Frampton was so underrated. Marketing him as a teen dream/pin up boy just destroyed his reputation as a brilliant guitarist. I was really young when Frampton Comes Alive came out and my bestie was obsessed with him. We spent hours listening to Alive and then bought all his studio albums....still 40 years on, I find his music and his voice to be sublime and his guitar playing so clean...it just shimmers. I saw his last tour and he is still just brilliant.

Underrated and "sales" aren't the same thing. His reputation suffered because of the way he was marketed and he never regained that level of popularity. He never got the recognition that a Jimmy Page, or a Jeff Beck got and he really had to fight his way back into legitimacy. No one wanted to know...that's when Bowie hired him as a guitarist on his tour and gave him a chance to shine again.@@garnetnewton-wade4091

The summer of "Frampton Comes Alive" was incredible. Everywhere you went, this album was playing. At every beach. Every party. Every park. Graduation celebrations. Blasting out of cars with their windows down. That summer I clearly remember sitting on the roof of my house, catching some rays, blasting this album. And not one neighbor complained!😎

James McKellar - Unfortunately he has announced this coming tour will be his last because he’s been diagnosed with a degenerative muscle contraction disease which hasn’t affected his play noticeably yet but probably will within a few years. Sad, but his attitude about it is pretty amazing. There is an experimental treatment he might try so who knows? But most likely he’s throwing it in after this tour.

Indeed Peter did. The girls used to swoon over his looks, but his fantastic guitar playing and equally good voice was somewhat overshadowed by the popularity of "Frampton Comes Alive". He was part of Humble Pie's early success, also. Peter also credited his mate David Bowie for his comeback, by asking Peter to be the guitarist for his "Glass Spiders" tour.

I saw Peter live here in Chicago, Illinois last july on his farewell tour at a huge outdoor arena I can tell you this, he hasn't lost a thing. His soloing, dynamics, chord inversions, vocals were all there. He did all his classics and even some blues which blew me away. His encore song was 'Do You Feel (Like I do)'. He must have done 7 or 8 minutes on the talk box alone on that song. The crowd went wild, people were dancing in the aisles and it brought me back to the glorious mid 70's. His opening act was Jason Bonham & The Led Zeppelin Experience. Talk about a real good show - Zeppelin & Frampton. Doesn't get any better!

Oh yeah…Frampton with Humble Pie!! My very first concert at age seventeen was at The Fillmore East NYC to see Humble Pie, oh what a night, truly awesome! I’ll never forget Gilded Splinters at that show. Pie opened for Eric Clapton, Derek and the Dominoes! Just an unbelievable night. Man, I hear you about the Frampton/Marriott double guitar work!! I was lucky enough to see him at the Beacon Theater in NYC the first time he played it live after getting it back. He told the whole story. He always puts on a great show. For a while I'd see him in smaller venues when he was not selling out anymore. I am glad he is now getting the recognition he deserves. Tragic about his illness. But he is always positive and cheerful. He can play gypsy jazz too. Gotta love him!

The 70's were wonderful....I remember watching The Midnight Special every week and driving around in my red Chevelle with the windows rolled down while Frampton blasted on my 8 track. Those were the days. Frampton was great, still is, but the attention was on his appearance and it over shadowed his skill. I loved his hair! Thanks to his buddy David Bowie for helping pull him around. Also gotta give a big thanks to Bob Mayo for adding perfect back up. Thanks for sharing.

The "Midnight Special" was treat each and every week. Peter Frampton is a much underrated guitarist, highly skilled in acoustic work as well as electric lead stuff. His period with Humble Pie consists of an aggressive and heavy blues based guitar sound; lest we forget about his vocals which are exemplary. Great player. As usual, a fun and interesting post!

I remember watching this as a 13 year old learning guitar, and i was floored! PF tone, phrasing and use of pedals and talk box were so on point! Frampton is probably the prime example of how being promoted and thought of as a teen idol can totally overtake and make people not focus on ability! PF was and still is a master player who NEVER received his due as one of the best of his generation! Another spot on review and analysis!

Saw Frampton play live about 6,7 years back performing at our Erie County fair. It was an absolute beast of a day-- stifling hot and airless, gray and moist and stuffy with intermittent drizzle, and they were playing on an outdoor stage setup that must have blocked the occasional meager breeze off from their backs. Horrible situation for anyone, but you'd never have known it from the band's enthusiasm--- they performed like it was their favorite gig, doing old faves and new jazzy tracks, and were obviously enjoying themselves like crazy. They played longer than they had to, Frampton was amazing, and this song lasted, I think, about 20 minutes and never lost our interest. I wouldn't hesitate to see him again, given the chance. The band was tight; the direction, blissfully loose.

Peter said his career harmonically changed when he converted to the 3 humbucker Les Paul tone (a 1954 LP Custom modified). Peter pretty much was the pioneer of the 3 humbucker LP with a more diverse wiring scheme that gave him more flexibility. He had a master volume and tone for the Bridge and the neck together and then a master volume and tone for the middle pickup. Whereas stock Gibson wiring scheme had that middle humbucker was "live" all the time variable to the volume control. Peter's rerouted wiring scheme: Position 1 Option: Bridge with the alternative to blend in the middle or null. Position 2 Option: Bridge and Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null . Position 3 Option: Neck with the alternative to blend in the middle or null.

My Peter Frampton story ... Frampton was touring the Comes Alive album as I was approaching my 16th birthday. As almost everyone else, I loved the album and listened to it almost endlessly. He was coming to Albuquerque, an hour and a half drive away. Nearly half of my classmates were going. My mother offered to buy two tickets for me and a friend of my choice as a birthday present. I said, "Oh, I don't know. Thanks Mom but I've heard about rock concerts and I don't think I want to be around all that pot smoke." :DDDDDDDD I never again had a chance to see him and regret that decision to this day. Peter Frampton touring the Comes Alive album!!!! Doh!!! The next year, I attended my first concert, Heart.

