Here's another time Albert used that long lead to go walkabout: saw him at a club on the "wrong side of town" back in the day. The area was notorious as a stroll for the ladies of the night. Albert starts off walking through the bar, high fiving us punters while still playing a stinging blues. His roadie is behind him furiously doling out guitar lead cord trying to keep up. He does a tour of the bar, walks down the stairs to the street, and proceeds to stand in the middle of the intersection directing traffic with that wailing Telecaster. We're all gathered at the windows watching the harlots dancing away at the impromptu concert. Good times!

I saw him play at Rockefeller's nightclub in Houston in 1980. At the end of the set, he walked into the audience while playing and kept walking, slowly, through the front door, still playing, and walked out into the middle of Washington Avenue, still playing, lead trailing behind, and surrounded by dozens of us who followed him out the door. I was 24 then and thought was crazy cool. And it was.

Saw Albert twice, in the '70s, in a small club (80-90 seats). He was the most natural musician I've ever seen - notice that he never looks at his fret board. When he went out on the cord, he came by my table; I shook hands with him as he continued soloing, with his left hand, not missing a beat! Notice the strap in "T-Bone Walker position".

I had the enormous pleasure and good fortune to meet Albert Collins at a Denny's in Austin, TX, in '89. I saw him getting up to leave while a friend and I were waiting for our orders to arrive, and said, rather loudly, "I know you!" He smiled and said, "Yeah? Where you know me from, son?" The first thing that came to mind was his appearance in ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING. He laughed, said he was playing at Antone's for another night, and would I like a comp to the show? Of course, I would! Unfortunately, my arsehole boss wouldn't let me off for it - but somewhere back in time, my name's on Albert Collins's comp list! What an amazing performer and person!

Saw Albert in 91 or 92. Five feet away from my face. Nothing like a club show. Saw Buddy Guy leave the building while playing also. These guys know/knew how to work a crowd. See who you can while you can because nothing lasts.

His blues tele guitar sound is instantly recognizable. A lot of his lyrics have a great sense of humor. Have a couple of his albums and they are the kind you play start to finish. This video is new to me and what a great live performance. Thanks once again Fil. Great choice.

Man, some memories are flooding back! Thankfully, I saw the Iceman a number of times...such a classic, Texas gunslinger. Never wastes a note! Playing fingerstyle with a capo, in that a tuning, such a taunt setup...ice pick'n, indeed! I once took my father to see him, he absolutely loved his show, other than the Texas size volume! My favourite show was probably in a downtown penthouse club, of all places...the man was a raging fire that evening!

I got to see and meet Albert at a show in Chicago years ago. His style and tone are unmistakable, and he always brought a fun vibe to his shows. Came into the crowd playing when I saw him and his guitar had the longest cord I have ever seen. Had a roadie following him around so the cord didn't get hung up and pull out of the guitar! 💎Oh my! my! You bringing back great memories for me. I worked a show in 1987 with this incredible man! So sweet & full of energy! If I’m not mistaken it was his father that handled his cable while he walked around. He went out the venue walking up & down the street by the Arkansas river. Everyone following, it was nuts!! It was the most incredible thing ever!!! I can’t put into words how much fun he was!! His whole band was so nice & friendly. I still have all their autographs. He had two sax players I think 7 autographs on the piece of paper. What a special special man. 💎The Ice Man💎 love him. 🌹❤️🌹

Sher Pettit, Albert Collins is my second favorite blues guitarist, right behind Albert King. I was never fortunate enough to meet him, but know a few people who did. They say the same thing as you...that he wasn't just a great musician/showman, but was a really nice person as well. I'm so glad these videos are online to keep his music and memory alive.

I saw Albert play on that last tour, I think he had already been diagnosed with cancer, and he definitely looked ill, but he played his ass off! Debbie Davies, who had played in the band with him, was in the audience. I'm so glad I got to see that show.

I saw Albert at the Mandolin Wind in San Diego and he was on the front steps with that long cable for his guitar. I saw him at the street scene a couple years before he left us. All I can say is AMAZING!

Albert was all about style and tone. By tuning to F minor, every string (except for G) is tighter than normal, and with the capo up so high it really contributed to his piercing tone.

We saw Albert Collins and the Ice Breakers (and Debbie Davies) at Rockefeller's in Houston about 1986. I've seen A LOT of great acts over the years, but that has to be the greatest live show I've ever seen. For the encore, Collins strolled through the bar, followed by the horn section, never missing a beat, out onto the sidewalk on Washington Ave. into a late fall misty drizzle.

Great review of Albert, thanks for featuring him. I visited Albert Collins' grave in Vegas at Davis Memorial, right by the airport. Paid my respects to the man. He replaced Jimi Hendrix in Little Richard's band I believe.

A great entertainer in deed! Growing up in San Francisco, I had the good fortune to be a patron of Slim’s, Boz Skaggs club. Albert played there once a year as I recall, and we always kept an eye out for when he would be in town. His shows were always great fun to attend, and it was a big loss when he passed away. RIP Albert.

