Reiner is half-soldier,half-warrior as well as half-marleyan and half-eldian. His whole purpose of life was a big lie. His childhood friends are either dead or captured. And now he is seeing these warrior candidates go through the same shit again. It's very tough to be Reiner. The sleeping position of Berthold is referred to the 'the hanging man' according to tarot card. It was caused due to severe guilt and PTSD from his previous actions.

The last scence of the flashback with Reiner and Eren is so important and it's another parallel with the ending scene of this episode. Reiner says "Just do what you've gotta do. Keep moving forward." And Eren ends with "Only those who keep moving forward will ever know." These sentences are so important and carry so much meaning. Goosebumps yet again.

The reason why Annie and Kenny met. Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie, who infiltrated the wall and joined the army, moved to know the whereabouts of the Founding titan as planned. Annie became the one to infiltrate the monarchy, and while on her mission, she followed a man who seemed to have something to do with the monarchy and that was Kenny Annie used her wits and spoke as if she were Kenny's daughter, and he was not deceived. (Kenny told Levi just before his death, "I'm not the kind of person to be someone's parents." With that thought, he couldn't have done anything to have children, so he confidently thought Annie was lying.) Annie kicked Kenny and barely ran away. So they gave up investigating the monarchy and destroyed the Wall Rose to implement a plan to see how the Founding titan will react. And they broke the door of the Trost and witnessed Eren titan, and thought he could be the Founding titan. Of course, he may not be the Founding titan, but they only needed an excuse to return to their hometown. So they aimed to stop destroying the walls and take Eren.

When Kenny said he couldn’t be someone’s parent i just thought he didn’t see himself fulfil that “father figure” role cause he was rogue af. Plus he made a promise to his sister (who works in brothels, to probably never sleep with a hooker) so he immediately knew Annie is lying. And no, they didn’t assume Eren was the founding immediately after they saw him transform for the first time. Reiner & Bert only knew at that episode when Eren made contact with the titan Dina that HE was also the one who has the founding. They just probably knew he has the titan that’s been missing from marley.

@@brix1998 I think it's a difference in expression. In the 3×15 flashback, Reiner said, "I finally found a clue to the goal I've been looking for for five years(Founding titan)." In 2×9, he also said, "If Eren is not a coordinator..." It is true that they saw the Eren titan and thought he might be the founding titan. But the key to what I want to say is why they bet everything on Eren, even though it's not clear whether he has a Founding. Even if Eren wasn't the founder, taking a nine titan was a good achievement, so they thought it was a excuse for returning to their hometown.

I've always liked it that Eren seems to randomly ask Falco "is the other candidate a girl" during their conversation. It really shows how much this Eren has matured and changed. I couldn't even imagine s1,2,3 Eren picking up on layered nuance and making such contextual inferences while having a subdued conversation.

Honestly, Jean had arguably the least colorful story among the main group. It was nice when back in season 1 he was being propped up to be a leader, only for Isayama to give both roles of leader and genius to Armin. In my opinion, Jean was just poorly utilitized and he deserved more characterization, both in the anime and the manga. At least Connie had this internal conflict with his Titan mother and ***** (spoiler redacted).

the anime skipped this but: Annie was the one carring Bert and Reiner to wall Maria. It´s a long way and a lot of titans were following them. She and Marcel were supposed to switch when one is exhausted but Marcel was dead (and Reiner and Berthold to slow to take that part), so she had to run the way all on her own and almost died. Some of the pure titans following them looked like Game of Thrones characters btw xD

I am pretty sure Reiner had intentionally suppressed the healing so they don't discover that he is a Titan. Remember in the beginning when Eren still did not know how to control his powers, he said his hand bites were not healing, but they had healed a whole arm and leg when he first transformed. So, should be able to control it.

