This movie came out on DVD around the same time as Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. I was trying to find Jin-Roh but every store I asked for it would say "did you mean Brotherhood of the wolf?". About 10 years later I actually wanted to buy brotherhood of the wolf but it had kind of faded into obscurity, and everytime I ask someone at a store if they had a copy they would say, "did you mean Jin-Roh: the wolf brigade?"

i'm french, my father is really fascinated by "la bête du gévaudan" he explain to me few facts of the story when i was younger. Many authors write books and comics ( some with scientific/investigation process for debunk the mistery, some just for entertainments ). We still don't know what was this beast, the most commons theories : it was well trained dog with an armor, a hyenna or lion who escaped from a medieval fair or just a huge wolf It seems the movie decide to mix things. the fake beast who receive the king in Paris is a true fact, if i have a good memory. gg from France, nice channel !

Heard the bête du gévaudan is actually multiple wolves and they thought it was one animal being immortal and would always come back. It seems a bit farfetched, but the possibility of an entire legend being an exaggerated hunting story is also pretty funny.

This reminds me of so many tales and folklore stories surrounding large black wolves/dogs spreading chaos during the wintermonths. Turned out to be wolfpacks or feral dog packs on every investigation so far. Few instance of escaped circus bears too, but those usually got resolved rather quickly. I mean, it´s like the austrian lindwurm, which has been proven to have been thought up after peasants found mammoth bones while working the fields. The bones have been on display for centuries, a few decades ago not dna but something similiar tests resulted in it being confirmed a woolmamoth. Still for centuries the people of that area belived a dragonlike worm creature was hunting them and they claimed to have killed multiple of them too.
@NefariousKoel
@NefariousKoel Жыл бұрын
I lean more towards the escaped lion or, perhaps, hyena explanation. The beast of Gevaudan was always spotted hunting & attacking alone. Wolves are pack hunters. As are hyenas, but I suppose if a hyena got loose in Europe, it wouldn't be able to find a pack to hang with. The beast also attacked mostly women and children via ambush. Which also fits the M.O. of a lion. There are other things, such as eyewitness mention of it's long tail and being much larger than wolves. Foreign beasts, such as lions, were also occasionally a vanity pet of the European rich at the time. Which hasn't been unheard of even in modern times, nor one of them getting loose and returning feral.

I love when Marianne's goofy poet suitor recites his poem at the dinner table and then howls. It is so funny in the dubbed version. How embarrassing for him. I love both the dubbed version and the original French version. When turning someone new onto the film I always suggest watching it in its original French version instead of or before the overdubbed one. This is one of my all-time favorite films of any genre. My obsession with the Beast of Gevaudan and my love for actor Mark Dacascos definitely helped make this a really special film for me.
@tunguskalumberjack9987
@tunguskalumberjack9987 Жыл бұрын
@@mermaid_at_heart213 Right on! I was also very taken with the Gevaudan story from a very young age, due to it’s inclusion in a book about werewolf legends and their origins that I borrowed from the library. I was bullied a lot as a kid, and I have a vivid memory of some kids my age chasing me through the woods one night after a school function. The book I had been reading about werewolves had a segment of a “spell” that, if said in conjunction with applying an ointment of some pretty strange ingredients, would turn the one speaking it into a werewolf. I was crying and trying to remember all of it so that I could fight back against them, but 1. I couldn’t remember it all, 2. I didn’t have the ointment, and 3. It was a magic spell to turn a person into a werewolf. Of course it wasn’t going to work 😆. But I wanted it to very badly- Anyway, I was always a voracious reader, and the Beast Of Gevaudan was much more appealing to me than the “werewolf legends” about Peter Stubbe and others, because it was a real story, apart from the wild exaggerations and embellishments. Mark Dacascos was great in it, and I think he brought a lot of coolness to his character, as much as Vincent Cassel brought menace to his. I remember at the time, my ex made a comment about the tattoos that Mani had on his torso, and doubted that Native Americans had anything like that. However, I pulled out my copy of ReSearch’s book “Modern Primitives” (which was super popular with anyone interested in piercing and tattoo back in the ‘90s), turned to the section that detailed Native American tattoos and skin designs, and there was a drawing of the exact design and placement of Mani’s. I was a little surprised that it was so exact, because I didn’t remember it being so, but the filmmaker must have used it directly from the book, as it’s 100% the same. Brotherhood Of The Wolf is definitely a favorite movie of mine, and though I’ve only convinced one other person to watch it so far, my stepsons are big Bloodborne fans, and I think that’s what is going to help me get them to watch it. Fingers crossed! Sorry for such a long message, but thanks for your comment 👍🏻 “Oo-loo! Oo-loo! Oo-loo!”

I think the speculation is that the Beast was possibly an escaped zoo/menagerie animal (like a hyena or in the movie's case, a fucked up lion), a hybrid wolf-dog, a big intellgient wolf, or a series of unconnected wolf attacks by different groups of animals that the peasantry all attributed to one creature. King Louis XV (the one who got his head chopped off) sent a bunch of soldiers to the scour the countryside and find the beast because the story was so sensational, and that seemed to stop it.

