The Land Where Women Rule: Inside China's Last Matriarchy

China's one-child policy led to millions of female infanticides-except in a lush valley known as the “Land Where Women Rule.” Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Lugu Lake is home to China’s Mosuo matriarchy. The region's 40,000 denizens have come up with a unique own family structure that puts women in charge. The Mosuo's “walking marriages”-in which women can have as many boyfriends as they want throughout their lifetime-replace traditional monogamy and inheritance passes from mother to daughter.
But are the women really in control-and how are men fairing under their rule? Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson spends a week in Lugu Lake with three generations of Mosuo women to find out what life is like in one of the world’s last matriarchies.

Isn't denying men inheritance a form of oppression?
@Dennis-nc3vw

They don't have full authority, they are still under the legal jurisdiction of China. Also 90% of women's "oppression" under patriarchy were just terms of the marriage contract. Women could go it alone or chose to surrender some of their freedom in return for being taken care of. Men in this culture simply don't have this option, that's why they aren't "oppressed."

Seems to me like there's a lot more lenience for the men, seeing as the women can have multiple partners.. that implies that the men can too. Also, I was wondering if the tourism is something that the people of the area approved of, or if they feel it is harmful to their traditions.

I like that lineage and inheritance is tracked through the woman. Children always know who their mother is and take her family name. I have always found it weird that we track ours through our fathers who can deny parentage as they are not the ones whose body we come from. As for hard work, well life is hard work, at least these women maintain ownership of the fruits of their labor.

That is true! My mother, who is a genealogist, is shocked by how many children were raised by non-biological fathers with no one knowing (except for the mom) in the old days. Today, with all the DNA tests, it's harder to keep secrets. Logically, it would make a lot more sense to pass on the heritage line to someone you are certain!

This interviewer I don’t know why, she just annoys me a lot. “Glorified Housewives” I feel like it was rude and insensitive, these women are the same as those not in matriarchy’s but they actually get recognition. I feel like the interviewer just took to this from a tourist view. The point was to learn about their culture, not bring Britain into it. I also feel like she painted it as they were forced to stay there and continue their culture. This was just my opinion but the interviewer really did annoy me A LOT.

I saw another german documentary about it and they too said that women are responsible for everything while men are fishing, drinking und playing games. one woman from that culture in the documentary said that they dont like the men bc they are lazy and have no real responsibilities and only enjoy themselves while women have to do everything. I think thats quite unfair and due to men not having a father role in that society. they are just fucking aroung in every house and spend the womens money. so this culture probably missed the point of matriarchy or is just crazy unequal. I mean sure we don‘t know what matriarchy really means but that culture definetly is not the best example. so it‘s not her fault but your little insight.

also younger women in that documentary said they just keep up tradition bc of their family but dont want to live like it. the women she talked to were like that too. so it seems to be a dying model for a reason, them having no chemistry with the village boys. also the walking marriage might lead to forms of incest.

Their culture is probably in a state decay because of the large influence of the outside world, sadly, as most of "uncivilised" cultures... It's sad. And I found the interviewer quite annoying aswell, she has a really naive unprepared view, it seems to me like she did little to no research before visiting, her questions are pretty much what would you expect from an average tourist.

The world needs to learn from the Mosou culture. The tasks and responsibilities of the women are the same as many women all over the world.... caring for children, running the house, earning the income. The difference with this culture is that they receive recognition for their value to the family.
@vampireknight62581

True, also we need to learn from Viking and Celtic culture as well. Women had rights, they were in charge of the income of the household, if men had touched them in any way without permission they would be punished. I feel like the world would be a better place if we had some of the values of other cultures.

Your right, but it is glaringly obvious they are receiving that recognition because they are in complete control of their lives, there is complete absence of male dominant athorities in their lives, they don't dominate men. I wonder do me act differently when they know they are free to be replaced? To live in a society where men can't start wars would be a mother's dream.

at 7:45 you don't get it: they do work harder but they work for them, their families, themselves. They work a lot but they don't give their hard work to men.
@vivytuan3247

You are right. As a matter of fact,it's common that women work hard while men do nothing except gambling/hanging around in some poor countrysides of China. In cities you can find women and men both work hard for economic pressure but in countryside, male do take exploitive advantage of female in working, farming, breeding...So this Mosuo culture is cool to some extent because women work for themselves and inherit property from their mons to their daughters. However there's bad sides while the laws of marriage are not fitted for them....and with the fast developing tourism some bad influence may appear in the future..

