Hello, I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to rural NC as an adult. My husband and I make maybe half what my sibling and their spouse make who are still in LA. We have a much bigger house and land, more savings, more cars, and half the stress. It all depends on what you want out of life. I want space, tranquility, and quiet! Great video guys.

Love the culture, the history. Close to Washington DC and all that offers yet not so close that we don't still have wide open spaces and farmland. Love the diversity of people, culture. religions. From a weather perspective ,the east coast is heavily influenced by the Gulf Stream running north from the tropics bringing hot moist water and air ,while the west coast has the Japanese current bringing cold water and air down from the Arctic .
@Melissa-wx4lu Жыл бұрын
Weather is very much influenced by the ocean temps. Warm tropical water moves up almost the East coast, the Gulf states and areas like North and South Carolina can have sweltering tropical summers and mild winters. Artic cold water moves down along the West coast. with tempers the climate in California. The Massive mountain ranges in the West block much of the moisture which is why it's basically desert on the other side of the mountain ranges. In the center, the warm air from the south crashes into the cold air from the west and boom....tornados.
@ChasYoshi5 ай бұрын
The Carolinas are much more diverse than just sweltering summers. Western NC, home of the highest mountain east of the Mississippi, actually has ski resorts. Western SC, or the Upstate, also experiences snow and ice, occasionally over 12 inches at a time. The Lowcountry of SC, where Charleston is located, is sweltering in the summer and very rarely has temperatures below freezing. The coast of NC is a little less humid and hot, but relatively mild. Texas is similar, with Houston having the same climate as Charleston, while the Panhandle and Red River areas in the north regularly see snow in winter.

I was born and raised in Canada on the West Coast but married an American & relocated to the USA. My husband was from Maryland so we lived there for about a year and then left (I took him with me) and relocated to Washington State because I realised I was a Pacific NorthWest (PNW) person from "Start to Finish". Also, I realised I NEEDED to live with 100 miles of the Canadian border as all my family lives in Canada and I need to be able to drive there within a couple hours to visit whenever I want. Plus, the PNW is so beautiful, has such a diverse environment and is so progressive compared to the rest of the USA this is the only place in the world I would live. ❤❤❤ Canada, PNW, Washington State & your channel. I'm very familiar with economic indicators. Basically live where you like. Depending on your job, you may do well in the North East. But unless you make good money may places could be 'unlivable'. Many place not on the extreme ends of the scale, you can do alright. There are normally good places to live & earn a good wage in any state. A little like working in London but commuting to Luton to live.

Ocean currents also play a role. Just think of how far north most of Europe is relative to North America yet their weather is much milder than North American cities at similar latitudes; heck even most northern US cities at more southerly latitudes have colder weather than Britain. That’s all due to ocean currents. As far as the West Coast remaining warmer in the winter that’s due to westerly wind flows bringing relatively warm air from the ocean onto the land. The East Coast doesn’t have that benefit because primarily westerly winds are bringing cold air from over the land. In the summer this has the reverse effect since the oceans are relatively cooler than the land cooler air from the ocean flows onto the West Coast keeping it cooler while warmer from the land flows onto the East Coast making it warmer.
@pjschmid2251 Жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind when you’re looking at those GDP numbers for the West Coast versus the East Coast think of how much more densely populated those East Coast states are. That means the West Coast states have large sections of them that are rural and in those areas, because there aren’t a large cities, the wages are lower. When you average that over the whole state it makes the whole state look lower but if you were to look at just merely the urban portions of those states the numbers would be higher.

MOUNTAINS - the US 2 ranges run north south - most mountains run east west. The mountains dominate the weather and explain the different climes at the same latitude. And places with high tourism hve lower wages because of the nature of the hospitality trade.

Love your vids, guys. The Pacific NW is very mild compared to similar east coast latitudes. Ocean currents help make the PNW mild up to and beyond British Columbia. Think of the climate of the PNW as the UK. Very similar except as you go south, the summers get much warmer in Oregon but the climate is very similar to UK. Vancouver BC, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco would seem very familiar to you.....

South more populated w/ Black Americans as result of concentration from plantation labor during slavery. As northern cities industrialized there was “great migration” for jobs in the factories. Also to the west for land. A lil explanation of why you see some of the ethnic distribution you do on the coasts. Also fleeing the “Jim crow” south.

