Just took a gender law and policy class and I actually know about that online sex trafficking law (FOSTA) and the reality is that the furry site shutting down doesn't necessarily mean that anything bad was going on there. They possibly just shut down for the same reason craigslist personals did, which was that the law now made website liable for what was posted there involving sex trafficking. Sounds like a good thing but in reality it ends up being bad for everyone involved. What happened was that lots of websites (or features) shut down out of an abundance of caution to not get sued and it made life for sex workers a lot harder. Instead of being to use the internet to find clients, most places to do that shut down and many sex workers had to go back on the streets or use pimps again to find clients, which makes their work a lot less safe. And then on the sex trafficking side it's actually become way harder to find people being trafficked because that stuff has been pushed deeper underground. Before, law enforcement was able to go through websites and locate people being trafficked but after this law it's been was harder to find them. This is truly a bad law for everyone and if the opportunity arises people should support repealing it.

Look, I know everybody’s heard horror stories of groups of fans doing immoral, “cringe”, and sometimes illegal things, or just starting civil wars or whatever, but these fans are always either individuals or small organized cliques of radicals that don’t represent the whole fandom. Every time such a story surfaces, the actions of the vocal minority are condemned by the 99% of good fans. (And by the way, arguing doesn’t make a fandom toxic. Arguing is healthy if handled well. If it isn’t handled well and emotions are taken too far, refer back to what I said about radical fans). Every fandom has a vocal minority, even if they don’t make headlines. You’re more likely to hear such stories from bigger communities, but the ratio of “crazy” to “normal” is the same across fandoms as per a statistical phenomenon called the Law of Large Numbers. People hate fandoms all the time, even though they most likely engage in fandoms themselves. Liking something makes you part of that fandom. And before you push up your anime glasses and tell me that “actually, fandom is short for ‘fanatic domain’ and I am a NORMAL fan, not a crazy fanatic”, may I remind you that denotation does not equal connotation, so while “fanatic” brings to mind images of crazy devotion, it’s just the long word for “fan”. Fan is short for fanatic (as per Oxford Dictionary, or Merriam-Webster, I don’t recall), like how rap is an acronym for “rhythm and poetry” but has become its own word. Also, a domain is just a group in the broadest possible sense, accurately capturing how large and diverse fandoms are. Therefore, a fandom is just all the fans of a specific thing. Your level of engagement in a fandom doesn’t determine how much of a fan you are. Fanartists depend on casuals who view their art, for instance. The masses are just as important as the creators. By hating fandoms, you’re also hating on people who have genuinely been helped by finding a sense of community by connecting with like-minded people. Fandoms don’t ruin things for you if you find the right people in said fandom to interact with. With bigger fandoms especially, it’s not hard. I get that negativity is stronger than positivity, but you’ve got to fight that internal conflict for your own good. It’s your fault that vocal minorities of weird fans are never recognized as such, and are instead chalked up to the whole group.

Always feel like it's important to state that like, *most* hookup sites closed down after FOSTA/SESTA passed. It's the same reason Craigslist shut down it's personals section. It's not indicative of them being traffickers, the laws made websites that hosted material related to sex trafficking criminally liable for it on the same level as an intentional collaborator, regardless of the sites policies, moderation, or willingness to help law enforcement with discovered instances of sex trafficking. It also made no distinction between trafficking and consensual sex work, and the net result of it has only driven sex trafficking to harder to find places and made sex work more dangerous for sex workers.

Ah yes, scamming desperate people out of their money, the only real "easy way to make money quick" =/ Like, yeah, bronies can be "cringe" (and what fandom doesn't have its fair share of those cases) but I still think there's a line between making fun of people and defrauding them. I mean, for a comparative example, it's the difference between Tumblr cringe compilations and dashcon. Both not the best humanity has to offer, but I think we can agree that one is worse than the other.
@diamondminer54593 жыл бұрын

This whole bronymate situation reminds me of the furry dating website controversy. In fact they sound exactly the same, can’t read messages unless you pay a certain amount of money, most messages just being from bots, terrible advertising, and overall just being very scummy. I am heavily convinced that they are both made by the same people as that they just put on some different photos a different background and a different name and called it a day. Also the whole man woman trans thing offends me deeply. Edit: I just saw that at 10:47 that they were heavily suspected for making the website that I was describing. My guess as to why this happens a lot to niche fandoms is the idea "Oh these idiots are desperate, they'll do anything". And while some might, more and more won't. While fandom culture is still niche, it's also more mainstream than ever. Gone are the days of fandom culture only existing of desperate nerds in mom's basement (not that some don't remain). So with more average people engaging in fandom, the desperate need for contact lessens because they can go to meet-ups and conventions. I think that's why dating scams are failing more nowadays. Or well, they were until 2020 due to all of the isolation.

I wanted to give more information on SESTA/FOSTA mentioned at 11:45 , Pounced wasn't shut down for committing illegal actions, but was a victim of a blanket bill that did almost nothing about sex trafficking but instead was a gross violation of free speech, which people have been trying to repeal for years now! Even Bernie Sanders signed the bill as it was basically forced upon politicians where if you didn't sign it, you would be seen as "supporting sex trafficking" when that clearly wasn't the case. SESTA/FOSTA, in a nutshell, was a bill passed with the intention of cutting down on Sex Trafficking, but a glaring problem was how it went about it, with of the main points being that it would hold site owners FULLY accountable and able to be charged if acts of sex trafficking were found to be engaged in on the site in any way. If a couple hooked up on a dating site and cash was exchanged, the website owners could be held accountable and imprisoned/fined as if they were enabling it. This bill was the sole reason that tumblr banned NSFW content on their site, as the terms of it were so vague that they just didn't want to deal with the possible repercussions that it would cause. This is also why sex workers on Twitter/instagram doing strictly online content constantly face scrutiny by the platforms of their choice, getting accounts banned left and right even thought they didn't violate any ToS. Countless sites like Pounced were forced to shut down as they couldn't afford the legal trouble that continuing operation would case. There's way more to this than I'm letting on, but it'd be greatly appreciated if you could research a bit more and do a follow up on this point.
@Straitjacketzz3 жыл бұрын
honestly the most surprising part was finding out their social media pages are still active to this day???? usually with scams they shut everything down after a bit. i wonder why they kept this one up, the site for sure has to be dead especially since the original fandom boom is over

What can be said about the people behind Bronymate, Furrymate and Furfling is that they're most certainly the same group/organization. When checking out their registrar data on WHOIS, the three domains not only have the same small provider, but also the exact same contact information. The domains for Bronymate and Furfling were also updated on the same date (2022-03-18).

I mentioned this in my own comment just a few minutes ago, but I remember learning about how FurryMate had been subject to several court cases due to unauthorized charges being made to user’s cards etc. they had a thing in their TOS that effectively functioned as a contract, which allowed them to freely charge your card as they see fit, without providing you any services. From the sound of it, BronyMate was doing that exact thing. I had no idea that Furfling was part of the same company though, considering that it was advertised everywhere well after the FurryMate junk happened.
