My Father was born in 1910; he passed in 2006 at the age of 96, when I was 50 years old. He was a big fan of Neil Diamond; Cracklin’ Rosie was his favourite track. I played his favourite track at his humanist led funeral ceremony. I miss my Dad every single day of my life; he was my best friend and mentor in life. Evert time I hear a Neil Diamond track I think of my Dad. Neil is one of my heroes. I hear Neil is suffering with Parkinson’s; I am deeply saddened and pray for his good health. I hope he takes solace in how lived he is by me and all of his fans.

This song just punches you in the gut. I grew up on those same Brooklyn Roads that Neil did in the '70's. I used to look outside my bedroom window looking down onto Ocean Avenue dreaming about being Tom Seaver or Joe Namath. I moved out of NY as an adult but went back on a family visit. But like Neil said, it wasn't the same. Neil is able to just level you with his lyrics.

Your comment is in this day. " a punch in the gut". This reflects an emotion, an experience that wasn't just lived - it is such a part of us, hard to separate yesterday and today. It's hard to explain to many, which is not important. Happy to hear that I am not alone on that thought. I should add, this is not a lament. It's my belief that musicians do their best reflective story songs and evocative work around the age of 26-30. "Running on Empty" Jackson Browne (29), "Summer of '69" Bryan Addams (26), "Alone again (Naturally)" Gilbert O'Sullivan (26). As well as Neil's "I am I said" (29). Is this also why many musicians eerily have died around the age of 27?

Not for my past, but it was more of a sense of relating to the feeling of nostalgia for anything. And some of the lyrics directly related to some personal things I had been experiencing at the time. I remember the rich mental imagery the song also generated. I could clearly picture what it was like to be in the Brooklyn neighbourhood that Neil was singing about, smell the cooking of food on the stove and a father's warm embrace.

Interesting how quite a few people posted that this song made them cry. It did the same to me as well when it first came out. My dad died in September of 1969, (I was nine at the time) and I remember how much this song moved me even though I'm not from Brooklyn. It was shortly after my dad's death that, for some reason, this song made me want to learn to play guitar. I remember we had the album and I couldn't get enough of this song. I never learned how to read music and have always played by ear. I will always credit Neil Diamond and (in particular) "Brooklyn Roads" for giving me motivation for learning to play the guitar. At that time of my dad's death, his music literally saved my life during such a dark time. To this day whenever I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes, probably because of its timing, in my life, and its intense motivation for me to learn the guitar on my own and make me realise what a wonderful way it was to place my broken heart into something that could help me constructively direct my sorrow into something positive, if that makes sense. No artist has ever moved me like Neil Diamond. He is an amazingly talented poet and songwriter. I owe him so much and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

I understand some of how you feel. Not from Brooklyn either but my Papa passed just over 2 months ago and this helped me let the tears flow and flow and flow which was cleansing for me. I can not play yet but I am going to give it a try.

Similar situation here, Dad died in Jan. '70, I was 11. Brother died in June '73. Found Neil's album Stones at a friend's house in Aug. '73 and it saved my life. Took up writing--poetry, short fiction--trying to understand all the emotions swirling around in me. Wrote for years and years until the kids came along. Fast forward to 2018 and my son's total rejection of me, followed closely by my daughter's rejection. Been listening to Neil for the past 18 months and he has saved my life again. So many ways he touches me and lifts me up (even the "sad" songs). Started writing again...

Me and Neil are almost the same age, and both from the same area of Brooklyn. Somehow even 37 years after leaving Brooklyn for a better house on Long Island, Brooklyn never leaves you. Growing up in Brooklyn in the 50's and 60's was a romantic and exciting time. The music, the beautiful girls, and just something in the air that anyone who lived it can attest to it even though we can't explain it. From time to time I take the drive back to Brooklyn to see if some bit of the magic is still there. When I hear this song sung by Neil I feel what I know he feels. You can leave Brooklyn, but Brooklyn never leaves you. If you're a baby boomer who grew up in Brooklyn you know just what I mean. This song is very special to us and to Neil. Thanks Neil.

And today's young New Yorkers will already be storing up personal nostalgia for the 2021 city they'll describe so fondly, some day, to their grandchildren.

But as my mind walks through those places, I’m wondering what’s come of them. It’s amazing just how much we can reflect on at such an early age. I dedicate this song to humanity ❤️

As a child, my mother would play her Neil Diamond tapes and Brooklyn Roads would become a favourite as I grew older. I'm now 52 years old and will forever enjoy the memories of listening to a tape of music...

Love this song My favorite Neil Diamond song. Beautiful. haunting, nostalgic. This song never ever plays on the radio. Why? Conflicting release dates. 1967, 1968. If my memory serves me right I believe I remember listening on the radio in my High School graduating year of 1967 Brings me back and i'm not even from Brooklyn.
