As someone who lives in Asheville, NC this video did not show the worst. The Asheville portion was only an area called Biltmore Village, but the towns is Swannanoa and Barnardsville and Chimney Rock were the hardest hit. The rivers severely overflowed but no dam in NC broke, there was just rumors. Chimney Rock was swept away by flood waters and almost the entire town was flattened. Having personally driven through some of the damage areas it is amazing how things are. Because we are mountains, many people are only accessible via helicopter right now with their roads washed away. If you want to know more I encourage you to look up those towns I listed above and see the damage

I live in one of the worst hit areas of North Carolina. On day 10 without electricity, water, phone or cell phone or internet. I am lucky we still have a home. I am staying at my daughters at night since she has electricity so I can use my life saving CPAP breathing machine. My husband and dog are still home tuffing it out. My sister lives on the coast of Florida and her house flooded. She is now in hospital for a severely infected food and on IV antibiotics. Another Hurricane is headed straight for her and will hit in about 3 days. I have never seen so much destruction in my life. The mountains in North Carolina have no way to prepare or even expected this to happen. It is like telling Florida to prepare for a snow blizzard. Please pray for all of us in the states that were hit. Pray for everyone who has lost their homes, businesses and family members.

Not to mention much of these places in NC and SC even in Tennessee are mountainous areas and extremely hard to reach when every road has been washed away or bridge etc. wiped out. People complaining the government isn't doing enough, I mean I get the frustration how upsetting this all is (we went through it with Wilma in 2005 and Andrew back in 92 I think it was, my memory is a bit bad these days) but this is a massive disaster and many of these places barely had any warning or preparation for this. Florida, as much as I can't stand DeSantis or the state government, plans this stuff ahead of time (and we've been doing it for over 25 years now) where we keep important supplies and vehicles etc. in safe places for after the storm passes for usage then. These states, I mean I'm sure some places might do that, but I don't think many.

We've been watching the coverage on TV. My wife's niece and her husband are in N.C. and are without electricity or water, but are able to drive out to get supplies. The area of N.C. that got hit was inland between mountains. One mountain was to the East and the other to the West. The torrential rain went between the mountains and all the water that landed on the mountains was funneled into the valley between them causing catastrophic flooding wiping out trees and houses in its path. It was kind of like a lahar that happens in a volcanic eruption. The main problem was that most roads were also wiped out leaving those who needed help stranded with no way in or out.

I think Helene became a rare brown ocean hurricane as it lasted much longer than normal. It should not have gone north as Tennessee but it did. Brown ocean is a term used to describe a hurricane that feeds off water from land and lasts longer than usual.
@LordLOC
@LordLOC 5 сағат бұрын
Helene didn't really last longer than usual, nor did it strengthen over land due to the brown ocean effect (that is extremely rare indeed). However, because areas hit by Helene had a large rainstorm right before Helene hit, certainly added to the flooding situation and made things so much worse in the mountains especially. Don't forget, the sheer size of Helene was unusual itself, I mean the wind field was massive, and the precipitation field was incredibly large. Plus, once it made landfall as with most hurricanes, the wind field expands even more as it starts to spin down as it tries to compensate for the loss of the energy source of the open ocean.

This storm affected 6 states. In total over 80,000 square miles. About the size of great Britain. The inland areas in the mountains are about 500 miles from Florida and haven't seen a storm like this in over 100 years. In places like North Carolina there are entire towns where power substations are completely destroyed, water treatment plants are gone, bridges swept away, roads and the water and sewer pipes under them are gone... It will take years, even decades, for some of these towns to recover. The mud and sand you're seeing in North Carolina is from the local rivers that flooded.

The hurricane even reached Ohio, although we had very little damage here. I was without power for about 24 hours. Just today, I picked up two dogs from my local shelter who were evacuated from North Carolina. Thankfully, their owner is known and OK, but they lost everything. I will be fostering the dogs until the family gets back on their feet and into a home. The adoptable animals in many of the shelters in storm ravaged areas have been moved elsewhere for placement. This is to create room for those owned pets who lost their home. In the worst areas, some of these pets are being sent elsewhere for fostering. Many emergency shelters don't take pets. I am so glad I can help this family out. I just sent them pictures of their dogs cuddling on my sofa. I hope the pictures will give them hope that their future will be OK. This hurricane will end up being the worst since Katrina, which hit New Orleans almost 20 years ago -- and possibly worse. There are still communities that have not been rebuilt from Katrina.