I love it when Brits react to US videos-I learn so much about my own country! I live in North Carolina (becoming a purple state for politics) and there are not too many other places I would want to live. I have the beach just a few hours away to the east and the mountains a few hours to the west. Our cost of living index changes widely across the state. I live 150 miles east of my mother and their grocery prices average fifty cents to one dollar higher per item yet they are one of the poorest counties in the state. As far as the environmental differences on the west coast (left coast), I seem to have read that Scotland has something similar. I understand that it is bitter cold in some areas but there are palm trees in another area.

The climate between the west and east coast is different because the weather systems move from west to east, due to the earth's rotation. So the west coast gets its weather from off the Pacific. In the east the weather will be more continental than maritime, but don't forget, there is the gulf stream running up the southern part, which is mild. Off the northern coast the cold Labrador current flows down from Greenland. The westward expansion of the states in the 19th c is a fascinating story. Apart from the clashes with the native Americans, there was constant friction between the northern free states and the southern slave holding states. The southern states grew more and more concerned that they would lose the balance of power in Congress as new states joined, and started sending congressmen to Washington. There were several attempts at compromise, but with the introduction of Kansas and Nebraska in the 1850s actual fighting broke out which was a significant factor in the civil war, in the following decade. Other difference's are due to trade links. The east coast was always connected back to Europe, while in the west there were stronger links across the Pacific to Asia. Fascinating video.enjoyed it.

The east coast is not more progressive than the west coast. The guy who makes those videos gets it right sometimes but this time he is wrong. Then he says California is progressive but Oregon might be the most progressive in the country. WA state was first (along with Colorado, they voted in the same year) to decriminalize weed, and WA state has since decriminalized drug possession as long as it is under a certain amount. They were also first (or second to Iowa I can't remember) to allow same sex marriages.

Income can be a deceiving thing because it has more to do with cost of living in those areas than anything. For example I live in Nashville Tennessee we have much lower household income than New York City or California or Baltimore or DC but it costs a whole lot less to live in Tennessee.. Tennessee has no state income tax for example so that makes up some of the difference. New York State and California have much higher taxation levels. Also Tennessee gives incentives to companies to come here and move their headquarters here and the companies in turn pay better wages than most other jobs in the area so there are lots of opportunities for employment here Houses cost so much less here too. What you can get for $500,000 in Tennessee, a really nice home, would cost you three times that much to get the same house in New York or California. I'll take living inland in the south and be satisfied with being able to drive to the Florida or North Carolina coast when I want to vacation at the beach or just drive East about 4 hours and I'm in the Great Smoky mountains..

This East v West Coast was very interesting. 👍👍 However, It felt like some of the numbers were 'too raw', ie. it was left to the viewer to try to combine income and cost of living. It was unclear to me if all income taxes (eg. federal and state) were subtracted from income. Also were other taxes (purchase, housing, etc) added to cost of living? I don't understand if health insurance was fully included, considering it a necessity, or only a proportion because 10s of millions have no health insurance. Military recruitment could have _also_ been shown adjusted, eg. military personnel/1,000 of state population, to make them easier to compare in relative numbers, too. One thing I find very interesting are the "Political Party by State" maps. Do you know how the American "Electoral College" works? A presidential candidate can win "the popular vote" (ie have more votes cast by citizens), but still lose the election because of the "Electoral College". This might be interesting _The Electoral College, explained_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5vEp6aDl6iUprs (8min 8sec) This is much shorter, good, but misses some of the important history: _US election: What is the electoral college and how does it work?_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3annod6eLCbjKc (3min 42sec) This reaction video is a surprising extra treat after your "Cocktails and New Year" live stream! 🎉🍸🍻 Best Wishes for a Great New Year. ☮ G-Man 😎

