I was a big fan of your dad’s from when I was a little kid. He was always one of my favorites, definitely my favorite as a child, and I still love his music to this day.A VERY underrated artist. I met James Burton and he and his lovely wife, Louise, gave my son and I a private tour of his studio. It was mind blowing and surreal! He played a lot of guitar for Rick Nelson and was “instrumental” in making a great sound on those recordings! That meeting and tour was a highlight of my life! I will never forget what I saw and heard but most of all, James and Louise are the most wonderful souls you will ever meet!

Very nicely done on your part Fil. Ironically, in that time frame, many people assumed that Rick Nelson had some sort of "free ride" because of his TV show parents, etc., when in fact, he was pre-judged and dismissed by tons of people and had to work harder because of preconceptions about his "entitlement". He sought to find his independence and his own voice, and eventually WAS recognized and credited for his talent, though too late to reap the rewards. Even his children were dismissed and overlooked trying to follow in his footsteps.

I saw Rick in Vegas, the January of the year he passed. His show was AMAZING...Rick sounded good and looked good. His band (R I P) were TIGHT and enthused. Total rockabilly BLISS. 10 months later Rick and the band were gone....so sad. PS: Jerry Lee Lewis was also on the bill. He was VERY intoxicated...Rick Nelson was the STAR of the show that night. Rick was a real talent and a musical icon. l was a fan. Enjoyed this performance! Garden Party was a great song. Such GREAT lyrics about the Madison Square Gardens concert when he heard booing. He had the last laugh writing Garden Party and earning a gold single with it. Hitting Top Ten in the USA and #1 here in Canada.🇨🇦 Had the pleasure of seeing Rick live here in Canada in the late 70s. Such a talented performer and great show! Got a standing ovation and 2 encores that night. Canadian respect for a class act! Fil, as always your good as Gold. I have a great deal of respect for Rick Nelson. Here is a man who could have spent his life living in Los Angeles, acting in, and producing situation comedies, but, instead he followed his heart going from club to club playing music. After his time as a teen idol it would have been so easy for him to go back to television. It certainly would have fattened his bank account. I remember reading an article where a woman went out to the local airport (probably in the 70's) to see if she could get a glimpse of her school girl crush. When she gets to the airport she sees Rick Nelson unloading his own equipment off of the small plane the he and his band had flown in on. This man worked for a living and he loved it. You gotta respect that. See Fil you're a lot like Rick Nelson. You work your butt off at something you love. Please never take it for granted. As always God Bless!!!

I love, love, love Rick Nelson! Thank you so much for this reaction. I grew up watching him, in re-runs, I was only 13 or so when he passed. I, my mother and family, were all so devastated when he died. He was such a wonderful performer, a real talent. I still listen to him regularly and appreciate your videos, which not only help keep him alive to his fans, but may introduce him to others unfamiliar with him. Sigh....he was so handsome and his voice so beautiful. It brings a tear to me eye to this day that he was taken away from us in such a terrible way.

Our little beach trailer at El Morro was in the next cove down from the exclusive enclave where the Nelson family owned a weekend home. Of course, I had a massive kid's crush on Ricky and was always hoping that one day I'd spot him walking on the beach, he'd see my stunning 8 year old self... and the rest would be history! Loved this analysis of his fun guitar playing and all the respect you gave my first true love. Rest his sweet soul.

Thank you for another video on my all time favorite artist. Also got to give credit to his great band - Denny Sarokin on vocals and guitar (still writing and recording today, check out his Brighter than Babylon cd), Jay De Witt White on bass and vocals, the great Steve Duncan on drums and vocals, and the immortal Tom Brumley on pedal steel (Tom previously played with Buck Owens). A lot of people thought Rick's records sold just because of all the exposure on television, I think his success after the tv show proves that wrong . He was a real musician - if anything, acting was more like a hobby to him. When he discovered rock and roll, that was what he put all his focus on - performing live and recording. He worked at becoming a good singer and guitar player; he made the transition to writing his own material, saying the things he wanted to say in song. Great guy, great talent.

Hi Fil! One of my all time favorite singers of all time! Rick Nelson was upset because he saw the same fate happen to the Everly Brothers. The Everly Brothers were not only moving on with the music but contributing great new material as well. While still popular in the UK and Europe, the American public ignored the Everly Brothers’ new material, preferring to keep them “locked in The Fifties”.

Great pick, Fil. Agree with all the comments and your analysis. Rick grew up in the spotlight, in Hollywood, where “show business kids” make movies of themselves and don’t give a f-- about anybody else...😉. But I never heard a bad word about Rick Nelson. David Cassidy, also a kid of Hollywood stars, got cast in the same teen idol role 10plus years later. He couldn’t wait to move on from the “Partridge Family” where most of the “band” actors faked performing; only he and his stepmom, Shirley Jones, did their own singing. He had some teeny bopper hits at that time, was a real looker like Rick, cover of “Rolling Stone”, never really got beyond teen idol status, but apparently reveled in the “perks” of the position to excess. Also died young from liver disease, a consequence of such excess. I love the message in the song as well. But the dilemma the artist feels to hold fast to his vision vs “sell out” for marketability-that is, make a living and put food on the table, is a difficult one, and many have “compromised” and I don’t think all have regretted it. I heard a very respected and successful actor say he makes the blockbuster teen action schlock so he can fund the independent film that’s much more risky but also more meaningful to him. Sounds like we all compromise at times.

