Now that was an unexpected blast from the past, a song I had forgotten, it’s been so long since I’ve heard it. I must’ve been about 13 when it came out. The epitome of uncool syrupy corny country that we all loved to hate as teens in the San Fernando Valley because we were cool surfer wannabees or rebel metals. And there was still a country scene in the SFV as it rapidly transformed from rural to suburban, especially in the north western outer reaches of the San Fernando Valley, places like Chatsworth that still had horse ranches and honky-tonk bars on Topanga canyon and Devonshire Boulevard about A mile from where Charlie M and his family used to do LSD and squat at the Spahn ranch LOL. Those bars, that in the heat of a summer Sunday at 3 PM would have a crowd in cowboy hats, and I’m sure Charlie Rich played on the jukebox. What’s so sweet about this song is when I happened to be going for a ride with my dad, usually to 31 flavors after dinner, the song would come on, and my dad would sing along to it clap one hand against his leg softly. He was kind of humorous about it because I thought the song was so damn stupid. But he would sing along and it was catchy; it was hard not to sing along to but you did it in a way that made fun of it. Anyway it’s stuck with me because my dad liked it and it was one of a few he’d sing to. hearing it today I realize he was singing it to my mother which makes it all the sweeter as they’re both deceased. My father didn’t generously demonstrate his love, but in the smaller ways he did show it. And I love this song and I love country. My problem with Charlie and so many other great singers is I can’t reach that upper range unless I go into a poor falsetto. I can go lower but I can’t get that high. and it seems like so many of the songs I like you need the upper range which to me is certainly Tenor territory. And when I attempt to start in a lower key my music instructor said “no you can’t do that” I asked why not and she said “it totally changes the song”. And it never occurred to me that it does. that’s what I know about music. LOL I’m learning and your instruction is great .

My first girlfriend broke up with me in the early 70's. In '73 I just bought the Behind Closed Doors album when a mutual friend said she wanted to talk to me and gave me her number. Her hubby divorced her and she wanted to get back together. On that album is a song called You Never Really wanted me. I never met Charlie, didn't know him, but he gave me advice about my love life. I've got about an hour of his stuff on the thumb drive in my car.

But that's the thing about music, you can like the song without ever really understanding the lyrics, or their implications. In the 60's, there were dozens of songs that referred to drugs and such, I had no idea about all that, I just liked the music.

When the British recognize the talent in the C/W genre', it's so refreshing. They don't have to. They can stay with their British Invasion crowd...and nobody would notice. I was honored to have someone request from me, a Charlie Rich song because they thought I sounded similar. That is flattering. I can't remember if it was this song, or another. But this brings back memories....and this was no 12 or 13 minute break- down, but was 20 minutes long....a full analysis.....

Country and Western, (as opposed to modern country) goes way back, having its roots in Appalachian and bluegrass, which was germinated from Celtic folk music. I think it's only proper more people from the UK take an interest in American country music.

In 1992, I was driving somewhere, and caught Charlie Rich on NPR's Fresh Air hosted by Terry Gross. He was plugging his latest (and I think last, he died in 1995) album "Pictures and Paintings". Of course, I had heard "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" both good, songs. All I can say is, what I heard that day far exceeded what I thought about Charlie Rich as a musician. When he could do what he wanted, the playing and vocals were much more unique . . . heartfelt and jazzy. He still used some of the Floyd Kramerish piano licks, but there was way more of him displayed. If anyone is interested, the entire interview is available on KZbin. Later . . .

Monster hit. It cut through the Country Charts and the Top 40 clutter and was fresh. Thanks for the research you did on the Silver Fox. He goes through a wide range in singing. Some reviewer in the back in the day, I think CMT Magazine, said that Charlie Rich had trouble hitting the high notes but I never noticed or cared for his review. Charlie Rich was a class act and made the music scene a better place.

This song came out in 1973. My dads gas station /garage was next door to a tavern. The jukebox could be heard in the shop very easily. This song was playing constantly, must have been pretty good beer slopin music. Sam Philips from Sun Records quoted that Charlie was one of the best music talents he had ever seen. Such a nice easy soft talking gentleman...kind of reminds me of Roy Orbison in that sense. Not too many have heard his song Mohair Sam from 1965, it hit #21 on Billboards Hot 100, its worth a listen. Charlie had quite a few crossover hits. Thanks Fil for doing this one.

Charlie called his music Country Soul, which sounds about right to me.I loved his vocal sound, and those slip-note piano stylings. On a side-note, the earliest key change I know of in any song is the Banana Splits theme tune - the first verse after the intro is a key change!

I'm really glad to see Charlie Rich. He did an originsl song "I Feel Like Going Home" also beautifully covered by Rita Coolidge, I loved his piano style and voice "Stay" from 1960 reminds me of Conway Twitty's crescendo building "It's Only Make Believe.". Kris Kristofferson reminiscent of his support to Sinead O'Connor when booed incorporated in a song lyric a defense of Charlie Rich's unfortunate painkiller an drink missteps. Kris and empathy for friends is renowned. Thanks for Charlie's recording history: I have some new old songs to discover thanks to you, Fil!
