Brooklands BAC 1-11

Andy Bloomfield, volunteer team leader of the Brooklands BAC 1-11 takes us around this important 1960's airliner having first talked about the evolution of British designed passenger aircraft since WW2. Special thanks to Andy Videos for the introduction video of the plane landing at Brooklands.

Great video & interesting history on this fantastic plane. I only ever flew on one BAC 1-11 a Dan Air evening flight home from Malaga - Gatwick in 1981. My Dad had been chatting to the head steward, and informed him that he & my Mum were retired cabin crew for BEA(where they met)..anyway a long story short, he asked the Captain if my brother & I could visit the cock pit. In no time at all we were up there and had a lovely clear night view of mid/northern Spain. Both flight crew were extremely accommodating, and had my brother and I changing light bulbs and even(very supervised) allowed us to slightly turn the yolk for a subtle bank. Wow, this was something we will never forget. Anyway after a long time, our Father came into the cockpit and thanked the pilots for their amazing demonstration & putting up with all our questions. Still though, the Captain wanted us to see the soon approaching channel Islands, so my Dad had to go back to his seat and wait lol. After seeing Jersey & Guernsey lit up, we thanked the pilots so much, exited and sat down just as we had started our decent. What an experience for me(10yrs old) and my bro(12yrs old). G-BDAT was the aircraft - as my Father photographed it pre-boarding. I wish I could have written down the names of the ever so friendly pilots & all crew in fact for that very memorable flight❤️.

Ich bin begeistert von diesem Film und habe so viele neue Details von meinem Lieblings- Flugzeug gesehen, das für uns Berliner in den 60er und 70er Jahren so wichtig für die Verbindung nach Westdeutschland und für den beginnenden Flugtourismus war. Sehr schade, dass die internen britischen Vorgaben und Regularien eine Weiterentwicklung dieses genialen und robusten Flugzeugs verhindert haben. Gleiches galt ja auch für die hochtechnisierte Trident, die auch unter den relativ schwachen Triebwerken litt. Es war sehr schade, dass es die britische Flugzeugindustrie nicht schaffte, trotz der aufkommenden Übermacht von Airbus in den 80er Jahren ein Re-Engine-Programm mit den stärkeren Roll-Royce Tay Triebwerken für die BAC 1-11 aufzulegen. Die Fokker 100 hatte diese Triebwerke und es war eine ideale Kombination ! Leider ist über die Variante von Dee Howard wenig zu erfahren. Die BAC One-Eleven war ein robustes "Arbeitspferd der Lüfte", dem wir Berliner nur danken können. Bin damals als Schüler mit British Airways in einer 1-11 500 von Tegel nach Stuttgart geflogen und mit einer 1-11 300 von Laker Airways in den Urlaub nach Mallorca usw..... Eine schöne Erinnerung und der Sound beim Anlassen der Triebwerke der Rolls-Royce Spey war ein turbinenartiges Jaulen und später hochfrequentes Sirren vom Feinsten. Wir waren aber auch sehr geplagt als Anwohner in der Nähe des Flughafens Berlin-Tegel, da die BAC beim Starten wirklich sehr laut war, da ja nur ein sehr geringes Bypass-Verhältnis vorlag, also mehr ein Turbojet. Wenn man sich überlegt, welchen Service man damals auf einem Charterflug bekam und man heute schon für ein Sandwich betteln müsste, war es doch eine schöne Zeit.