Funny how in a matriarchy the women are still doing all the hard work and the men are happy as can be. Come on, where's the oppression, the shaming and controlling of men's bodies, the constant fear of what might happen to you if you go to the wrong place at the wrong time and the knowledge that you're only valued for your looks so long as you still have them? I was kind of disappointed in this documentary. It seems like the host really jumped into this project with an agenda. Her comments and questions and closing thoughts really showed that she was projecting her frustration with her own western culture onto the Mosuo people rather than just reporting on their lives. Finding out whether or not they have a feminist issue (or rather a solution to her cultures feminist issue) seemed to be her goal. Which, even to me, a proponent of equal rights among genders, seemed a little unfair and unprofessional.

Very well said! Also the way that she said "have you heard of a company called Burberry" bothered me. It seemed to me like she was equating a modern British company's style to traditional garb and belittling the culture (" we have that, too!") as opposed to acknowledging that the design could be in a long list of things the British have appropriated from their territories. If promoting the history of colonialism was her goal, it wasn't explicit.

However, I don't like the growing number of pervy tourist coming there with their exploitive, subjective, motives towards these women and the men of "their" clans/tribal way of life; only viewing the Mosuo customs as a form of debauchery and free women labor force. A place where men are living laissez-faire lifestyles that outsiders now want to get in on as exploitive sexual/cheap labor trade. It should be an international crime for anyone to exploit any global indigenous culture. May Mosuo matriarchal families continue to thrive and live long, healthy, generational existences.

Also, nowhere in this video said anything about pervy tourists. And if you say they are taking advantage of local women, you are saying those women don't have any agency to decide for themselves.

Molly Marmalade There is no such thing as patriarchy. A patriarchy would be men protecting men at the expense of sacrificing women. It doesn’t work. Imagine two tribes of cavemen. One sacrifices men to prosper women, the other doing the opposite. After a few huge hit from natural disasters or resource war from other tribes, which will eventually die off? We all have the genes to protect women at all costs and treat men like shit, which, you call “patriarchy”? It has nothing to do with who is stronger or smarter. Healthy wombs are limited. Sperms are of no value as 1 can do the job of 20. Which is also why women are allowed to be selfish, or even encouraged to be egocentric, while selfish behaviors of men are frowned upon, and self sacrifice of men are seen as good act. 5% of men rise to power because they are great at securing resources against other tribes. Women taking those responsibilities, again, would be risking wombs. That was what survived.

Molly Marmalade No one is jealous, please. Being able to stay home is a luxury. The more underdeveloped and impoverished a region is, the more female labor you see. You think women breaking their backs working at tea plantations under the sun feels empowered that they are strong enough to do hard labor? And sees staying at home as being locked up as slaves? You should stop reading books on trash ideology and talk to them. Go visit non first world countries, you’ll witness a lot of “empowered” “strong” women working typically men’s jobs, and like male peers, working 12hrs a day. So, just screw up U.S.’s economy into depression and women will start “becoming strong” to do male labor.
@zilun
@zilun 6 жыл бұрын
Molly Marmalade You obviously know nothing about archeology of civilization and human evolution. Problem with women like you is you see only the top 5% of men, envy what they have and the rest of men working the mines, sewers, furnace, are just invisible to you. 98% of deaths from working hazards are of men. Must be patriarchy being sexist because dying at work is a male privilege. There is no such thing as patriarchy. A society that sacrifice the ones who carries wombs can’t populate the entire Earth. Maybe now we can, but in the past we can’t, so our genes carries that tendency to value young women over resources and value resources over lives of men. The funny thing is you want men to turn off this switch, but when they do, it’s not what you think will happen. Those men already exists, it’s MGTOW. They want nothing from women.

