I would like to get an update for this. This literally just happened to me today on my SC2 during an endurocross race. Edit: Technology Elevated called me actually. They looked up my order and called me to discuss the issue. I appreciate that. After discussing the issue, we went over a bunch of stuff to look over to make sure the cable is adequate to stay seated. And even discussed changes to the next iterations of the carb itself to possibly mitigate it. I was told it is very rare and for now am ok with waiting to see if it happens again. IMO this is A+ customer service, and gives me a lot of peace of mind. The carb itself is awesome, and I highly recommend it.

Allen head screws for the throttle slide cap are a much better option than phillips head, as you don't have to worry about stripping them. Some of the Keihin carbs come with Allen head screws as well depending on the bike while others come with phillips head. I always swap them out to make life easier.

Dirt on the slide caused the slide to momentarily stick & when you chopped the throttle the cable pushed back thru the slide and out of the cable support slot. Just a guess, but when I saw the dirt on the slide that’s the only thing that made sense. Cool video, I like videos that make you think. Keep them coming.
@jarydt11524 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was dirt, I think It would of been 2 stroke oil build up from running the idle high for so long if the idle adjustment affects the fuel to air mixture on that carb and not throttle
@Ratskinny4 жыл бұрын
Regardless of dirt or oil residue, this momentary slide stick as described was the cause.
@edwardcomstock84164 жыл бұрын
I also agree. The cable slack came back without the slide and moved from its center position. I would increase the spring tension a bit by stretching just a little. I might even add a bit of solder to the ball-end of the cable to make it a bit larger. Obviously not too large to fit through the installation hole.
@TheDirtyBirchTrails4 жыл бұрын
You could always insert something like a rubber caulking in the side hole so it cant pop out unless you physically pull out the silicone . Let the silicone/caulking dry fully before putting it back together. I've done this in the past.

What a coincidence! Two weeks back, my throttle cable broke near my grip. It was a lectron throttle cable with about 25 hours on it and we were about 12 miles from the trucks on a 50 mile ride day. We ended up putting safety wire thru the braid of the throttle cable and folding the safety wire back toward the broken end, then we jammed the brass stopper up around the safety wire and packed it full of jb quik. It held the rest of the 40 mile ride with a slightly high idle. Lectron told me that this generally happens when you have too much slack in the cable. I assume the slack allows the cable to bend and straighten every time you use the throttle and the fatigue of that motion leads to the break. That was a creative fix you did!

Where there is a will, there is a way! Great job staying calm and "MacGyvering" a viable solution. A good lesson is whenever facing a challenge, remain calm. When you do remain calm, you are able to use 100% of your brains capabilities to figure out a solution. When you get stressed, panic or freak out, your ability to use logic and reason is significantly reduced. This was a great example of problem solving for your boys to witness!

In this mode ride the kill button to slow down. Back in the day it was not uncommon to have cables break. In this case it looks like there is not enough spring tension on the slide, I would have stretched the spring a bet to make sure washer is held in place.

Din you check if the end-cable (carb side) can fit trough the middle hole? Being stranded isnt fun. I crashed my xr600r on a trail this weekend. Brought tools but what happened was i bent the muffler up under the rear fender. So my tire was sitting on the muffler when I got on the bike. Ripped every lug off one side of my tire during a long hill climb back to the top of the trail. I just couldn't bend it straight enough not to rub. Wasnt sure I was gonna make it back without the tire exploding. Was a learning experience. 😬

I’d check the slack going into the carb. Too much slack from the cable could have caused the cable to go loose in the carb for a split second when throttle was closed causing the cable to jump out of the seat.
@Brett694 жыл бұрын
Is it possible the dirt buildup you found on the slide was just enough for it to stick and when you closed the throttle it caused just a second of slack in the cable? Either way what a great idea using the idle to make it back!

Lectron and SC don't make cables specific to throttle actuator. That's interesting about what could happen given idle adj. technic. I thought it might be lost cable-end on carb. side. What to do with ride-by-wire.
@nathandyess53104 жыл бұрын
With the SC2 SmartCarb the cable end has to move .46 inches or nearly half an inch to come out of its retention counterbore. Not likely that Kyle had that much slack going. It's possible he may have been able to snap the throttle closed manually, pushing the cable end down beyond the slack he has, faster than the spring return rate when combining factors like upward slide momentum (SmartCarb slides are decently heavy) on a quick whack open doing the pivot turn and any friction caused by vacuum and/or fuel/moisture/dirt in the slide cavity... Either way an interesting result. SmartCarbs have light springs standard so a stiffer one combined with checking for and maintaining pretty tight slack may be just the ticket to ensure it never happens again.

I know this is old. But that bent cable needs to go. If you have to much play in the throttle it could go down out of the keyway and out of the groove. If it was me I would want that washer to have a finger that would go down into the removal slot to make it impossible to come out. There is a reason OEM carbs have the little plastic keeper on the end of the spring that blocks the slot.
