If Princess Margaret really said “Poor Elizabeth nothing of your own, not even your love affair.” She would have been the one to know and it adds another of sadness to the Queen saying “I don’t own the palaces, I don’t own the paintings and now they’ve even taken my name.” How deeply tragic.

I have a lot of respect for Phillip. Till he married Elizabeth - or perhaps till he made it to Gordonston - he had a truly tragic life. Born Prince of Greece AND Denmark, but by 18 months old he’s being passed around by relatives all over Europe - no home, no parents, pretty much orphaned. And that went on for years. His “will you walk if I go with you” has a lot more resonance when you know his early life story. You can also see where his passion for youth self improvement & resilience came from. I know he & Elizabeth had some turbulence after her accession when I feel like he didn’t know what to do with himself anymore after having to resign his naval commission. But it feels like they came back together with the creation of Andrew and remained devoted to one another for the rest of their lives. Harry could learn a lot about resilience from reading about his grandfather’s history. He likely feels he knew the man, but does he know what made Phillip, Phillip?

You never learn what made your parents until you actually “learn” what made your parents. My father was cruel and abusive. He beat me with a leather whip. I was 28 when I was working with his cousin. He told me my Pop was beaten with a log chain. Broke my heart. I realized my Pop was being the best father he knew to be. I was then able to forgive him and we had wonderful years I cherish. You don’t want to know what happened to my grandpa as a child. It was truly horrific. True understanding gives you freedom.

No wonder Harry always thought he coul do as he liked after his mother (allegedly) even told him "You can be naughty. Just don’t get caught". We are talking about a man thrust into the position of king, when he never expected it. He had terrible insecurities caused by his father, as well as the stutter. I'm sure George VI probably felt the uniforms were some kind of armor that gave him some security and helped put him forward as a leader. I have always had a lot of sympathy for him. He loved his daughters and did his duty. Loving his daughters was easy. Asking Britain to stand up to the Luftwaffe was not.

I viewed almost every documentary on the royals. I watched one of the wedding of Elizabeth & Philip. They said that people gave their ration stamps of flour and sugar to make their cake. I can’t find it now and current ones are not stating this. Several nylon stockings were sent as wedding gifts since those were rationed as well. Funny how little things are being either edited out or just not mentioned any more. Thanks for your videos. 🥹

I have one sister, couple of years older than me. As a child, I adored her... wanted to do, look, BE her in every way. Mom made some of our clothes and she would pick the same pattern fabric but in different color schemes to encourage that sisterly relationship. I'll have to ask my sister if it rubbed her the wrong way. I don't think so. Anyway, when Sister and I were packing mom's home after she passed away, we found a couple of those little girl clothes. Yes, the tears flowed and flowed. She was (is?) a treasure in our hearts, forever.

I think he saw Megan as his way to take the world by the storm all on his own without the royal backing. He was wrong of course. I think Harry and Megan realized they could do more damage together than apart. And Harry always resented William and was jealous of him.

Quite a chapter with many pieces to add to the Royal Family tapestry. I like that you highlighted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s trip to the US in 1939. Under her white designer made wardrobe,Elizabeth and George had an extremely important job to do. As ambassadors for the United Kingdom they were not above espionage either. They had to convince the President and the American people to help them as they faced Adolf Hitler. Interesting that Elizabeth played that role to perfection, hiding the real purpose of the visit under her beautiful hats. Then the other highlight that stands out for me is how Princess Elizabeth had to be taught humility by her grandmother Queen Mary. Lastly, Prince Philip is quite a character. His youth was difficult and it sounds like his adulthood was planned out by his uncle Louis Mountbatten. All very interesting.

@sheilathompson1026 3 ай бұрын
Yes you could, most working class people did not have land though. Like lots of the men my Dad joined up at the beginning of the war so most men were away. I know where my mum and her neighbours lived there were very often air raids at night so the children would have to be taken out of bed and taken to an air raid shelter even when they were ill with things like chicken pox so childhood illnesses must have spread like crazy. I remember her telling me while we were watching an old war film called Mildred Pierce (and bombs were dropping) that the whistle the bomb made still made her blood run cold even after all those years because you never knew where it would land or if you would have a home to go back to. I wasn’t born until after the war so I don’t remember but my sister remembered everyone queuing for everything until the shop sold out then you went home empty handed. I don’t know what it says about rationing on the internet, I just remember my Mum and sister saying there were shortages of everything for the poorer people who either refused to buy black market goods or had no money for them

I may have to re-read Kitty's book. The sordid side of Dickie seems to have roots in Mountbatten family history. I'm enjoying your reading. I only wish the videos were posted more often than once a week. A cute story from "Little Princesses" (my library had the audiobook!) about the girls getting a Girl Guides scout troop started at Windsor. Margaret was almost too young to join but Lilibet told her to "lift your skirt and show her your legs. You see, she's got strong legs and is not at all afraid to get dirty!"

Kitty Kelly always chooses and underlines the nastiest /gossipiest/ most sensational side of the stories she collected. So, I am really not very impressed by the accuracy or seriousness of her research. She says she interviewed hundreds of people for her book. That might be so. But reading the book, I have the impression Kelly focussed on the gossip, rather than trying to go for the maximum of accuracy or objectivity. Everyone was keen to get as much food as tbey coukd. However George VI painted lines on the bathtubs to limit the amount of water used so I woukd have thought that he woukd have aimed to worj with ration requirements.
