it for 25 years.

That's her name? Heeey, you'll know this for sure: can you tell me how are these guys related? xD 'Cause I always thought Gayna/Gaina (now I know it's Gaynor) is the mum, wife to the guy from Office Blokes that laughs the hardest... And I'm extremelly confused about their relationship. The other girl once told a story from her childhood or something and it implied Gaynor didn't know her that well. I'm just confused.

as a black person the lotion thing is 100% true. We moisturize from a young age cause our skin gets ashy from the flaky dead cells. And i'm talking "lotion" not "sunscreen". Two different things. Black people often walk around with small jar of moisturizing lotion. It's entirely normal. Cause when your skin get's dry the flakes do show up all white and chalky on your skin. We hate that and it's 100% true we make fun of our black friends when they get ashy. That is the reference in the Dave Chappelle skit with the characeter "Ashy Larry." That's really more a reference for black folk in his tv audience. Interesting, now on to sunscreen, I've also worn sunscreen since i was a child. Though it's a myth that black people don't burn they do it just takes like 8 hours of continuous sun exposure that you'll likely only get if you're working outdoor construction on a scorching day or you're a black kid outside in the 80s all summer. Do kids play outside now? lol. I think lotion, and not laying out to sunbathe does result in far less sun damage to our skin though. At least in the Western world. As an aside i once had a funny interaction with a guy at a bar when somehow this topic came up and we bet beers that this black lady none of us knew on the other side of the bar would have lotion on her if this guy asked. He lost the bet. She did. He had a laugh cause he never knew about black people and lotion. we were like 'i'm serious. Us black folk often carry lotion. I'm not making this up man! I bet if i ask that lady over there she probably has lotion." He bought my friend his next round.

I agree with most of this comment, except for the burning. Unless you're a very light skinned black person, I don't think you're likely to burn. At a younger age I worked construction in the States, in the state of Oklahoma. In the summers it was as high as 118 F, and I worked from dawn to dusk. I never had any issue with burning. I also have never heard of any Africans or black Americans I know experiencing a sun burn.

Am black. Agree with most of what he is saying. Terms, elbows, knees. My mother(RIP) telling me, brothers and sisters to "put some lotion on" so we don't get "ashy". People would call you out if ashy. Figuratively speaking, after showering I will "dunk" myself in lotion (LOL). I lotion up from head to soles of feet. Otherwise my skin will sometimes get dry and want to get ashy. If I swim I will use baby oil afterwards. When I was younger, I also remember when they were using ant legs as attempts at hair replacement.

Back in the early 70's, my sister slipped on a drink spill on a dance floor and cut her eye brow pretty badly. I took her to hospital, and whilst we were waiting in the emergency department, she told me I'd have to take her contact out. I had no idea how someone else could do it, but she got me to fish through her handbag and pull out the case, and inside the storage case was a tiny little suction cup device. You had to squeeze the base like you would to insert an eye dropper into the liquid, then point it at her eye, gently touch the surface, and release the pressure so the suction cup "grabbed" her lens, make sure the eyelids are wide open, then pull it out.

My first contacts were hard contacts, wore them for 3-4 years before I switched to soft lenses. They were awful. I remember it felt like I had a pebble in my eye for the first 2-3 weeks before my eyes got used to them. The smallest piece of dust or debris would get in my eye and I would feel a sharp pain like someone stabbed me in the eye. And then, once in a while, when putting on or taking them off, if one accidentally slipped off the iris and stuck to the white of my eye, I swear it acted like a suction cup and was just stuck on there, would take 5-10 minutes to pry it off while my eye became bloodshot and bright red. So glad when I switched to soft lenses, since the switch I’ve never had any of those issues.

Contac lenses 101: I've had hard contacs for 15 years and the way you take them out is that you squeeze them out between your thumb and fore-finger. Not placing your fingers directly on the eye. Putting your thumb and fore-finger on your upper and lower eye lids, you stretch your eye lids completely open so that they trap the contac's edges. Then as you squeeze your fingers together it pops out the contac.

Hard contact lenses are still in use because they can help with some issues like for an example keratoconus (thinning of the cornea). In that case a so called "scleral lens" which is larger and supported by the sclera (the white of the eye) will be used instead of a "normal" lens which is supported by the cornea. I've myself never used a hard lens but I've used soft lenses for the last 17 years or so. I absolutely prefer it over glasses.

My mom thought I'd was only so I would look better w/o glasses, so she decided not to do it. By the time my next appt came, my eyes had changed drastically. The dr then started, "This is why I wanted to put her in these specific contacts they help prevent the eye from changing. " My mom them got me contacts. They are the smaller type and I remember feeling like I was daunting. I wrote them for dental years. Later I switched to soft contacts. Once I tried going back, but they have me headaches. I did have lasik, but users later my eyes changed again and now I'm back to contacts.

Wore hard contact lens for years before soft lens came out. They were actually glass. To get them out you just have to blink fast and they pop out. That’s why we always ended up crawling around on the floor. They’d pop out at any time you darted your eye. They also dried out your eyes and if you wore them too long they stuck and would scratch the cornea. That’s why I switched to soft lens.

I wore hard contact lenses for about two years. You insert them about the same as soft ones and you can pull them out easily. I just gently put my finger on it and it stuck to the finger and just I pulled them out (you can do the same with soft ones, just make sure to have dry finger, if it's MOIST it won't stick :D). The problem was more about actually wearing them, they weren't as comfortable as soft ones of course.

I had hard contact lenses back in the 70s when I was a teenager and you hold your eye open and touch the contact your eye and it would stick to your eye when you took it out you would pull at the outside corner of your eye and blink, and it would pop out. Back in the 80s a guy that I worked with had hair plugs and they wrapped his head in gauze the top of his head and sent him on his way. Well when he was driving home his car broke down and he walked to someone’s house, and the lady answered the door, and he told her his car had broke down. Could he use her phone to call someone and she called the police on him because she thought he had escaped from a mental institution😂

Gas-permeable hard lenses are easier to get out and soft ones. Typically I would just pull on the edge of the corner of my eye, and the lens would release and come out. Soft lenses you have to fold to get out. But if you did get a piece of dust underneath them, it really did hurt.

Sophie, hard lenses are much smaller than soft lenses. For both types, I think the recommended method is to wet your finger with saline. The lens will stick to your finger then, instead of your relatively drier eye. Folding the soft lens is another way, but risks damaging the lens or your eye if there’s no lens there.

Hard contact lenses are still very much a thing. Ironically, when soft lenses first came out, they were less healthy than the hard contact lenses. Hard lenses were gas permeable, soft ones were not. You were very limited in how long you were supposed to wear them per day, something like 8 hours. That's not even long enough to get you through a work or school day. Nowadays, they have gas permeable soft lenses. But hard lenses still have a sizeable market share, including orthokeratology lenses which you wear at night that reshape your eyes so you can see without lenses during the day. As for how you get them out, most people can get them out by pulling on the corner of their eyelid and blinking. That never works for me, so I use a little silicone suction cup for removal.

Hard contacts, you'd pull lightly on the side of your eye and those suckers would pop right out. In fact, that was one of the biggest problems with them, they popped out all the time. Also they could get trapped BEHIND your eyes. Seriously. And they could cut your eyes! Also they didn't allow enough oxygen to your pupil. Come to think of it, hard contact lenses were just a big mistake all around.
