Pat McAfee is a national treasure. He wasn't just a random kicker either, he was voted all-decade punter of the 2010s and was the best at it when he played. He also works part-time for WWE as a commentator, even wrestled a couple matches just to say he did it. Should check out his "Pat talks about how Troy Polamalu ruined his life" video, it's a very funny story about when he played football.

I get that Pat may have done the matches "just to say he did it", but Pat performed insanely well in those matches for someone that had never been trained for it. His match with Austin Theory at WrestleMania was great. Especially his top rope spot where Austin pushed him off and he did the backflip to land on his feet only to immediately jump up to the top of the turnbuckle from the mat and do a superplex... that's top notch stuff done by essentially an amateur.

Pat was a punter for the Indianapolis Colts (and teammate of Peyton) and became a fan favorite due to his great punting, his in-game theatrics (big hits on kick returns, fake punts, celebrations, etc.) and his personality that you see here. He went to college at West Virginia. You should definitely watch some of his NFL highlights.

The reason this gatherings are so large is because it's a weekly show that highlights the biggest match-up of the week. They go all over the country and never are never in the same place back to back weeks, or if they do, it's extremely rare. It's been going on every season for 30+ years. It's a huge deal, and they set up at the college where rhe game is being played, so you have tens of thousands of students, plus tens of thousands just going to the game, and people start showing up the day before and will be there all the way through until the the game starts. Then whoever isn't going stays there to party, and then if the home team wins, things really get wild 😂

I'd also add that with US sports culture fans, i think, are much more open to the fun fan aspect, the salesmenship of the sport, part of the game. They like a character. Where as often I hear British fans of the EPL sort of don't like the big personalities like a Micah Richards on tv, don't always go in for the non-serious shoulder programming. Which i do think is interesting because they also seem to be there for the tabloid aspect of the game as well.

College GameDay is an American fixture. The show is broadcast on location, generally at the site of what is anticipated to be the highest profile game of the weekend. Every so often, perhaps once per year, they will broadcast from the location of a lower division team or less prestigious team. Generally, they are the schools which the average fan doesn't follow or has little interest in, yet have passionate fan bases within their own little ecosystem. They like to focus on schools with long-standing rivalries which are all important to local interest, but escape national attention. Examples: Lehigh vs Lafayette Harvard vs Yale North Dakota State vs North Dakota Montana State vs Montana Saint John's vs Saint Thomas These are the equivalent of local National League derbies in English football. The players will likely never be household names. Pundits don't care much about them. The betting public and fans who only follow regular premiership giants dismiss their importance. But these little games are everything to the fans and players of these teams. They provide the romance of sport which makes sport worth watching.

Especially if they are selling alcohol lol. And with college sports students just want to be on tv too.