I had a massive poster of Frampton on my wall as a kid, his shirt off, guitar on and wild smile drawing you in...of course, there was much discussion amongst my friends about his daring lilac satin trousers and incredible wavy hair ..but nothing spelled ROCK at a concert like listening to Do You Feel Like We Do? Yeah, that song was played to absolute death on the radio. But it was so magical with that talk box stuff. His choice of notes with that little hint of jazz in there at times. What's especially cool is that this performance was just a few weeks before Frampton Comes Alive was released. He wasn't that widely known outside of a few geographical areas. He has said in interviews that he was hoping this live album would be his first gold record, 500,000 copies. Well, well, well!

@@tupelohoney622 I saw him in concert twice and Lexington in 77 and 78 if I remember correctly. I would love to see one more concert with him. Hopefully he'll be coming through close to Kentucky! When he came out with Face The Promise he let people sign up to be on his Street Team. As a member of the street team you got 25 cork coasters with the album on the front and a bunch of Flyers that you could pass out and I passed out everyone and gave away all the coasters except for two which I still have in a box over here somewhere. I'm giving all my rock and roll memorabilia to my son when I pass! I just checked the concert tour dates, and sad to say I missed him when he was in Louisville and Nashville because I was working at the time. 😭 It's a shame these good concerts don't come along when I'm unemployed right now. I saw Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band back in the early 80's ... can't remember who opened for them ? It was in Massachusetts... maybe The Cars ? First off,this is the BEST version of this song. No whistling over the intro and a super clean performance of a great song! The audience were captivated and were there to listen and enjoy rather than drink,smoke,whistle and raise hell.

I had the pleasure of seeing Peter play in Detroit during his 1976 tour. Great, unforgettable concert. He truly gave it his all. I continued following him for many years and had numerous albums. I learned many of his songs on my acoustic - he was a real inspiration. But as with many things in life, he fell by the wayside for me, which I now realize was such as shame, because I now know and appreciate the full scale of his talent. He played with George Harrison, toured with David Bowie and the lead guitarist, etc. If you haven't heard Float by Peter and Gordon Kennedy, give it a listen. Incredibly beautiful instrumental. I'm picking up my guitar after a long abstinence and one of the first songs I want to play is Winds of Change. There's a cute story behind that one. Once when he was visiting George Harrison, he was picking up guitars from his wall, and when he was playing a particular acoustic, he asked George, "What IS THIS?" George replied that that was one of his special tunings. "Don't steal it!" When Peter tells the story, he laughs and says, "Well I went home and stole the tuning and that's when I wrote, Winds of Change." Always one of my favorites.

Sadly, due to his degenerative illness which atrophies the muscles in his legs, arms and fingers, his playing days are numbered. Always remembered and treasured for the icon he is.❤️🙏

As a very young man, I used to go see concerts almost every weekend during the summer. You could get a ticket to most shows for $12 or so, (yes, I'm that old). One weekend I made the 2 hour trip to the concert venue to see Stevie Nicks. I went alone because NONE of my muso buddies wanted to "waste their time" going to see her. Full disclosure, she was AWESOME in concert..! What was really awesome for me though was when I saw all my buddies a couple days later I got to tell them that Peter Frampton OPENED for her show, and that not only was Bob Mayo on the keys for Mr. Frampton at that show, his bass player was none other than Tony Levin. My friends were PISSED that they had stayed home..!!! The moral of my story, don't stay home, GO SEE THE SHOW..!!!

Gone too soon. also don't realize the classic show me the way was Bob strumming away on that 12 string that drives that song. one Google's of Bob Mayo you are pleasantly surprised what a great musician he really was and gone from us way too soon. great video love Pete sadly he has come to grips that he may not be able to play too much longer but the great thing about it is he's doing everything you can fill in as much time as you can I'm sure many have seen the interview from about earlier this year where he diagnosed what is had happened to him..

Bob was a great New York guy jam with many people before Pete. plays with Hall and Oates for a while and a whole lot of others. in fact it's quite a few videos were Bob's not playing the keyboards and he's playing the guitar.

I'm from the Beaches of the Carolina's early mid fifties construction worker so growing up Pete and Bob and many others they were our induction to recorded live music. Well probably The Best live album that I know of. Feels like a piece missing . Wondering if your getting that too. Thanks so much for the info. I'm sure i watched this when it originally aired. The Midnight Special was a must see every Friday night. All the top bands of the 70's performed their current and past hits absolutely live, exactly how they wanted to do them. At school everyone would be talking about who was going to be on that night. I wish this form would come back, but sadly it seems unlikely to ever happen again.

Over the years I have attended several of jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli performances (I just saw him a couple of months ago with Ramsey Lewis). John tells the story that when he was in high school, he was in his bedroom learning some of the lead parts from "Frampton Comes Alive" when his father, the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, stuck his head in the door and said, "if you can play that, you can play jazz!"

Sally you have to see him this summer on his farewell tour. He has a nerve disease and has announced his retirement from touring. For a few more days Live Nation is doing their $20 ticket special for a lotta of artist including Peter. Get you some tix cheap. He is a great player and human. A joy to see live.

2022: Beautiful. Peter has always been Wonderful. Great guitar work and vocals. Great Band tooo. Good mix by the network. I watched Midnight Special every week. Also, love the "Acoustic" bass amp. One of the best ever made with an 18" speaker. They made great amps. Thanks for this excellent review, as always.
