I am decended from Francis Scott Key. I've visited Fort McHenry and stood the ramparts. The story continues that the morning after the bombing, before the morning mist cleared, the men at the fort lowered the 10'x20' flag that had been nearly obliterated and raised a brand new flag that was 30'x50' who's shear weight bent the flag pole and it was this "magnificent standard" (as the British admiral called it) that greeted my ancestor that morning.

What it says is that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." First Amendment U.S. Constitution. Source; www.archives.gov And no, I do not want the government trying to control my church, any more than I want my church to control the government. But the part of the amendment that I'm referring to is 'prohibiting the free exercise thereof." They have prohibited Christians from praying in school but allow Muslim children to pray the required prayers at the required time. AND NO, I am not saying THEY should be prohibited, just that ALL children should be allowed to pray if they choose to, I definitely do not want them to be FORCED too either. And yes, you are absolutely correct that Congress is the only governmental body designated by the constitution to make law. SOOO, how did you feel about "Roe v. Wade"? I am veteran of the Unites States of America. I served in our US Navy. At the age of 17 years old I joined. Joining the military is like writing a blank check (British cheque) to the USA that may include up to your own life. I signed that check at 17 - the oath I swore then NEVER expires - until I expire. Our nation stands for freedom - and I, even when I disagree and find disgusting what people have to say about one thing or another, I agree that they have the freedom to speak whatever it may be. I personally put my life in harms way to defend their right to do just that. There is one thing that I am the wrong person for however - if someone pulls down the American flag and throws it to the ground. That individual will face fury that they cannot handle. The flag does not deserve the disrespect that an opinion or speech may direct upon it - the flag is for the men and women and yes even children - who gave their lives to make our nation free. What the United States accomplished in 1776 and again in 1812 - which is when the Star Spangled Banner was written - is to STAND - Keep Flying - Resist Tyranny even if death is the result. That DEMANDS honor - and I for one, as a veteran, will not sit idly by as someone, ANYONE, tramples on the flag. I was several different British and New Zealanders watch this video. All of those I watched this evening said the same - we were not taught what this National Anthem meant and what it was derived from, it's history. In the United States today - WE MUST teach our current and future generations about what this National Anthem means. The USA has made many mistakes in the past, is making mistakes presently, and will make mistakes in the future - but our FLAG stands for FREEDOM!

@@sandrastephenson9467 Zero people gave their lives trying to hold up the flag that night. Zero. I find it offensive for the fabrication of a story of people -- especially if there is a version where children supposedly sacrifice themselves (and why would there be children in a military fort in the early 1800s out and about). Offensive.

The narrator was Jack Webb. I saw it for the first time when I was a little girl. I cried then and I cry now when I hear it. The only mistake made in the narrative was that this happened during The War of 1812 and he called us colonies, we were no longer under British rule. The British thought at that point in time they could take us but they underestimated our love of liberty. God Bless all of our military and the military of our allies.

I'm an Army combat veteran and knowing this since I was small (thought not commonly known) was a huge inspiration for why I joined the military and one of many reasons why I love my country. There is no law or even military article that explicitly states you cannot have the flag on the ground - however, it is like an unwritten rule that we all follow due to this very part of our history.

"army combat veteran", I understand the distinction some try and make when they say combat veteran. A veteran is a veteran. FYI veteran of 2 branches and family that fought as far back as WW1. It takes 5 Army soldiers to support one soldier in the field. How long would you last without those 5? Aren't they not patriots? Anyone that raises their right hand and swears an oath to defend the US is just as equal as anyone else. They could have been called up to the field also. My pops served two tours in Vietnam, volunteered, vs voluntold. Same as his dad in WW2. A sailor on a ship, airmen manning a radar post or Coast Guard whatever they call them are no different than a soldier or Marine. Patriots that are the 1% that actually serve. All 100% better than that fat orange coward that avoided Vietnam and wouldn't have last most likely 2 seconds in the jungle.

@@said11 I don’t disagree with you but there is certainly a clear distinction between an individual who has been in combat vs one who never endured that kind of experience. That’s why there are medals and ribbons for distinctions. It’s more succinct to what I’ve endured - not for looking down on any other veteran who hasn’t. Not sure why it’s such a big deal. I never hinted at any other veteran being inferior.

As mentioned in other posts, this was not the American Revolutionary War 19 April 1775 - 3 September 1783 from Great Brittan but the second conflict with Great Brittan - the War of 1812 - 18 June 1812 - 17 February 1815. The incident depicted was a 25 hour bombardment of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore from dawn of 13 September through the morning of the 14th, 1814 and the catalyst for Francis Scott Key writing what became the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner".

I love that the verse ends with that kind of gut-wrenchingly hopeful question. You can almost hear the hopes of the men there carried on it. "Is it still there? Do we still have the country we love, that worked so hard and many died to make?" That sentiment. The country is barely 30 yrs old at this point. Many who fought to make this impossible dream happen are still around. Within the tone of question there's the terror of losing everything combined with the desperate hope of it surviving, perfectly capturing what the men were feeling as they asked if the flag was still there and when they could see through the bombs that indeed it was. It gets me every time.

I have gotten teary eyed every single time I've heard the Star Spangled Banner since I was a child in the 50's & 60's. Now, in my 70's, I don't even try to hold back the tears. Back when I was in my teens, I sang in the choir in my church. We would sing the National anthem on national holidsys. I was always glad that we sang as a group and I didn't have to sing by myself cuz I always cry when I sing it. 😅 It's just so emotional, even after all these years. BTW, a day or two after the 9/11 attacks on America, Queen Elizabeth II had this played by the guards' band at Buckingham Palace as a tribute to America! It was the first time it had been played there EVER! There's a KZbin video that you should watch. You'll love it. ❤ Another video to watch is the Star Spangled Banner sang by high schoolers of Kentucky at a hotel. It's a bunch of kids at a state choir competition. Apparently, when the kids from all over Kentucky are in this hotel for a few days, they gather in the multi-storied lobby on all the floors at 10 or 11 pm and sing this a Cappella. It is stunningly beautiful. The video is on KZbin and should be easy to find. Good reaction. Lovely of you to be moved by our National Anthem. ❤😊