Fil - Great video. Thanks for taking a look at all music, not just contemporary, 2000's stuff. We boomers love hearing your observations as a young man on some of the music we grew up with and loved. Rick Nelson was part of our musical history, and was probably underrated, even though he sold a lot of records. He was breaking new musical ground along with Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, etc. He obviously loved making music.

Rick is really good at keeping on key with his voice and guitar. He stays in time with his voice and guitar. Backed up by great musicians that kept on key and stay in time. The group queen who have recognition are always off key and out if time. I was getting ready to board a plane and saw the headline in '85. Bought the paper and saved the paper for 10 years because, I've always been a fan.

One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite (and underrated) singers. He went from a teen idol singing other people's songs with a rudimentary skill level on the guitar, to honing his craft, becoming a competent guitarist and writing this great song. It includes one of my favorite lines: "if memories were all I sang I'd rather drive a truck." Just prior to Covid shutdowns I was fortunate to see his tribute show performed by his twin sons. A good show I would recommend. They are excellent musicians and singers, but I have to say, they can't sing like Dad. Rick was one of the greats, but I feel one of the reasons he is under-appreciated is because he made it look so easy.

My brother and I went to see him and the band at the John Wayne Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm back in the day. We sat right in front of Tom Brumley (my brother was a fan of his), and had a wonderful time! I grew up with the "Ricky" on tv, but loved the later version even more. Fil, Thanks for doing an analysis and a historical presentation of one of my favorite artists. I also heard a story that Ricky Nelson told and I hope I get most of it correct. One time when Ricky was just starting his career and becoming famous. He gets a call from Elvis Presley. And of course he thinks it's one of his friends playing a joke. But then he is finally convinced that it's actually Elvis Presley. So Elvis tells Ricky to medium at a certain bowling alley not far from where Ricky was living at the time. I even believe he was still living at home with his family. So Ricky has on down to the bowling alley. And waits for Elvis to arrive. A little time later here comes Elvis. He runs up to Ricky Nelson and gives him a hug and says I love you man. And who in the world is your guitar player he's great. Ricky said I can't believe that happened to me. Well anyway I just want to say thank you for another fantastic and informative video. God bless you and all you love.

Great analysis video, Fil. I think because the song sounds so mellow, many people would not be aware of the nuanced performance. The pedal steel is very well used in this song / performance. Taste is important with such a sound cutting instrument and many recordings (hello country), show no taste and kill performances by bulldozing over the other instruments and singers. Anyway, good to see Rick and his band.

Ricky Nelson was my friend for a few hours and I greatly enjoyed my time with him. I got a kiss and that was all that was ever going to happen! Ricky Nelson was the most mannerly man I ever spent time with. He was hungry after the concert which was small and we said your in Oklahoma you got to get a huge steak in medicine park so we did. My friend ten years older than me with kids was crazy for Ricky Nelson and I had never heard of him and didn’t want to go but she talked me into it. It was a sea of thirty and forty year old women who were aging and me all of eighteen years old. I just graduated. Needless to say I got an invite to meet Ricky Nelson so we took him out as a group. Lol! He said what your all of sixteen? I said I was born in 1961. I really didn’t believe he was forty but of course he was and I’m his daughters age. I’m glad I went and met him. I was just heart broken about the crash! Ricky Nelson learned from his parents well and he was really sweet to everyone! He was just special. I don’t care how well he played like his other female fans I could just look at him playing his music. Above all Ricky like I said was sweet to everyone and he didn’t do drugs on that plane! That was insulting to such a sweet loving person. That’s what I will remember. How sweet he was.

Not sure what Nelson’s “rather drive a truck” reference is, but that was purportedly what Elvis was told when he auditioned at the Grand Ole Opry, because he wasn’t received well. The Opry manager suggested that he might stick to driving a truck. His “failure” was a rockabilly version of Bill Monroe’s Blue Moon of Kentucky. That rejection led to Elvis going on the Louisiana Hayride with Farron Young, which he eventually closed rather than open because no one could follow Elvis. 😊

Even without the early tv show and the teenage heartthrob thing, even before he enjoyed the benefits of the marketing and promotion of him as a tv star, Nelson was going to be a major star as a musical performer. Had he been a musician only, perhaps his musical accomplishments would have been even greater, but both Rock and Roll and Rockabilly Hall of Fames say enough. Always a cool 50’s vibe, and a story-telling voice.
