The reason you put masticha into the water it's because in Greece they used to eat it during hot periods...so because it gets quite liquidy so if you sink it to a cold water it gets harder...therefore its name is "Submarine" because you sink it

Masticha costs somes *hundreds* of euros per kilo, and it's one of the "secret" ingredients in pastry around Europe (and current;y the world) for many centuries. It's produced only on the island of Chios. I've recently read that the production of about 150 tons annually, is not even close to the growing global demand. A unique, delicate and very expensive product.

I have watched similar Greek snack tasting vids and as a Greek myself I can confirm that the lady that sent this box has a great taste and made some absolutely wonderful choices! I just missed some classic almond ION milk chocolate and merenda hazelnut paste, which are adored by 99.99% of people. (Actually if you don't love them, means there is something seriously wrong with you or you are really sick.)
@theohasskills98145 жыл бұрын
What is this supposed to mean. If you don't like sugary or salty foods you will be considered as a sick person. I'm an athlete of waterpolo training 20 hours per week and I don't eat sugar or salt aka junk food
@parists54555 жыл бұрын
@@theohasskills9814 To not like ION milk and almond chocolate and Merenda hazelnut chocolate paste is *almost* like saying you don't like a beautiful sunset or you don't like toddlers and not find them adorable. (Speaking of toddlers...) both this and my last comment were exaggerations, like metaphors, Greek word, we Greeks, first started to speak with those to point out how true one fact is, you know? Ever heard of it while not playing polo (irony: Greek word too). So, they are so undeniably and universally good *to the taste*. Of course we are talking about taste, not how good sugar is for health, everybody knows sugar is very bad when not used in very limited and controlled quantities. The fact that you decide not to consume such products at all in order to be at the top of your health and game, doesn't mean that you wouldn't love one of them if you were to try. (So most probably you are not sick according to my metaphor.) Another example: everybody knows ice cream is bad for health and pizza too, but everybody EVEN YOU loves him some ice cream or pizza if he were to try once in a while. Now if you decide not to consume at all to have a six pack or be at the top of your health or whatever, that is a completely different issue. You would still love some any time, if your taste is functioning well.

Hi Alex and Kate. Anna and I had so much fun watching you try the items we sent. To answer your questions about the Masticha sweet, I read in the comments that it's served with warm water, but honestly I've never had it served that way, only cold water. The water isn't meant to pick up the flavor, it's just that you really need it with something that sweet. I think it's simply a method of presentation at the cafes.

Interesting fact the scientific word for the ability to chew in the English language is masticate. It’s etymology is derived from the Greek word for chewing or grinding teeth! - μαστιχάω The natural chewing gum you tried gets its name from the way it has been used for thousands of years. The mastic tree almost exclusively thrives on the island of Chios and as others have mentioned it is used as a flavour in many sweets and breads throughout the Mediterranean. It can also be used in some savoury dishes. Try a pinch of the natural mastic in a casserole and enjoy the aroma.

When you finish eating it you can drink the water which has a soft sweet taste. It is produced in a greek island which is called "Chio" and you might have heard of Mastiha Chiou. Chio's mastiha is the most popular here in Greece.

Spoon sweets eaten with no bread, this is jam, only by the spoon. They are traditional since the times of Byzantine empire. Sometimes they flavour it with Geranium flower , maybe thats what you found familiar. Masticha ypovrixeio served on an overload long spoon in a cold glass of water. By time it get softer and the water get the taste. You can use it as glaze on your sweets. Its the official treat of Ecumenical Patriarch. Masticha grows only on the Greek island of Chios and makes also a nice spirit called Skinos. Its the original gum.

The "spoon sweets" were what people would traditionally give you when you went for a visit; always served with a glass of water and not always necessarily with coffee. You can also use them as toppings for icecream or Greek yoghurt. Greek yoghurt is also really good with honey. Kate, you were right; the other gum was rose.

The person had great taste in snacks and the contents of the box are probally close to 100 bucks if not more. I know bc I get the same exact stuff when I feel the need. I feel that the croissants with the pudding inside was missing from this list of snacks and loukoumia and pastilli.

we have a joke about caprice, which was actually used of the company as an advertisement, that because in every greek home we keep the container to put in other stuff, if you actually find caprice in the box its your lucky day😂

Oh my God! My grandma always used to serve me this sweet on spoon in a glass of really cold water. It was always vanilla though because I didn't like the masticha flavour back then. It is called "ypovrichio" in Greek which literally means submarine.

For context, the Caprice tube wafers are notoriously difficult to remove from the packet when you first open it because they are so closely packed together. There are loads of Greeks shocked that you managed to pull one out so easily and quickly.

Hey Kate and Alex! I was pleasantly surprised to see you got a box from a young lady that lives in Queens, NY. I was born and raised in Queens and my brothers still work at a hospital near a Greek and Eastern European neighborhood in Astoria. It’s where I would pick up Croatian snacks when I lived in NY. I sadly never took advantage of trying all the other countries snacks much so never had any of these. I loved this video! I didn’t know anise and licorice was favored in the Greek culture. I do love anisette liquor and cookies very much as well as licorice candy. Thanks for this video and I can’t wait til the next one.

I love the Ouzo candies but they are really hard to find here, seem to be an after dinner treat at the cash out of some restaurants mostly. There is a Greek bakery store in town that has big bags of them but I rarely get there, it’s off the beaten track for me. They are often combined with some in red wrappers that are either cinnamon or pomegranate ones. Yum

I can so see them being as an after-dinner treat! Ah no way! At least you can get them if you are really craving them ☺️ Mmm pomegranate ones!! Yum

25:00 HELLO FROM CHIOS ISLAND THE ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD WE WORK HARD TO CREATE MASTIHA, A PRODUCT THAT ONLY EXIST IN SOUTH CHIOS
Loved your video, as for the mastic the reason it's considered unique is that it only can be harvested from the mastic trees on the norther part of the Island of chios (attempts to plant the tree anywhere else only yielded a tasteless sap when they tried harvesting it).

22:30 we call it submarine (ipovrichio). It is very old. The main flavors are masticha, pistachio and rose. You take a teaspoon and dip it cold water. You take a bite, you drink a sip of water. You can also have it beside a Greek coffee