It's so strange that people find not working and having a lazy life as better than working and taking care of and making the final decisions. I agree with the weaver lady; Mosuo IS the most progressive culture in the world. Just think: no male domination, no lying, cheating, stealing, hitting, intimidating, wars; bombing. Just peace, quiet, and getting on with the daily living. Wow! I love it!!! And another thing, the children aren't being traumatized with fighting, family break-ups, or having to leave their homes, or be dragged from pillar-to-post as the single mom tries to find work, a safe living environment, babysitters, and schools while dad indulges his ego and refuses to pay child support. This is MUCH better. The kids stay with their moms, and the dads can visit. The kids get grandmother, mother, sisters, aunties, and lots to eat in a stable, safe environment. Sounds like a good deal to me.

My family is from a lost matriarchy family group from Si Chuan, we lost our origin and family record in last 100 years wars, but we are well integrated into modern world, still keeping some of the traditions, in our family, women are usually having the higher achievements in everything, and doing more for the family than their husbands, for my grandma's generation, nearly every female is teacher or professor, my mom's generation, every female is engineer. So women make every big decisions in family, every child in my family, specially the female, take the mother's family name, their marriages and educations are most important things in family, but I do enjoy living in the family as a male, because it's less pressure from family.

Keep reflecting on your experiences and decolonize your mind. Us tribal folks have to work hard at it too so its not just a white thing. But i guess this is a documentary for people who don't come from our background so they find it extremely strange to see other ways of life. This is why Mosou and other tribal/indigenous youth have such a hard time adapting to the "new world" if you must categorize it that way. It is just so unaccepting of our ancient traditions and cultures. There's always room for change, but lacking a sense of understanding just leads to subtle forms of degradation and loss of diversity.

BillundBerries Whether it's a patriarchy or a matriarchy depends on if the people get to do what they want or are forced to do it. Even if the responsibilities were equally shared between men and women in the mosou society you can still ask yourself why women takes care of the household work and men takes care of the slaugther and fishing. That seems like a stereotypical remnant of women's chores and men's chores.

budi RJ prostitues arent happy. you realise scientificially men are wired to enjoy sex right. they are more physical than emotional. women are more emotional than physical. so our emotions are first before the physical side. a womans emotional side is so strong their brain can freze and they actually will not feel anything when having sex. litterally. their whole physical side gets shut down. some women do not get jobs as easily as men. so they have to go for prostitution. I also cant believe you are judging all prostitutes that way... a majority of prostitutes are depressed. you need to look at yourself and think, where are these prostiture getting their money from? a person getting a prostitute is not better than the prostitute her self.

I think that's an issue with urban society, it's hard to have pride in one's work when everything is soo detached. My Grandma used to tell me stories from the prairies were neighbours had to be really connected in order to get through the seasons. I've always wondered what the world would be like if we existed in a global matriarchy as opposed to the hellish global patriarchy that was forced upon us. Men are known for being domineering and oppressive but women don't have those same qualities. The beautiful Mosuo tribe is a prime example of what would've happened had women taken the reigns. It warms my heart to know that there actually are matriarchies out there in the world not just because it's women in control but because it's women doing what they do best...nurturing!

Fuck. You. Learn about women in power. Caterina Sforza had toddlers tortured. Mary Queen of Scots burned hundreds of people at the steak. Wu Xietan dealt with political enemies by cutting off their limbs and tongues, blinding them, and then forcing them to eat slop and wallow in their own excrement for the rest of their lives. Studies show women commit 70% of child abuse, and female leaders are significantly more likely to lead their people into war and to conquer new territory. Matriarchy in America: anywhere that's been infected with the welfare state has family structures similar to this. And all those neighborhoods are the worst places in the country.

A lot of people are commenting on how attractive these people are. I think its because women can sleep with whomever they want, have no financial need of men, and no one has to be monogamous. So they are basically just going to have sex with the most attractive guys. Many women will end up having children with the good looking guys, few to none with the unattractive ones. So this culture literally breeds attractiveness.

