The sport of bullriding is ever changing. It's hard to compare the old school to the new. Back in the day everything was rough from the stock to the cowboys. Then you've got the era that JB came in, some added safety features and the start of good breeding and health of the bulls. Today's bullriders have the elite training and medical staff, but the bull power is bred into them with bloodlines to make them the best as well as their feeding, exercise, and medical care. There are still good bulls that come by it naturally, same with the cowboys. But it's becoming a hybridized sport. I'll always love watching it though!

Just an FYI the people that criticize roping cattle have no idea why we do it, most of the time it is to doctor the cattle, give them their shots or tend to an injury hopefully before it gets infected, cattle raised on an open 5000 acres ranch just do not come up to you like a dog and let you tend to them. I think there will be more non cowboys in the sport but I think cowboys will always dominate it because few others understand what it takes or just how brutal it is, few non cowboys will be able to take it, I have also seen non cowboys take up the sport and the next thing you know they are buying a ranch and diving in head first into the business.

Keep seeing comments talking bout "yeah he's good but Lane Frost is the best ever" or Ty Murray, or Tuff Hedeman, and don't get me wrong those dudes are all in the discussion but I feel like the people that are saying this just know they've heard those names and don't really know much else about it. To say that Mauney isn't in the argument as one of the best to ever do it is just ridiculous, he's a f'n stud and the fact that he has been doing it at the level he's at for as long as he has just speaks to how good he really is.

While I am from Texas....my passion was car racing, and there are many similar attitudes to be drawn between the 2 sports. Both of them take an ABSOLUTE focus, and a measure of fearlessness, and some luck, and as they say "you cant count on luck....but luck counts! Im now 74 years old and can barely walk because of my activities, and the ONLY thing I can say that makes bullriding "safer"....is that Ive never seen a bull catch on fire!!!!!!

A lot of the Pro Bull Riders got their start way back when they were between 6 and 8 years old with what is called "Mutton Busting: where they lay on the back of a Sheep and hold onto it's fur and then the adults let it go and the clock starts and they try to hold on as long as they can. The slowly move up to Saddle Bronc Ridding, then in Hight School, into Bull Ridding. (A lot of the High Schools in the South and Western States have Rodeo Teams.)

You should do a video on theost feared bull in PBR, Bodacious. Out of 135 people who tried to ride him, 127 got bucked off. When a lot of people heard they drew him they just said nope. When that bull stomps you, it aint no accident, he ment to do it.

There's more to being a great bull rider (Hell, a great cowboy) than the quality of rough stock you swing your leg across or toss a rope at. Lane graduated from Atoka H.S in '83. I graduated in '82. I knew him and Cody......hell, I even 2-stepped a few songs with Kelly at street dances. We rodeo'd before flak jackets, helmets, face masks, and wrist braces. (Not saying they wouldnt have been a good idea). It was just a different time and different breed of cowboy back then. It was more about the people and the sport, than the glitz and glamorous. If you enjoy PBR, good for you. As for me, I'll take a good old fashioned county fair rodeo any day. Maybe I'm a biased old boomer......but I stand by my assertion.
