I love how Bloodborne in particular makes you realize after you’ve struggled and overcome foe after foe that none of it matters in the grand scheme of things and you can’t meaningfully change anything. I think that kind of existential hopelessness is a key part of cosmic horror
@wr5488
@wr5488 Жыл бұрын
You do change quite a bit! No more Church, their blood source is killed. (Ebreitas) No more eternal hell for the hunters, the source of the nightmare is slain. (Orphan) No more ‘Every Great One loses their child’, the cosmic predator is killed. (Moon) The actual town is screwed to hell and back regardless, but you DO save future Great One infants from being slaughtered in future hunts, you stop the eternal suffering of the hunters and you prevent the atrocities of the church from continuing (like literally harvesting children)

@@spimbles Story is phenomenal but you have to read/explore/piece things together. But I will say out of all the Souls type games its the only one that answers all of its questions. Theres a reason for almost everything. Theres a 140ish page book on the story. (The Paleblood Hunt I believe?) Just kinda like a summary of the lore, but it works waaaaaaay better if you play the games first so you know what is being explained. Story is crazy simple on one hand and really complex on another. But its great!! They really do tie EVERYTHING up.

@@wr5488 Yeah it's interesting Bloodborne honestly sometimes only aesthetically feels like cosmic horror, the fact we are able to see and hunt and even become a great one is not very cosmic at all. Redgrave also points out how we can clearly discern the motivations and rivalries between the great ones in an ethological sense, making them out to be just monstrous creatures just very, very far up the food chain.

The lighthouse is definitely Robert Eggars love letter to old school sea captains and Neptune mythology. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe each give performances of their careers here, it’s very hard to pick a favorite between the two in this movie.
The underlying themes and story that isn’t flat out said is pretty interesting and worth investing some research after viewing this film. Every single item in this movie is accurate to the time period, along with accents that both actors “made up” for this movie, combining different old foreign languages together.
If The Northman is Robert Eggars Magnum Opus film, then this is 100% his most underrated gem of a film.
It’s weird, it’s in black and white, and there is a lot of metaphorical speeches given by the actors. It all comes together to give us a great mystery movie as well as a super original psychological Thriller.

omg so happy you mentioned possession - it's one of my favourite movies. I just love the slow build up and how it suddenly shifts from family drama to surrealist horror. @Hawk7886 Жыл бұрын
I have no idea how you'd label that movie one of your favorites.The US theatrical release was edited so poorly it's nearly unwatchable, and the "director's cut" found today is still a difficult watch. The brief bits of actual cosmic horror to be found pales in comparison to the nonstop screaming matches shared by the leads. It's headache inducing and the worst sort of drama; like a drunk schizophrenic arguing with their reflection in the window of a packed city bus stuck in gridlocked traffic. I understand why it's considered a cult classic, but I'd be more than happy if I never watch it again. As a 90s kid, the best way I could describe it would be like finding an unlabeled VHS tape in the attic and putting it into the living room player, only to discover it was a very private home movie your parents made years ago. Sure, my curiosity was satisfied, but I don't feel like it was worth it.

It’s not a movie or video game, but I HIGHLY recommend the comic series by Jeff Smith, Bone. It starts out friendly and unassuming, but devolves into a very very grim and dark story. There’s lots of lovecraftian elements, especially in the later half of the story. The designs of some of the monsters are extremely chilling.

Im surprised you didn’t bring up “pontypool” where a few radio show hosts are stuck at their station while a zombie apologizes happens. The thing that makes it cosmic to me is that its not a typical zombie apocalypse but some word is activating it, but the radio show hosts have to report whats going on with also trying not to activate more infected people. I haven’t watched it in a while but I totally recommend it cause it leaves you wondering how it even works

coherence was one of those films i saw recommended on imdb depending on what type of movie i like. it was on shutter island or triangle, or one of those movies. i had no idea what to expect it was amazing. first off, it legit just looks and feels like a normal everyday conversation. the actors ad libbing, improving, and definitely not having scripted conversations is gripping from the start, their lives and how they're connected start unfolding, and then the weird shit starts happening and OH MY GOD there's not a chance anyone can see whats coming i know i didnt

If you’re gonna make another list include Iron lung, it’s a game where you are confined to a small submarine, having to navigate it in one of 4 mysterious blood oceans found on separate moons, it takes place into the future after an event called “the quiet rapture” where all habitable planets and stars vanish with no explanation, the only remaining people are the ones who were living on space stations or lunar colonies, searching for answers and other life, or just anything that can sustain them, with the light of dead stars being the only thing that they can use to navigate

I think 2 games that really fits this style is Observation, you play as the AI of a space crew, as you try to get the last astronaut safe, while trying to figure out what happened to the rest of the crew, it was interesting as hell. And there's a series of cellphone games called Lifeline, the main ones are about a stranded astronaut who is being chased by something, it's mostly text messages but the story is so good. Really good video :)!

BTW, one really good (and disturbing) piece of cosmic horror that I wanted to add was a Japanese visual novel called Song of Saya (aka Saya No Uta). It’s very disturbing and definitely NSFW, but it’s also very moving and will stick with you for a long time after it’s done. Highly recommended for any fan of cosmic horror - who’s willing to endure song seriously NSFW scenes, that is. The original was even censored in places! You’ve been warned!

Cosmic horror is the best in the horror genre. The fear of the unknown is truly horrifying especially cthulu mythos. Science tries to explain everything but then wat happens when science or rational thinking can't explain all the weird crap that happens. Although he was 'racist' his work was so amazing that i looked past his bigotry towards others. Hp Lovecraft was a genius to even create a language that even other famous Arthur's couldn't pronounce is mind blowing. Thank u so much Elvis for uploading this video on my FAVORITE GENRE😍😍😍 Hope to see more of ur uploads oh and think u can do a review about superdeep if you've seen it. I can’t even remember where I first heard about Event Horizon, it sure as hell wasn’t in cinemas when it came out, I was born in 2002 lol. But as an art student, I became absolutely obsessed with it, mostly the architecture of the ship. Something about the style of the ship, as well as the story and the fate that befell the crew, absolutely drew me in. I’ve had an obsession with those 90s and pre 2000s horror movies, the way they used gore in a way that feels different to post 2000s gore. It doesn’t feel like it’s all for shock value, it somehow feels like it ties it into a pretty bow to the end of the story, not only was I drawn in by the concept of visiting different galaxies, but a ship traveling so far that it visited hell? You absolutely HOOKED me! I love seeing people play with such concepts, see what they make of it, and what extremes they want to take it to! As long as Event Horizon is available on Amazon Prime Mexico, I shall continue to watch it And also a huge fan of Annihilation! Now that you reminded me, gonna watch it again tomorrow then!
