British Rail Scotrail 93-Ayr, Stirling, Blair Atholl, Edinburgh Class 08, 37, InterCity 125, 56, 305

It's July 1993 and we are in Scotland. We see some freight action at Newton-on-Ayr with classes 08 & 56 before some loco hauled Scotrail Express action with class 37s at Stirling, Blair Atholl & Edinburgh. At Edinburgh we also see a Valenta powered Inter-City 126 HST head south while an ex Network SouthEast Tilbury line class 305 EMU arrives on the North Berwick service. Good shot of the bullnose locomotive with the passenger cars in tow. Enjoyed the XPT coming out of one tunnel and entering another. A couple of place names shared with Sydney. Blair Athol is a suburb in the south west and Waverley is near Bondi Beach.

In Britain, the XPT is known as the HST (high speed train), marketed as InterCity 125. But you are right, most Australian states have great naming connections with the British Isles, NSW being most obvious, but most Australian towns are named either for aboriginal or British Isles heritage.

@@thomasburke2683 just gagging. The XPT and HST are completely incompatible with each other despite the former being based on the latter. The XPT continues to dazzle despite being around for 40 years now. Some Sydney places are named after American locales , e.g. Beverley Hills, Newport Beach, Palm Beach, Brooklyn and Long Island. One is from Swizerland -Lugarno and another after a French explorer -LaPerouse. One Brazillian -Copacabana! An Italian named suburb is Como.

I miss the 37's on regular passenger trains. Though a few years ago I managed to get one of the 68's on the Fife commuter trains. It sounded awesome in the Haymarket tunnels.

I missed the Fife communters sadly although have done all thsoe with Chiltern (inc the 2 blue ones) and am working my way through the TPE ones!