James and Millie, I love you guys! Your videos are fun and bring a light to the days of all of us that get to watch them. Here is some info that maybe you don't know about Hurricane Helene. The damage you were looking at from Florida was primarily coastal Florida...caused by high winds and resulting sea surges...or giant waves crashing through over and over again. But further north...Western North Carolina/Eastern Tennessee in some areas as a lingering result of the hurricane hitting land along the coast to the south, a HUGE multi-state-long storm system opened up and unleashed hell on the land below. In most areas, 10+ inches or 25+ cm of rain fell overnight...and in Ashville...Chimney Rock...and Lake Lure NC, 30 inches, or 75cm of rain fell overnight. On flat land, that would result in terrible flash flooding. But, Western NC/Eastern TN is in Appalachia...or part of the Appalachian Mountains which are filled with beautiful crystal-clear rivers and streams...resulting in raging flooded streams which Surge into the Rivers and they had water running through at over 30mph and some 12-15' above flood stage. it swept millions of trees and thousands of homes, farms, shops and buildings into the river as well as causing hundreds of horrific mudslides and landslides. These have brought millions of tons of sediment, dirt, silt, mud and Giant boulders twice the size of vehicles coursing down the raging rivers. Behold the power of millions of gallons of rushing water. You saw Lake Lure with the hundreds and thousands of tree trunks and broken boats filled into it. The water is still there, but the debris is reportedly some 15 feet thick atop the water. FEMA...the gvt agency that usually responds to hurricanes has yet to do anything but show up and "study" The death toll could end up being Far worse that Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans about 20 yrs ago...and possibly worse than 9-11. Sadly, the main-stream media here in the states isn't really reporting much either. The weather channel...and some smaller networks are doing what they can to get the word out to try to get assistance to the hundreds of thousands that have no power water or food... but people that are Helicoptering in supplies or trying to rescue people are being threatened with arrest if they continue..it's beyond a disaster in Every conceivable aspect. May God be with those poor souls that are desperately clinging to keep hope of being rescued and to those that have been but whose lives are forever changed by this tragedy. This goes way beyond politics...this is about our neighbors in trouble...we need SOMEONE to get stuff done and go find them and either save.....or at least recover them so their families may start that awful process of grief.....

That footage of Lake Lure was all of the debris from the surrounding areas floating on the top of the lake. Western NC probably got the worst of the damage. This is historic flooding. The last time they had this kind of flooding was in 1916 & this was worse than that. The last time it was this bad was the late 1700's! No one was prepared for this. In FL, we have recovery teams & emergency systems set in place ready to go when there's a storm. No living people in this part of NC have seen this. Brevard NC here (about 45 minute drive south of Asheville, one of the hardest hit regions in NC). We just got power back tonight (and still isn't everyone, just my neighborhood. My sister's neighborhood had the bridge into the community wash away and they might not have power for a month until they get the bridge repaired). But Asheville and especially Chimney Rock....Chimney rock is pretty much gone now :( But the outpouring of help I've seen this past week and just neighbors helping neighbors has been truly inspiring. Churches and other groups organizing water and supply distribution centers, providing hot meals and shelter for people who lost their homes...heck a team locally is taking teams of mules to deliver supplies and rescue people in places vehicles can't get to yet. The remnants of hurricanes/tropical storms coming through the mountains isn't new, but normally we just get some rain and wind and it blows through quickly. This was just an extremely unlucky, once in a thousand years sequence of events and conditions that made it so devastating. 1) We'd already had a week of heavy rain before the system even got here. In my area we'd gotten about 11 inches of rain so the ground and rivers were already full. 2) There was a low pressure system to the west and that caused Helene to stall over western NC and eastern TN when it 'did' get here, that caused an additional 20-30 inches (or more in some places) to rain to fall onto us 3) Our unique geography basically caused the mountains to channel all of that floodwater down into the river valleys, which literally flooded and washed houses away. And the floods caused landslides and roads to collapse. 4) Add to that the ground was so soft from all of the rain that the wind brought down tons of trees which destroyed power lines and substations.

