I noticed my Brother MFC-9330CDW color printouts became fainter & had low color saturation. Black text came out grey. The toner levels were getting low & I assumed the generic cartridges were the reason as I noticed poor output over the past year (retired & don’t print much). I thought about purchasing OEM brother cartridges but at 60 to 70 bucks x 4 cart. a pop, I hesitated. Couple of days ago I had a phantom paper jam and opened the printer up and pull out everything that I could but didn’t find any jam. After removing & replacing the toner cartridges I noticed the printouts much brighter, with better color saturation & the greyish text now appears black. I believe over time the toner settled in the cartridge. Removing & shaking the cartridge fluffed up the toner ink giving me very nice printouts.

I tried to block the holes with post-it notes and it still says low toner.

I consider it useful advice if the alternate cartridge has enough better value at the time you need to order.

If it solely based on optics how does the toner level sensor know when to alert you to a low cartridge vs an empty one. Is it based on how much light passes thru the window? Someone said it also calculates based on the number of pages printed.

Since I ordered this brand of printer I've read some words calling out the company for scamming because toner would yield a fraction of advertised output. Not sure if it's truth or a variable between misunderstanding something and printers misreading levels by deliberate design or flaw.

Newer models don't use the optical window method, but it may be just as annoying. You can reset the counter on your toner (admin function) or use the "continue mode" which is available on the "toner" menu itself on some Brother printers. If it goes solely by optics for reading the level, what's the chip for?

I don't know what the chip does, but the trick he describes for getting more use out of printer cartridge by blocking the optical sensor certainly works. I have used this technique on a Brother HL 2140 several times. There do not seem to be any bad consequences.

I have the TN-630 I swear it never came close to 1300 pages since i popped it in. After removing it, it continues to leak black paint every single time i touch it.

I have a 2350DW. Toner still barely used. It'll be a long time before I try it. Thanks for letting me know. I hope it's true. It's nonsense to waste so much toner or ink just because the printer brand wants to profit from forcing you to resupply early and then update their designs to make it harder to get generic brands of ink or toner to work.

From the same cartridge? It might be possible if the chip measures toner use per page, he used a lot per page before doing this and then printed text only in a more conservative mode.

If you have a pocket magnifier, you can print nine or sixteen document pages per side of 8.5 x 11 paper. I don't know the resolution needed. At 1200hq DPI I can print 16 and read it. That will save a lot of paper and toner. If I print nine, I can read it as quickly as normal size without a magnifier.