As much as I love this episode, I wished they put more of the scenes in the manga with Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt. There was a whole chase scene (without Marcel's help) of them trying to reach wall Maria while fighting off the titans, and even bits over the past 5 years they stayed on Paradis. It showed more how they learned to trust each other not merely as comrades but as friends. They were basically as close to one another as Eren, Mikasa, and Armin were.

Random thought I had.. Reiner is trying to protect Gabi from becoming a titan. Marcel did the same thing with Pock when they were younger. I also believe in episode 2 of this season Colt is trying to do the same for Falco. I think he spearheads everyone cheering for Gabi on the train to try to influence the decision of her becoming the Armored Titan.

Actually I don't think that's it - though that was my initial guess. More likely is that she came up with it on the spot because Kenny was onto her. I know this episode covers 3 or so manga chapters, so they had to make cuts for time, but it would have been nice to see the part of the flashback story where they actually arrive at the wall. Annie is in titan form, carrying R and B, running from a horde of titans, and completely exhausted on account of having run the entire distance herself, because Marcel was no longer there to carry them partway with his own titan.

4:25 - Technically speaking, all those in the internment zones is half (or possibly even more) Marleyan. But so long as you have even a hit of Eldian blood in your ancestry, you have the ability to turn into a titan. Which means automatically being placed in the internment zone.

I can say that some of it is from the backstories of some of the Warrior's parents. Also, from the history of the Eldian Empire's conquest (as stated in S3), they interbred with non-Eldian races they conquered to produce more slaves that can turn into titans for more conquests. @@jasonamigo023 don't worry, I've read the manga. Also, spoilers for those who haven't. As a matter of fact, all subjects of ymir are descendents of ymir. So it's clear that her children will have half of her blood, her granchildern a fourth and so on. When we get to the current events (which are almost 2000 years after) they will have only a small percentage of her blood in them. The problem is that you made it seem like marleyans are normally having children with eldians. The only two times when that was the case was with reiner where the situation is unclear if i remeber correctly and with Tom Xavier where he hid the fact that he was eldian. Considering that Tom's wife killed herself when she found out, I'd say that it's highly unlikely that marleyans would knowingly hook up with eldians

Haha You don't have to be a direct descendant of Ymir to be a subject, you just have to be an Eldian. The only last living descendants of Ymir are Zeke and Historia. If all the titans and titan shifters we see were direct descendants, that would mean Zeke and Historia's blood aren't special, but we know that they are. And what makes them special is the fact that they're direct descendants. Otherwise, Eren would have had no problems using the Founding Titan's power. You're right in that no Marleyan would knowingly hook up with an Eldian. But in their 1,800+ year reign, the Eldians became so mixed up with the local people they conquered (including Marley) it became impossible to tell who's got Eldian blood in their ancestry. Which is why they need a blood test to verify lineage. This is also the reason why Xavier and Kruger got away with it for so long. They look indistinguishable to any regular Marleyan.

@@jasonamigo023 it's true that it is not confirmed what royal blood actually means. The thing is, initially, only ymir had the power of the titans. After that, maria rose and sina had it. There is no explanation for how random people from the eldian empire would be connected to the paths without being descendants of ymir. The most popular theory that i found is that the royal family is royal because they have a high concentration of the first king fritz dna through incest. That's also probably why royal titans, like zeke, are stronger than normal ones

I don't think eren was deliberately digging info from falco. he actually cared about the kid, and a lot of things he said he actually meant it. also I think eren was just pretending to not know which arm he should put the armband on. he had his dad's whole memory so he should be able to figure it out. plus eren was not stupid, he could tell which side it should be when he's surrounded by eldian soldiers all day.

When the smiling titan ignores Bertolt you can see his confusion as well. The reason the smiling titan ignores him is a callback to Season 3 part 2 where Dina tells Grisha that she'll find him no matter what form she takes before getting turned into the smiling titan. Then in this episode we see her titan ignore Bertolt and head towards Eren's house instead as some twisted form of fulfilling that final promise. Haunting shit.
