Being from New York City I've loved this show since the second i heard it, because it's so much about the island of newfoundland...and the fact that our city is an island as well, the heart of the story really is in two places at once. Just makes it even more special.

As someone involved in theater myself, I feel for the actors. That audience sounds like a Sunday matinee crowd, the hardest to play to because the energy they give to the stage is next to nothing. With that said, "Come From Away" is great and everyone needs to at least listen to the cast album.

And as a theatre FOH engineer: this is a phenomenal mix for that type of environment
@AliciaNyblade3 жыл бұрын
@@joshmaday1462 Really? Wow. That's rough. If that's a "phenomenal mix" for an audience at a Google Talk, I can't imagine what a truly lackluster one is like.
@joshmaday14623 жыл бұрын
@@AliciaNyblade I guess I commented that while still listening to the opening number. For one thing, it’s fairly unlikely that their usual mixer did this performance. It’s probably a guy who got dropped on it that morning, who is used to maybe managing two mics for speakers, not musical performance. Mixes for recordings are also notoriously rough. There generally isn’t a dedicated mix for the record, it’s usually just capturing whatever was coming out of the speakers in the room (which has very different needs from an audience listening at home). The fact that the gang vocals are actually cohesive, and there aren’t voices sticking out was what caught my attention. But of course, it’s google with nearly infinite resources, so maybe there was a dedicated broadcast mix, and this was only a moderately okay mix. But just from my experience working in corporate AV, that’s exceedingly rare.

Watching the faces of the other cast members while Jenn sang "Me and the Sky," it was like they were hearing and reacting to it for the first time. It shows the power of the show that even those who live with it can still be so moved.

I just read in a KZbin comment that Capt. Bass didn’t know that that solo was happening until she saw it live for the first time…. And also, she and her husband saw the show I think almost 80 times (probably more by now!) - and even after all that, her husband still cried every time Jenn sang “Tom, oh thank God I finally got through… no I’m fine Tom, I’m fine.” The poor man had been trying all day to find out if she was ok bc two of the planes were HER airline. I can’t imagine I get chills thinking about it…. and Jenn is absolutely phenomenal

I liked the one about the Beatles tribute band playing in the bar. The Beatles first set foot in North America, in Gander Newfoundland. So they had a great time to share. (This did not make it into the show because the producer wisely decided against licensing all the Beatles songs. I saw a KZbin video where they recreated the song as part of the "cut content".)

Here's another story - my sister got married 9/9/11, two days before. She and her new husband were scheduled to fly out to Portugal on 9/11 for their honeymoon, and of course that didn't happen. I think it wasn't until Friday, Sept 14, that they were able to fly out. We later heard that they were camping somewhere in Portugal and met a couple from Canada. My sister exclaimed, "Oh, thank you for taking our planes!" The couple had a bewildered look on their faces - evidently they hadn't been in touch with civilization for a little while. My new brother-in-law then spoke up, "Oh, don't mind my wife - she's just babbling." And they went on with their hike, knowing the couple would put two and two together later on...