@@BritPopsReact Yes the "little grey cells" were off the couch touching flagella. 🛋🥔 It was information-dense, like _"drinking from a fire hose"._ I like that, so I might watch the original to see if there were useful bits of info in the on-screen text or description. I'm probably too ready to criticise the video. Gathering and comparing the statistics for the 4 nations of the UK (and stats are often England and Wales combined, so only 3) is likely much easier than for 48 US states (no Alaska or Hawaii). I feel I should get a suitable SVG of the US map showing states (and major cities). Then try to do my own infographics. I suspect it'd be humbling. The animation of the changing status of areas of land (where BP1 _might_ have misread dates) was fascinating. It was too small to see if they labelled events like the Louisiana purchase. AFAICT, it didn't mark the lands which were protected from settlement by treatise between the British and the First Nations (original native people). Some claim migrating West and occupying First Nations land (which was otherwise protected by treaty with the British), was a significant motivation for the "War of Independence". I don't know enough though. *WELL DONE!* You got the live stream released. ✅👍👍👏 It'll be nice to see the part I missed. *Best Wishes to You and Yours for a Happy, Healthy, and Peaceful New Year.* ☮ To plug it again, If you're not familiar with it, the "Electoral College" history is fascinating. I _thought_ I understood the "Electoral College"; several Americans explained it at various times. So, I understood how it works now, with all of its issues. However, I hadn't understood how the distribution of electors to states had been calculated in its early years, or the disproportionate influence the "Electoral College" can give. _The Electoral College, explained_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5vEp6aDl6iUprs seems very good. It's only 7min 53sec then a "thank you to our sponsor". A big caveat is it seems to divide people, with Democrats strongly in favour of changing it. A related topic is Gerrymandering.

I don't know how old this video is and it makes a difference. There is currently an exodus from the west coast states due to the progressive governors. California has a 70 million tax swing in the last year. Now they have a 23 million deficit. Yes its the rich who are leaving because the large tax increases. There are 14 counties in Oregon that want to leave Oregon and form New Idaho or join the existing Idaho. The eastern side of Oregon is mostly farmland and conservative people. The big cities in Oregon have the largest populations and vote progressive, thus overriding the conservative vote. Washington is mostly the same as Oregon. All the large cities on both coasts are having record levels of crime. About climate - The west coast has an ocean current the comes from Hawaii and tends to keep the temperatures milder then the east cost. I believe its called the Pineapple Express. Also off of Mexico is an ocean area the affects the climate. I'm not that knowledgeable on this subject. Oregon has every type of geography. The southeast is desert with little vegetation. The northwest is all fir trees where I live. They get logged about every 40 years. Side note: Every year there is a relay foot race from Mt. Hood to the town of Seaside on the Oregon coast. Each entry is made up of a team of people who change about every 5 miles or less. That's my thumbnail.

California has a budget surplus which we’ve had since we booted Republican governors. Sadly, California subsidizes the Republican welfare states who refuse to tax their own citizens and takes welfare payments from the federal government that is paid for by California and New York.
@leovaldez5419 Жыл бұрын
Your take is pretty bias and I’m fro, California. There are more California born new rich people than leaving and that is a fact you omitted. There is much more than that. Both progressive and conservative states haste pros and cons. If you find out which state provides more financial support to the federal government than it takes it is progressive states also. In other words the conservative ed states take more form the government than they provide in other words mooch of other states.

And FYI. California has the sixth largest economy IN THE WORLD. Remember. Conservative states would go under without liberal states. Gee. Maybe TAKING CARE of our citizens means more productivity? Who would’ve thought? Please keep in mind. Those states you’re denigrating actually SUPPORT THE REST OF THE STATES. Including my beloved state of NEW YORK. Yep. We pay taxes. Happily. So my bestie can have more services and money from SNAP, SSI, MEDICAID, Office for the Aging…New York State has the best MEDICAID services in the US, apart from California. (We’re tied with CA!) If she can get medical care, care for her permanent disability, help with grocery costs, rental costs…We’re 100% onboard. It means I worry about her LESS. And New York has more services for the elderly than anywhere else. It LITERALLY saved my Dad’s life when insulin became so expensive. We have EPIC. ELDERLY PRESCRIPTION INSURANCE COVERAGE. My folks were on a fixed-income of pensions, IRAs, and Social Security. Instead of insulin costing hundreds per month, they paid $40/month. It meant they could eat. So, as for me and my family, we’re staying in NY!

@Leo Valdez You're counting farm subsidies in that "aid". You know, the money the government pays farmers for not letting them grow and sell as much as they want so that the fed can control food prices.