The areas in North Carolina (and other states) that dealt with the worst are in the mountains. Before the hurricane came through, those areas received a lot of rain. Due to that, the ground really couldn’t hold anymore water when the hurricane came through, leading to the devastating flooding that literally wiped away whole towns.

I'm from Western North Carolina, and it wasn't, necessarily, that they didn't have the infrastructure to deal with it. It is the fact that hurricanes typically don't come that far inland. The mountains of Western North Carolina/Tennessee (the southern Appalachians) typically block or hamper these types of storms from having much of an impact. Plus, this storm was gigantic - a category 4 on impact, over 800 miles wide and winds of 140+ mph. Pray for all of these people!!
@pebblehilllane
@pebblehilllane 7 сағат бұрын
One key factor in the flooding in the mountains of North Carolina is prior to the then tropical storm hitting there had been considerable rains. Some rivers that would normally only be a foot or two deep in many places were already up to 9 feet above normal level. Add to that the massive amount of rain Helene brought and massive walls of water, rock, boulders, trees and more hit houses and businesses like a massive liquid battering ram knocking down much in it's path, damaging more and washing out roadways. Earlier I saw a video of a woman who lives in one of the hardest hit areas. The video showed where three houses had been. Three concrete block houses were knock off their foundations into the raging river, spun around, collided and at least one broke apart. While watching that the woman saw one of her friends, a man she knows, on one of the houses being taken downriver. That was before the worst of the water hit ... and so far search and rescue have not found him. The woman is, or was, an emergency manager for the small mountain town. She said, as of today, they haven't seen a single person from FEMA. Roads have been reopened and a lot of search and rescue and search and recovery has taken place ... and it's all been done by the locals. Farmers and people with heavy equipment went right to work as did everyone with both a chain saw and gasoline and chain oil. While standing by the river the woman said she thought she saw some clothes drifting in the current. It was six bodies. She said the smell of death is everywhere. Bodies are trapped in debris and under dirt and silt and up in trees. Some are partial bodies because the deceased were torn apart just as their homes were torn apart. They expect to be finding bodies into the New Year and that some missing may never be found.

Helene came in as a class 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph. The damage spans 5 states. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. North Carolina received massive amounts of rain. Busick in Yancey County N.C. had the most recorded rain in that period of time at 30.78 inches Swannanoa: 13.21 inches. In the eastern part of North Carolinia 3 dams were over topped and had erosion damage and were in danger of total collapse, by gods grace they held. The Lake Lure dam, Nolichucky dam, and Walters dam were damaged due to water literally spilling over the top of the dams. Mass evacuations were declared but we're severely hampered by historic flooding, waters as high as 24.67 ft left water marks on buildings in Ashville N.C. In Newport, N.C, USGS field crews were able to measure high-water marks left behind by flood waters and determined that the Pigeon River reached a provisional peak water level of 29.72 feet. The previous record on this river was 21.40 feet set in 1902. Entire towns are gone totally swept away as were roads, railroad tracks, bridges and buildings. As of Sunday evening, more than a week after the storm, the highway department’s travel alert page, drivenc.gov, listed more than 700 roads fully or partially closed by the remnants of Hurricane Helene, up from about 400 on Tuesday. The landslides, washouts and missing bridges are so numerous and many in such hard-to-reach places that the department is still cataloging them in North Carolina. Private helicopters and small planes are bringing in supplies as are the National guard. In the rugged mountain areas pack mules and pack ponies are bring food water and medicines into hard hit areas. 4 wheelers and side by sides are moving supplies into areas. The damage is so extensive that it can be seen from the international space station and by satellite. Many describe the damage as apocalyptic and biblical.

It hit in the mountains. Way up in the mountains far from the coast. Just impossible to have been prepared for this storm. It also wiped out infrastructure, power poles and towns. Its incredible. Lake Lure was a very rich area and a very beautiful lake. All that debris is in the lake. I just don't know how they will clean all that up. It's overwhelming just seeing it. I feel for the people who lost everything!

I picked last Thursday to visit my sister who lives near Charlotte N.C., though I booked the trip months ago. The flight into Charlotte felt more like a roller coaster ride than an airplane flight, and the landing was very rough. That night, the storm kept me awake, and the next day after the rain had ended, we drove around to see the widespread damage and flooding that took place as a result of the storm. Just my luck to visit a city the same time it gets hit by a hurricane.

