People back then thought that they weren't a real band, and they didn't start out as one, because they weren't allowed to play the instruments on their song just sing them ! In actuality they could all play musical instruments and became an actual band that did some touring in the 80's playing their own instruments all the way up until recent years when the members started dying off sadly .

Saw them live in 1992 or 1993. Better than countless “real” rock bands I’ve seen. During his guitar solo, Nigel had his guitar and a stand and was bouncing tennis balls off of it with his back to the stage. Suddenly the playing got REALLY good, and Joe Satriani walked onstage. Nigel, not seeing this, looked stunned by his own playing and then looked at the crowd in amazement, like, “Whoa. Look how good I am.” Freaking hilarious from beginning to end. They ABSOLUTELY play their own instruments.

I saw them at a good-sized room in Chicago (probably 500 - 1000 people) in the 80s and it was one of the best concerts I ever saw. It was hysterical, the songs were fun, and the entertainment value of what was going on with the stage show was priceless. I wish there was a video for sale from that tour. The first song saw the 3 frontmen be lowered from a 50' ceiling on wires, but the guitarist got stuck halfway down and eventually wound up getting swung as he played from one side of the stage to the other by the roadies as they pretended to be trying to figure out how to get him down. It was freaking awesome!

Christopher Guest (Nigel) studied classical music when he was younger (clarinet) and it almost ended up being his career before acting took over. He went to school with Arlo Guthrie and even played mandolin and guitar with him a bunch during that time which led to him playing in a couple of bluegrass bands before the acting bug/success took over. The guy can play.

As a former bassist, I love "Derek's" technique. Nothing fancy, incorporates the slap, the pick, exaggerated theatrical arm flourishes & he just pounds out a solid bottom that not only really fills out the piece, but also plays to the band's over-the-top identity. Also, ya gotta love Nigel's" stacked pick-ups (8?) AND most importantly, the chrome headers, lol, now that's how to get an 11 sound!

I saw them perform live in Boston in the early '80s shortly after their movie came out. Musically, they were even better then. All the songs were directly from the movie. If you watch the movie again you will notice that they rarely, if ever, go all the way through from start to finish on any of their legendary numbers. So, apparently, they had only written as many lyrics as were needed for the scenes. Subsequently, the performance was absolutely hysterical because they'd sing about half of what you expected a song to be and stop, sheepishly. It was often verse-chorus-solo-end or weird abrupt structures like that. By half way through what was still a great concert, the audience figured this out and was in on what was kind of a crazy, additional meta-rock-n-roll joke. A side note: in the mid-80s they stopped performing, at least for a while, when groupies appeared who were scarily identical to those in the movie but who were not in on the parody. They said that this life-imitating-art just became too odd and disturbing.

Their local radio station was promoting the concert by playing Spın̈al Tap songs to promote the show. My friends were totally unaware of Spın̈al Tap and had never heard of them. They did think it odd that they had a record titled "Break Like the Wind". TAP! Loved them since “Flower People” in 1967. So rare. Excellent musicians, actors, comedians that turned a movie and a mock band into a phenomenon. Thought the 2 word review on “Shark Sandwich” was unnecessarily harsh . Thanks so much for this Fil and especially the analysis of their playing!

More power and love to you, Fil. To say that I dig your videos would serve only to understate my feelings. Strangely enough, I am currently binge watching 'Better Call Saul' as I hit the hay each evening on my current trek through Vietnam and Cambodia. Michael "David St. Hubbins' McKean has a wonderful role in the aforementioned and I am always finding myself mentally reliving his days in the world's greatest band - Spinal Tap. Your work is exemplary, Fil. May you long reign! Peace and love from an Australian bassist, taking on the coronavirus here in Asia with no fear! Ha!

Spinal Tap is really paying Homage to the British Invasion and the British Ethos in Rock music. While it mocks some of the British Rock stereotypes its really meant as a nod to the Brits.

So many jokes in the film came from real life rock stories. I'm looking at the liner notes now for Genesis' "From Genesis to Revelation" album, and they explain - tongue-in-cheek: "The groups started as Genesis, biblical centuries ago. But fate intervened, other groups became Genesis and who were we to fight. So we change our name in America to Revelation. Moment later up came another Revelation. Now we are a band without a name, but we have a record and we want to give it to you, name or not."

Back in '92 they toured to support BREAK LIKE THE WIND. They played (at the time) Pine Knob, an outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, MI. It was highly entertaining to see them play live despite a drizzly rain. I own the soundtrack as well as BLtW. So much fun.

Another great analysis, Fil, as always! I couldn't help but have a bit of a giggle when you spoke about people asking you if they really played or if the tech problems at the beginning were a part of the act...I'd seen the film, I saw this performance on the night and I've watched it dozens of times since and it honestly never once occurred to me that that small breakdown was staged. I think you absolutely nailed it when you spoke about being able to relate to Spinal Tap in a lot of ways if you've been in a regularly gigging band at almost any level and the technical hiccups are right up there with one of the most relatable!! Of course, those issues never affected *me* cos I was the cool, studious and ultra prepared ̶f̶a̶i̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶g̶u̶i̶t̶a̶r̶i̶s̶t̶ bass player! 😂

Great analysis Fil. I just could not believe my eyes that these guys could play and sing that well. About the time this performance was done, we hired a bright PhD engineer from India and assigned him Spinal Tap as the first of about 10 must watch movies to get acclimated to our group, our idioms and such. He quickly fit in.