Albert Collins fan since I was 14 years old 1974 he influenced me so much I play my telecaster with only five strings and very rarely use a pick! One my heroes and one of my influences . Changed my life Take care Fil ...good choice👌

What a warm yet bitey tone he gets from that tele. expressive and there's so much flair in his performance, I'd follow him when he gets a candy bar too. the way he gets the crowd involved in the performance with those yeahs is so cool.this is the first song you said? wow. sounds like it could be an encore the way the crowds amped up. a great player and entertaining showman in one. his use of space is very good. a true master of the blues.

It's also worth pointing out that he still has the chrome cover clipped over the bridge pickup. This cover was known amongst guitarists as "the ashtray" because that was about all it was considered good for. It covers up the pickup and the string intonation adjusters (saddles) and made the guitar perhaps a bit prettier, but it prevented the player from using palm-muting which is one of the fundamental techniques for playing electric guitar. So.......it's very rare indeed to see a Telecaster in use with this obstruction still in place. Same with the Stratocaster which came with a similar cover although in the case of the Strat it covered just the sadlles, not the pickup too.

Unbelievable... In about 1984 or so The Iceman played in the Kachina Lodge in Taos New Mexico. He walked out into the crowd with that extra long lead, sat at my table also and ripped a solo while the band jammed onstage!!! And at the time I was tripping my brains out... definitely a religious experience...

I saw him twice in Portland Maine in the early 1990's. I briefly chatted with him and John B Gayden the bass player and band manager. Real entertainers and musicians. I wish they were still with us.

I saw Albert about 35 yrs ago in St. Louis in a small club. He had the long cable and during a set strolled out the front door with about a hundred of us. He played and we partied in the street for a while and then he led us back inside. Neither he nor the band missed a beat..Never forget it

So, I was searching for Albert Collins for some vids to watch, and here is Fil again! ;) I actually had never seen or heard this song before. Thanks! Totally informative video. Since I'm from Austin, I've seen Albert a few times. Definitely a few at *Antone's* when it was at 29th and Guadalupe St. To speak about your comments on his "long lead". Me and my buddy were at Antone's, sitting right by the "front door". There was a mix of all kinds of people there, but I remember some of the older black people dressed in all their finery. They thought it was cool we were there too, late 20's long haired white dudes.. At one point during the show, they started feeding Albert cable, or "lead", and he went jamming from the stage, through the club, and right by us out the front door into the parking lot! He wasn't out there long enough to order a pizza lol, but when he came back, man he ended up on top of the bar jamming!!! Showman he was! I'd say this was late '80s? Another time, i went to Antone's to see him after work, hung out jamming, and ended up dancing with a girl till the show was done.. Alas, she went home with her friends lol! Good times man! I really enJoy your vids/commentaries Fil, they're not only informative, but wow you bringing back so many memories of bands i either have seen, or am a fan of. Albert Collins was the master of the Telecaster *above the 12th fret* specifically. Has he ever played without the capo? If so, I’ve never seen it. It always amazed me, like he was so good that he had to limit his fretboard territory. Excellent analysis, Dear Fil. Rock! ❤️🤘🏼

Samantha, Albert Collins was definitely an iconoclast. I saw him play about a year before he died, he looked ill but his playing was fiery. He had two large Fender amps placed back to back and aiming towards the side wings of the stage, not towards the front or the back of his legs as most people would. This was part of a triple-bill show, and if I remember correctly, one of the other performers onstage that night was slide guitarist Roy Rogers, who also plays almost exclusively with a capo on the neck. Debbie Davies, who used to play second guitar in Albert's band, was near me in the audience.

BAM, you hit the nail on the head again with the voice comparison. If you continuously listen to someone blabbering like a New Yorker then it gets real annoying. If someone speaks only a few words that have emphasis then your more likely to listen. Albert Collins is legendary and there are so many reasons why. Excellent vid again. Thanks for this great video on Albert. I appreciate hearing all the bio info from you Fil at the end. Some things I did not know. The great bluesmen to me are all unique. No one sounds like Albert, no one sounds like Wolf, etc.Albert continues the great blues tradition of being first entertainment. As Robert Johnson, or Guitar Slim of B.B. toured the south playing the small towns, etc. the people weren't there to compare guitar riffs, or marvel at how many notes per second someone could play, they were there to have a good time with friends, to shed some worry and trouble, and just have a good time. The travelling musicians and the local musicians heloped provide that. For many blues musicians who came out of the South to play for large audiences of white folks in a concert sort of setting, it must have felt very strange. But we are all grateful for their sharing of the wonderful music and tradition of the blues, and black music. Thanks for sharing your insights!

I just love the life story of Albert Collins, what a freaking legend.

Yeah! Albert Collins! I saw him in Venice, Cal., shortly after he was"discovered" by Canned Heat, and later here in St, Louis. Just about everyone loved his stuff. Joanna Connor and Coco Montoya learned a lot from him. An institution! His not using a pick? A lot of Texas blues is basically just electrified folk blues in the grand tradition. And let me implore you again -- check out Sue Foley, also from Texas. She fingerpicks a Telecaster at blinding speed, has a great voice, gorgeous blue eyes, and if she ever makes it here I'll be in the front row.