If you think that the roles of the women under a patriarchy were to only sit on their asses and do nothing, you aren't educated enough on the roles of women. You sound like a nasty individual. Women under patriarchy have always been treated as possessions - one of the first main differences here - and the amount of work they have to for the family home is just as hard as the men working outside in the business. The only difference between the two kinds of jobs is men get money for their role while the women who work at home, which continues even after the "working day" has ended, usually got abuse from the man they married when he got home or if not, simply had the reward of being provided for financially. Men didn't have to worry about their clothing, their food, their day to day needs, the only focus being on leaving the house, doing business and returning with income. In patriarchy women are also responsible for child-raising, which the men in this matriarchal society don't really have to do at all - a secondary difference in this society. You can't compare the two and personally, you certainly sound like you need to go to therapy or something for your view on women...

Even in patriarchy the men have to work hard and face cut-throat competitions for jobs, promotions, etc. Men face lots of hardships in their career and do this so that their family gets food on the table. I think I get it... in matriarchy, even though women still have to be in charge of the house (like in non-matriarchal society) they REALLY are recognized as leaders. Their voices are heard and their opinions count as important. I see... that's what my society is lacking.

SeekIllumination having lived in a patriarchy for 30 years, i wouldn't mind having things switched around for the following 30 at least. I don't know if a culture has ever existed that is not either patriarchal or matriarchal. What does a society that is neither even look like? I doubt the balance could ever be exactly down the middle.

Many societies that are matriarchal in nature are located in high altitude areas, just like the Mosuo people. When the Spaniards arrived to Peru for the first time and saw the Incan women working alongside the Incan men they were horrified. In the Spanish and European Machista societies, women couldn't do anything by themselves and required the authorization of men. God forbid the women were working the land alongside the men in 1532. Yet, the Incas were doing this ages before the Europeans. Nobody talk about these topics because history is written by the ones who won, but if you were a woman living in the 1500 hundreds you would definitely wish to have been born in an Incan or a Mosue society instead of a European, Middle Eastern or East Asian society.

I actually would not mind living there as a woman. Even though i would have to work long and hard i'd be able to learn what it means to work for what i want, and be happy living as a woman with out having to worry about some man breathing down my neck waiting to take advantage of me, and i won't be seen as an inferior sex. I'd always be with my family and meet nice men and settle down and live a peaceful life.

Mimi143iloveyou Yeah Matriarchy is the best. I don't mind working harder if it gives women more rights in return. A relationship where men have no say in things sounds peaceful.

@@missxmarvel why do you hate men so much? Sure we do bad things but it is not like *ALL* men are bad. You say men should be under woman and be treated like nothing and oppressed. The point of this is to show woman can be just as good as men being providers and everything. You however are turning this good thing into shaming men.

@@missxmarvel So because I am a male you assume I'm probably gonna rape or murder. What is next? That because I am black I will join a gang and shoot up streets? Or that I am Asian so I eat cats? That is your logic. I respect people no matter what gender. Male or female. What I don't respect is hate. I don't dislike you because you are a woman, but because you seem to hate men and probably would get rid of me in an instant I'd you could because I am "scum".

Miles Gomez You only respect women so that you can get a good shag,that's how most of you sex obsessed crazies act. You could have hooked up with a hooker instead of tricking naive women that you love them but nooo..it's always about you and your needs most of you don't give a crap about the babies you screwed into the world but 20 years later you want to be daddy again. But yet you wonder why some women don't like your ass.

Beautiful. In this world of oppression, where the main rulers and people in authority are disproportionately male, finally, there is a place where women can thrive strongly, freely, and be truly happy, just how they are supposed to.

I agree with the host, seems more like a society of glorified housewives. And the added bonus of being spared the obnoxiousness of slut shaming. Other than that, same old paradigm to me. Men sitting back and getting laid, while women bare the brunt of the work and responsibility. Not quite how I envision a matriarchy typically thought of in the western part of the world.

Women have the option to go it alone in the West: they just don't take it. Either they get married or go on welfare for the babies they pop out 99% of the time. So yes, I think it's obvious who the real winner is.
