Undertaking is very much illegal in the U.K. and Europe. Also they fine people for ‘middle lane hogging’ when the inside lane is empty on a motorway / highway.
@neilturner6749 Жыл бұрын
If you’re in the inside lane in the UK, and catch up with a slower vehicle in the middle lane, you’re under no obligation to move to the outside lane to pass them. That’s not undertaking. “Undertaking” is making a specific manoeuvre to pass a vehicle on the inner side. The law allows you to pass on the inside if the traffic in your lane is moving more swiftly than those in the outer lane/s. A Hertfordshire cop car once suddenly and deliberately slowed in the middle lane to “make” me pass it on the inside, then proceeded to pull me over and issue a ticket. I contested the ticket and it was dismissed without making it to court.
@edkwon Жыл бұрын
'Undertaking' = to get into a lane occupied by another car and slowing down to merge into that lane rather than aggressively passing to overtake, I don't get the rationale why that maneuver would be illegal in EU and UK, seems like a safe and reasonable move to me

Matt that email you got about the 55mph speed limit is completely false, it had nothing to do with American cars being “worse” than European cars that’s total BS tiny European cars didn’t have stronger body structures than solid body on frame American land yachts! The truth is Nixon authorized the 55mph speed limit as a way of conserving gas during the oil crisis as 55mph was deemed to be the most fuel efficient speed for cars at that time.

Have to disagree with you on the Audi S7's handling on the track. I've tracked my stock 2017 at LRP and found it neutral in the turns, solid in the braking but needed better pads for a track day. Overall was running 1:07s in traffic at 8:10ths. Perhaps is gets worse when driving at 10:10ths

I used to do criminal defense, but now I’m a deputy prosecuting attorney in a relatively small county (coming from a more populated county). I’m exacerbated by the number of people that just cruise in the left lane. It’s not age dependent. It’s just this small town attitude of “hey, I’m not in a hurry so no one else should be.” It drives me NUTS on a daily basis. I handle all misdemeanor and traffic infractions in the county, and I’m basically begging for law enforcement to enforce the law (not only is it illegal but there are multiple signs stating so on this 10 mile stretch of highway). Drives me crazy on the way to and from work. I come from a bigger (ish) city growing up where people drive fast and get out of the way. This small town vibe just doesn’t work for me, and it creates congestion when there should be none since it’s a SMALL COUNTY. Sorry, end rant.

Also people would be terrified if they knew how many people were driving without ever having a license, driving while suspended, and (most aggravatingly driving without insurance). People suck so get uninsured motorist coverage. I have way too many hit and run cases where the asshole flees and doesn’t have insurance. Even if we get a restitution order from the court, good luck collecting that money. It varies by state, but look up the percentage of people in your state driving without insurance.

Speedo error changes with tire wear. Small %, but not insignificant. Also, not all tires of the same size are same diameter. Again, it's a small difference, but it adds up and can compound with wear difference.
@The_Stanman Жыл бұрын
Capping to 10mph over speed limit would be so dangerous. Speed differences between cars is far more dangerous than absolute speed. To Matt's point, it would only apply to 2027+ cars. That means you have new cars driving slow, while most cars would be going fast. That'll create a huge, dangerous speed differential. It's crazy how many have this simplistic idea that "speeding = dangerous". The reality is that speed differentials, not following left-lane passing laws, and tailgating are far bigger contributors to accidents (and traffic) then speed itself.
@fraserwright9482 Жыл бұрын
Which would in turn mean that you become a magnet for cops. Since 2016 drive a UK car with Yellow number plates in Europe and you will be stopped and given fines an on the spot. If you have had the limit removed and it's a law, not just a voluntary manufacturer decision then it's like rolling coal. I would assume that they would target vehicles that are higher risk, hgv, pick ups, RVs, ones with trailers. As an easy way to reduce emissions. But you never think other countries have tackled this problem, like automatic assault rifles it's not looked at rationally, but as a person threat to who you are as American

I just want to say I love you guys and love your podcasts. I think you may have missed a few points in your discussion about speed limits. Speed limits are supposed to be mandated (at least on a federal level and feel free to check my facts) by the speed at which a certain percentile of people are driving. We’ve never revisited it. Think about on a local level… I don’t live in Los Angeles, but I would bet the speed limit in most residential neighborhoods there is 25. That’s a speed limit they set in 1925 or whatever and we’ve never revisited it. It’s insane. In 1925, cars were huge, heavy and didn’t stop. Things have changed.
@fraserwright9482 Жыл бұрын
To your point speed limits have been imposed due to fuel shortages, environmental reasons and have stayed there. Driving standards and enforcement in America are poor. Most Americans feel the need to drive above the speed limit or do shady things until they are caught. Then use our Sponsor of the podcast to get off this or argue why they shouldn't pay. I feel that Matt has always felt that the rules don't apply and he is not unique as an American. I also do not think the argument that Matt has where you have to sit a test or have a race licence makes you statistically a better driver, ask your insurance company why you don't have track day cover.

There can be a happy middle ground... Perhaps limited to 10 mph over within city limits or something. I don't know LA, but in my city the ring roads have on and off ramps on both sides of a major expressway, people are changing multiple lanes to get across all the time. It's 50mph, there's no reason anyone needs to go over 60... Accidents happen all the time when cars are going way too fast for the nature of what is going on. It makes sense there. Or driving across downtown in the middle of the night, no need to go over 10mph over. When you leave the city and you go on an interstate or up through a canyon area or a backroad... The limit is removed. Problem solved. You can safely pass your trucks up the canyon. You can go 100mph on the highway if you want. The places where you're most likely to kill an innocent person are regulated, the places where you're not, do whatever you want, and highway patrols still get their revenue. It would also help to limit street racing and these takeovers... Going to be real hard to do "slides" in a 25mph zone when your rear wheels won't spin over 35.

I disagree with Matt and Zach on a few points, speed limits were brought in to conserve fuel usage, both in America and other countries. Car types are not applicable, American, German cars are as bad as each other, yes certain models might be better suited. But there is no criteria. There have been speed limits in other countries and cars with manufacter built speed limits. There is a poor standard of training, enforcement and road design in America. You also mix up driver skill or enthusiasm with a lower chance of crashing or causing an accident. If this argument was true you would have insurance on a race track. I also think the American belief that until you are caught you should do as you feel. Its why you have Mr Ticket as a sponsor as you don't want to pay. That is part of your culture and much like many laws, the implementation is not rational or objective for the whole community.