It was multiple big wolf packs. Something similiar happened in Finnland during WW2. Stories started telling tales of a maneating giant wolve, turned out it was a giant pack of wolves that had become aggressive and kept hunting scout groups and patrols. It was so large and rabid that it had to be exterminated by combined efforts of soviet and finnish troops (who actually agreed on a ceasefire for the time to hunt the pack down)

As a french individual and translator, I will do my best to attempt to detail the pronunciation of each french word and name mentioned in this video! Gévaudan -> Jeh-Vo-Dan (For the Dan, think more as in the way it's pronounced in Dante) Grégoire De Fronsac -> Greg-woah-r Duh Fron-Sac Paris -> Pah-ree (the s is silent) Auvergne -> Oh-Vehr-nyuh (very very soft nyuh sound) Dordogne -> Dor-Doh-nyuh (same soft nyuh sound, gne is a tricky, barely pronounced sound) Jean-François -> Jan Fran-soah (Elvis pronounced it well, both "an" sounds are also the same as in the name Dante) Marquis -> Mar-key (Pronounced correctly there too, the s is silent, this is not really a name as much as a nobility title. It's odd that they call him by title without a name behind it) Cuirasse -> Cuee-Rahss It's worth nothing that the Beast of Gévaudan is a very well known tale in France even today, taught in our schools!

Thank you for reviewing this film and turning new people onto it. Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups) is a masterpiece. It is one of my favorite films of all-time, of any genre. The acting in it is superb and the action scenes are fantastic and creative. The slow-motion spots and filming techniques are artistic and add to the film's uniqueness, in my opinion. Mani is my favorite character in this film. I adore Mark Dacascos in all of the roles I've seen him in. He is so talented and goes above and beyond in his craft. The other actors are also top-notch and their chemistry in Brotherhood is apparent, with a very natural feel. The Beast is awesome, and at the end you really feel for it; poor thing. The wolf slaughter is heartbreaking, especially knowing that it actually happened in real life. I cannot say enough good things about Le Pacte des Loups. Watch it in its original French version. If you really enjoy it and go back for a second watch in French (I can't imagine not enjoying it) watch it again in the English dubbed version afterwards. It's a bit silly in parts and quite enjoyable in its own right. I would suggest doing some research on the real-life Beast of Gevaudan, as well, if that's your sort of thing. The actual events are quite interesting, to say the least. I've never played Bloodborne, as I stopped playing video games years ago, due to issues with my hands. It sounds like I really missed out. I'm tempted to try because it seems like it's right up my alley. Brotherhood is a perfect film to adapt into a video game, for sure!

As a kid in France, the beast of Gévaudan terrorised me. It's creepy because the story is very real, there was an 'unusual' beast that killed up to a few hundred people. The attacks were quite documented. Unfortunately one of the so called 'catch' was destroyed during the French revolution. The region no longer exists per its name btw. Recent theories assume it was a big cat on the loose. Nevertheless, when I heard about the story aged 6 from people keen on sharing folklore stories, it definitively scared me. The movie is really lousy as per current standards but back in the days it was cool to see a French movie with a little bit of action (we have never been able to produce such shit in two decades, it's mostly boring comedies and bourgeois dramas about rich people questioning the sense of life, all heavily subsidised by our taxes).

He tried so hard! That was cute. lol English is my first language, but I'm pretty good with pronunciations. I'm not fluent, but I know a bit of a few other languages (You pick stuff up watching a LOT of foreign films) and I grew up speaking Cuban Spanish. It doesn't hurt that I soak up any lore of the Beast of Gevaudan that I can find.

First off…. Monica Bellucci…. Holy goodness. Second. Some of the best fights I’ve seen in movies. The rampage Gregoire goes on after a tragedy is incredible. Finally for this comment. My wife and I rented this visiting her family in Montreal and the French is actually French Canadian. Dope freaking movie.

It's funny that you mentioned the animal thing, I'll bet that's exactly what it was, They're extreme regulations on how long an individual animal can remain on set, They probably only had access to the one goat and then a sheep that look somewhat like it.

Hi Elvis! love the video and exposure for this great film. I now must recommend "Dobermann" from 1997 which has Cassell and Bellucci in a completely off the rails action masterpiece! Strong R! I hope someone reading this will enjoy!

I'm a bit sad you didn't talk a bit about the sound design of the movie, but perhaps it's not as readily apparent in EngDub, or as striking nowadays, but it seems to be the movie which invented what we now know as "the Inception drone", and uses it so often it's like it was made for drinking games.

-Bro that kickstarter project looks amazing - I know this doesn’t really matter as an individual message coming from a singular person, but I am totally saving up to help you!!! I’m A little broke rn but I am so excited at the thought of helping, and I’m also passing the word on to my sister, who loves a variety of games, including bloodborne. I can say I’ve personally played it (I’m unbelievably terrible at videogames ;-;) but I am a huge fan of you, have watched a lot of videos (including yours) on bloodborne lore, and love drawing and artwork, so I’m just super excited to help. Im so excited to see your final product as well, it sounds like it’s gonna be amazing.
