British, Polish and American Forces Conduct Complex Wet Gap Crossing

British troops from 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron Royal Engineers and U.S.Army soldiers from the 43rd Multi-Role Bridge Company took part in constructing a series of bridges and ferry rafts during a large and complex Wet Gap Crossing along the River Drawa that runs through the Land Forces Training Center, Drawsko, Poland.
The wet gap crossing was part of Immediate Response 24, a sub exercise of NATO's Steadfast Defender 2024, designed to ensure Polish, British and American vehicles and equipment are able to cross the river quickly and safely.
The bridges were then crossed by hundreds of vehicles including British Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks and Polish M1A1 FEP Abrams Main Battle Tanks.

We did this in the 1970 with the Mobile Assault Bridge units of the 10th Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Div in Wurzburg. They had to deploy for every Rhine and Mosel crossing for the NATO "dog and pony" shows. The old MAB units were hard to move through the narrow streets of the small towns which was perhaps the most worrisome part of bridging a river because of the aluminum skin. The folding float sections actually look like the Soviet bridging units of our day so I guess the good idea got copied. Still nothing beats the technology of the British Bailey Bridge. My uncle used those all over France after landing at Normandy all the way to Antwerp getting the railroad logistics to Patton.

Smartphones, selfies, soldiers posing for photos during the crossing. What are the exercises, where should the balls be heard, pomegranate explosions, constant firing? It looks like fun that has nothing to do with real warfare and preparations for them.
