Installing A Custom Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel For My MK5 Toyota Supra!

👋 Check out the new carbon fiber steering wheel for my manual Toyota Supra! This new wheel from GR Store has a flat bottom design, carbon fiber on the bottom with trim, white stitching and even a center stripe! In todays video I show how to remove your factory steering wheel from the MK5 Toyota Supra and replace it with an aftermarket steering wheel! Removing the steering wheel out of my 2023 Supra wasn't all too difficult. Hardest part is finding the springs to pop off the airbag. Once that's out it pretty easy disassembling the parts. I even replaced the airbag cover with a leather cover that has white contrast stitching with a gloss black Toyota badge! GR Store has a really nice selection of custom steering wheels in different color leather, alcantara, stitching options and carbon fiber pieces. I really like the smooth black leather I went with to match OEM. And the carbon fiber on the bottom matches perfect to the carbon fiber center console. The white stripe ties in the white stitching found in the Supra, and the steering wheel even says Supra on the bottom trim piece. The new leather airbag cover really ties it all togehter giving the Supra a sporty steering wheel! To replace the airbag cover you do need to careful pull the airbag itself out of the stock housing and make sure you keep it folded to fit in the new housing properly. The buttons on the stock wheel have two screws holding them in and then you can easily pull that whole piece off and transfer to the new steering wheel. Overall installing a new steering wheel on the Supra was pretty straight forward and I love the result! The GR Store steering wheel looks like an OEM quality product and really ads to the design of the Supra interior to make it even more sporty! They carry steering wheels for automatic Supras which will have cut out identical to factory for your paddle shifters, but you can also order a manual steering wheel which will be smooth on the backside.

Yeah I must say I wasn’t a huge fan of the Supra in black, and that blue wrap really transformed this car. That black blue mix is unique and looks amazing. It looks a bit like the blue from the Nissan Z.

There are open vents to replace them. But they don’t lead to anything, so they’d still be useless. I look at them as trim pieces

Yeah once I saw airbag covers available in leather, I feel like that really brings up the interior. Definitely worth the cost. Can always just order one from GR store to complete your wheel ;)

Nice man! Did you waning lights? We installed a shift indicator steering wheel on my 2021 Supra last year. I love it, but now my cruise control wont engage. Im thinking its not centered properly.

Oh cool! No warning lights on my car and all the buttons work perfect since they didn't get changed. Maybe you didn't plug everything in? There is only one way to put the wheel back on, so it should be centered. Might just need to adjust your tie rod ends to get your wheels straight

Quick question and not sure if you'll see this or respond.. i am thinking about purchasing one of these and was not sure as to why there is a almost cotton like area surrounding the back side of the horn emblem... I see that the cutouts are the same, but do you think that the aftermarket one not having this material could be dangerous in a collision?? Thanks!

Not too sure to be honest. That definitely a good point. The aftermarket one does have the same grooves in the plastic where the cover should rip apart. But wouldn't really know for sure unless it was tested

Hi there, the new wheel looks great. My only concern is whether the airbag will still work properly after putting it in the new housing. That bit of the process seemed a bit dodgy to me?

It shouldn't have any issues. Make sure you don't unpack the airbag and it will fit perfectly into the new one. Also the new airbag cover has the grooves cut in it that will rip apart for it to function. So there shouldn't be any issues

As long as you disconnected the battery it should be fine. They are designed to only go off if a charge is applied to the wires

Do you know why some models have the t60 torx bolt like yours and some have the 16mm bolt? I'm doing mine in a month and trying to gather all the right tools. Also, was the impact wrench not working well enough?

2023 has the torque bolt. For what ever reason they changed it for that year. Impact wrench didn't get it. Breaker bar was the only way I could get it off. Need a lot of grip on the wheel to hold it while someone else pushes the bar down

The torque spec for the steering wheel bolt is actually only 45lbs

If the new Nismo is only Auto, then that’s a big No from me 😅. 9 speed is not good in that car. If it’s got a manual I’m sure it’ll give the Supra a run! So we’ll see

There are little slots in the back you'll see. Poke right there. Yeah they are permanent holes, but its all rubber and they close back up for the most part and you'll never see them anyways since they are on the back

Not really actually. They are design to only go off when it gets the electronic signal or some charge to the connections. Once unplugged, as long as you dont touch a batter to exposed wires, your good.

Next time pull the negative off, not the positive. Also, don't insert the airbag while the system is charged. That was dangerous.

Pulling the negative off won't really do anything. Taking the positive is what takes power out of the car. I didn't reconnect the battery till the airbag was plugged in. Once it's plugged in it won't go off unless the car gets an impact

The leather airbag cover and carbon accent look cool, but the rim looks like it came out of a tacky and cheesy batmobile, the original with the center cover would probably look more stylish and classy, and better made for sure