Even when the water drains, the sewage has backed up into the water. Things have died in the water and rotted. Even when the water drains away, the houses are wet with poo and death filled waters. When it drains, all those yuckies are left to rot and mold. Houses fill with mold. Cars that were submerged and wet mold with poopy yucky water damage. The after effects last so long. Katrina cars were "salvaged" cleaned and sold across the country to just have them rot and break down later. The devastation from these storms is horrible.

Here in the Atlanta area, we set a 48hr rainfall record of 11.12 inches (1/3 a meter for the rest of the world). It broke a record set in 1886. And that was getting MISSED (by about 40 miles) by the center of the storm. What happened in these areas in NC/TN was a direct hit, focused and amplified by the mountainous terrain. Anywhere there was a creek, stream, or river - everything nearby is just *gone*.

The mountains were affected so badly because a day or so prior to Helene, historic rains of approximately 12 inches saturated the ground so that when Helene hit the next day there was no where for the water to go but down the mountains. Additionally Helene sat and churned over the mountains. Thanks.!

I'm a South Carolinian who has been living temporarily with his parents in eastern Tennessee since last year, and even though we were fortunate to only lose power for about 6 hours, there are still some parts of eastern TN and western NC that still don't have power or water. (Some homes, roads, bridges, and even some towns were destroyed by the storm.) Unfortunately, there was no way of knowing that the storm was going to be this bad nor was there much that could have been done to prepare for it. Most of the time, by the time most hurricanes get this far inland, the winds have died down significantly, leaving us with just a bunch of rain and a gentle breeze. However, since Helene was a fast-moving Category 4 storm, traveling at about 45 MPH on average, the winds were still at tropical storm speeds by the time it reached the Appalachian Mountains. To make matters worse, we received about 3-5 inches of rainfall over the three days preceding Helene's arrival. With the ground being saturated with water, there was nowhere for the rain from the hurricane to go; hence, the unprecedented flooding and landslides. Please pray not only for those of us inland but also for Florida, which is in the path of ANOTHER strong storm, Hurricane Milton.

The devastation peaked in North Carolina, but it reached much farther north into parts of Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Some folks I know in Virginia and West Virginia are just getting their electricity back after more than a week. It was a huge hurricane and even did a great deal of damage after downgraded to a tropical storm.

In Virginia, what you are seeing is a tornado that spawned in the hurricane. This storm spawned many dangerous tornadoes. This storm was incredibly devastating. I live north of it in southern Ohio, and we still got the outer bands wind shear. For us it was nothing more than a heavy storm, but those south of us were hit far more severe as you can see. Prayers for all who are still suffering, and for those who have lost. Great reaction, thank you for sharing.

James you are correct Augusta is home of The Masters golf tournament. If you guys ever had plans on visiting Florida, Georgia or North Carolina please still do come and visit as all 3 states are beautiful and you would love it here. One thing that made this so much worse was that we had a storm days before the hurricane made landfall so flooding had occurred prior to Helene hitting. Especially in NC. I live in Georgia and some areas were hit hard but nothing compared to North Carolina. It took several days even for us to realize the amount of damage and loss of life. Seeing the videos and hearing the stories on social media has been incredibly heartbreaking. Prayers to all those suffering through this. 🙏

I am getting to retire soon and I was looking at buying a small travel trailer in a couple of years to tow it out to Walt Disney World. I had been tentaively planning a route which would have closely followed the coastline of the Florida Pan Handle passing through many of these small towns that are now destroyed. I am shocked by the devastation, I recognized some of the beautiful neighborhoods from Google Earth, which are now gone. It is very sad. NOAA had predicted a 20 foot high storm surge when Helene made landfal, as you can see, 20 feet is pretty much the top of the roof in some of these areas.

My partner left this morning to assist in Asheville with the FedEx operations. You don't realize how many people need to be assembled and the amount of logistics that must take place in order to recover from a disaster of this scope. It's going to be a long road, but they will recover. I live in the direct path of the last three hurricanes, which turned just enough to spare me each time. I feel guilty being left unscathed when 30 miles down the road they have been hit 3 times in within one year.
