Good thing you had the spare at work. That's a huge amount of money for an entire new key. Quite an amazing solution you came up with! Saved you a fair bit of money there!

Actually it was a learning process. The true cheap fix is a $13 key off amazon that has no electronics in the fob. I got one and took the guts from the broken key and put em in it. Cut the key and now I have 3 keys. After this happened I talked to a few people who actually spent the $300. At least I only spent $150. Amazon actually has keys with the electronics for about $30.

Great video! I just stumbled upon this as I was researching what to do other than going to the stealership lol because of a broken key... I've got a 2014 explorer but I only got 1 key when I bought it. Never realizing some day the blade of the key would loosen up and break off. Stupid question but do you think if I buy that replacement fob that you posted above on amazon and put the circuit board from my broken key in it, it would work fine and be good to go? Thanks.

Very clever trick! I’m sure it will help someone out. I wonder if you could get a chip-less door key made to make it a little easier. With that you won’t have to cover the new key with tin foil since it can sit off to the side until you are ready to program it. I got chip less door keys made for the last few cars of mine in case I ever locked myself out of the car. They obviously couldn’t start the car but they could let me in to retrieve the keys that can. I left mine with friends who could meet if I were stranded but if you don’t carry valuables in the vehicle then it is safe to hide it somewhere outside the car since it will not work as an ignition key (immobilizer gonna immobilize ;)).

I actually just ordered a $13 key from amazon. Its a key with no electronics in the fob part. I took the circuit board out of the key that broke and will try to put it in the new key when I get it. I can then get it cut. If the board doesnt fit I can still use it like you are saying. Now that I been through this I know all the options. There are easier ones, but I thought it was cool to outsmart the fuckin ford dealer who told me there was nothing I could do. Good to hear from you.

The plastic case on mine cracked and the key pulled out. Dealer wanted 400 +, hardware store wanted 220, mobile car locksmith wanted 255. Bought a empty case on Amazon for $5 shipped, pried the broken case apart, swapped the electronics, took it to a local hardware store who cut it for free. Not the store that wanted $220, they wouldn't even cut my key for a fee.

It's unreal. Being an old fuck I didn't know about the whole keys with chips thing. The ford dealer tried to take me for a ride. It would have been $200 for what I could do $30 on my own. If your gonna rob me at least put a gun to my head. Just shows the rich theifs get richer and the workin man gets fucked.

What if u only got 1 key 2007 f150 and the black chip part broke off and is lost do you have to go to a dealer

If Its like a 2014 you need two chips to program a new key. So yes the dealer has to do it. If it's same as my 2014.

Yeah you are correct. Thats why I pinned a comment that says "update". Left the vid up for anyone who did the same stupid thing I did, as a way out of it. So now I have 3 keys
