I am a 73 year old Zimbabwean (formerly a Rhodesian), and so I have experienced colonialism first hand. The British pioneers marched into Zimbabwe in 1890. It was a disease-ridden, war torn, trackless waste with wholesale murder of the Mashona tribes by the Matabele. In 90 years those of British descent turned it into a virtually first world country. We had good roads, railways, schools, communications, power grids (hydro-power from Kariba Dam - the biggest dam in the world, when it was completed), government buildings, hospitals, clinics, honest judicial system, and a police force in the top three in the world. Interestingly there were almost no emigrants. We then faced mandatory sanctions initiated by England a the US, and a civil war initiated and financed by Russia and China. This led to a Marxist government under Gabriel Mugabe, which turned the country from the Breadbasket of Africa to a Basket case in 40 years. Now, under the Marxist Freedom Fighter government, probably a third of the population has fled the country. Form your own conclusions.

It's "free trade" model lifted more people out of poverty in the Empire than countries not colonised by Britain. In Africa despite the myths, there was a nett flow into African counties developing the infrastructure, which is why London, broke after WWII, could not make them independent fast enough in the 1960s. In a recent IMF paper discussing Haiti and the reasons for its collapse, research into poverty was cited where BRITISH COLONISATION was the only outlier (not contributing to a country's problems). French colonisation and adopting socialism on the other hand .... Be PROUD of your British heritage, it was a force for good.

The whole colonization issue or debate should be segmented into time periods and each time period analysed separately. To just jump to the conclusion that colonization was a benefit to the Colonized people is disrespectful to the victim. When Britain initially invested or ploughed back financial resources into the Colonies, was it for the benefit of the indigenous population or it was an endeavor by the UK to give its agents a good standard of living comparable to the UK while serving UK interests in plundering the new found lands. At some point, the UK presided over the largest human trafficking and exploitation, murders, rapes and all kinds of vile acts across all its colonies and more than any other European nation ever did. During that phase of colonization, can we say that colonization was of great benefit to the Colonies and the victims. Many people don't appreciate that if it wasn't for the British a number of tribes in South Africa wouldn't exist today. When she speaks about 'genocide' that is what the Zulu were practicing in Natal as they moved south, wholesale slaughter of tribes effectively wiping the identity off the face of Africa. The British, in their clashes with Shaka's Zulu warriors, effectively stopped that. A women of the Fingo tribe living in the Eastern Cape once said that if they had not stopped them, her tribe, and hence her, would no longer exist. The same happened in New Zealand where maori tribes were constantly fighting each other with cannibalism and slavery a common theme, by signing an Agreement with the British Crown, Treaty of Waitangi, this was stopped and the genocide that was the eradication of the moriori tribe by maori was not repeated. Two small but significant examples of the benefits of English colonialism. It should be noted the the greatest genocides have always been perpetrated by rules on their own people, generally in the name of communism, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao and the Ukranian Holodomour to name a few. Edit:- It is also worth noting that the esteemed economist, Dr Thomas Sowell, said that it cost England more to keep the colonies than what England derived in economic benefits, the huge investments in infrastructure and technlogy transfers were incredible, not to mention that it was the British that stopped the slave trade, an action that nearly bankrupted the country due to the compensation payments that were made along with the military actions with the navy preventing the shipment of slaves.

This woman is a nut. The average Aboriginal lifespan in Australia is 71.9 years for males and 75.6 years for females. That's 8 years less than the average - NOT 8 years less than white people. Australians with lower education don't live as long as Australians with high education, regardless of race and lots of other discrepancies, so it's not as if every other Australian lives to the average lifespan. The leading cause of death for Aboriginals is lung cancer because about 60% smoke, compared to the national average of 15%. She's correct about an aboriginal male being more likely to go to jail than university, but you can paraphrase that to they're more likely to commit a jailable offence than go to University. Less than 50% finish high school despite all kinds of programs to try to keep them in school. The Government has tried all kinds of things to keep them at school and into University. In the end, it is the indivual's responsibility to make the best choice for themselves. Set them back hundreds of years??? How do you do that? They were stoneage.

A different model or implementation would have been better than this one which was fueled by greed and the desire to domineer over other people. A more collaboratory approach would have yielded better results than the Colonization project.

India's net worth is on a par with Britain's today and it looks like they're going to surpass it soon. Modern day India is now a superpower in global terms. @@bosunmate7301 Australians may have been legally 'British Subjects' until then but they haven't considered themselves British since Federation. Our ties with Britain though are evident through our whole system of government, law and education. Long may they remain. The problem with indigenous people asking for reparations for historic wrongdoings is that who should pay. In the case of Australia, our population is so multicultural with around 2 out of 3 Australians being either migrants or children of migrants. A lot of these migrants come from countries other than Britain and many from ex colonies. Why should they, as taxpayers, be liable to pay for the acts of the former British Empire? . Who should they pay it to? There is no one alive that suffered directly from colonisation and in fact what the learned gentleman above said was true, on the whole they are the beneficiaries.

I guess they were supposed to build a country for free. Are they not supposed to benefit? If they didnt step in then the country would be backwards to this day. Its a small price to pay for a country that lacks the necessary stability, finance, and education among other things to have a country come in and steer the ship and enable its citizens to have a future. The reason countries are colonized is because they have to be. If they didnt they would already have the answers to the problems that have continued to hold them back. Its a hard pill to swallow but its true . Most often countries that have been controlled by western nations are usually better of in the end. People need to get over it.
