I love the Whippoorwill. I always said that as long as you can hear a Whippoorwill calling, you know everything is alright, because they are a ground bird. If something was out there I don't think they would be. At least that's my take on it.

That sounds so good too. Now I don't know which one to cook LOL I think I'm going to do navy beans with the dumplings first cause the only greens I have are those old store bought canned mixed greens. They are pretty good as a quick side with some fried cornbread but I want some good turnips to do what you are talking about. I won't be able to get good fresh turnips locally until the fall after we have a frost but I won't forget to try this. Thank you. God's blessings on you and your family 💜

I just finished up a pot of (as we always called them) dark beans! I made it with a big ole ham bone and a 2 pound bag of beans. I do love white beans (we just called those beans) cooked the same way. Always have to have chopped fresh onion, corn bread, and a few fresh cayenne peppers with my beans, just like one of my grandmas used to eat. Thank you for the love and kindness you share with us.

During one of those lean times when my kids were small, I cooked plenty of beans. So many things you can do with them. I throw in tomatoes, kale, onions, carrots, celery, whatever I have on hand. Anyway I had cooked beans, cheese and bread on hand. I made grilled bean and cheese sandwiches. It became a family favorite. They still love them and so do the the grandkids. 🤗❤

Soaking the beans in water overnight eliminates the enzymes. It unlocks the nutrients in the beans so your body can absorb them. We heard that bird for the first time two nights ago. We didn’t know what it was but I could tell he was saying whippoorwill. ❤️

born and raised central ky on Ky mountain cooking. We had pinto beans a least once a week with cornbread. Mom canned what I now , from another state, call chow chow. My family called it green tomato ketchup. We never had any other legumes other than pinto's. My grandmother lived 200 yrds from us and she would only cook navy beans and no pinto's. In all my country cooking environments (church potlucks, etc) I have never heard of corn dumplings. We had a lot of baked cornbread and sometimes fried cornbread if we were having fried fish, but never dumplings. Thanks for teaching me something. We seldom called them pinto's. Rarely we called them brown beans. Most often we all called them soup beans which implied pinto's. I always chop up a large onion into my beans. Since moving 600 miles from my family and experimenting with other cultures of cuisine, I challenge you to look up Mexican pork and beans. Many in Mexican culture have pork and beans on Fridays. They use black beans and cube a pork shoulder or boston butt into 1" squares and cook just as you would pinto beans. I usually cook on medium maybe 3 hrs. Add some cumin and chili powder and a jalepeno. Ive even thrown in a can of chipotle tomatoes w peppers. You mentioned a next day leftover cold bean sandwich. Ive never heard of that either. Please explain.

My mom used to season collards with fatback & add little cornmeal dumplins flattened out...talk about good! There's just something about the taste of the fatback with the dumplins & collards that give it that special taste...add just enough sugar to give collards a hint of sweetness & a wee bit of pepper vinegar & it's perfect!

When I married my husband in 1974 I didnt know that families made a meal out of a pot of beans or a pan of gravy and some bread. I didnt grow up with those meals. My husband loved pinto beans but also white beans over fried potatoes with raw onions on top so I had to learn to cook that, I soon loved them too. My kids never did catch on to them. I retired from work in 2017 and stayed home to take care of my husband whose health was failing, he went to be with Jesus on 12/26/18. I loved this video, thank you for bringing back good memories.

My family always farmed, my parents were the first to work city jobs. I spent Summer breaks and every Thanksgiving on my Grandfather's farm. Guess that's why I love watching country and hill folk cook so much. Blessings to ya'll :)

I haven’t seen this recipe in years. My grandmother would make this recipe for my parents and my brother and me when she would come for a visit. Yes she would make the best bean sandwich my brother and I loved them.

I will be making this! My dad could eat pintos and cornbread everyday. He would take the cornbread and crumble it into milk. Well, I'm 59 now and I tried it for the first time a year ago. So good! Great memories of my dad. I love your channel, so comforting and especially during times like this. Love you both!

I have never, ever had success with dumplings ! And I so love them, so it's depressing. I think your recipe, and hints on size and consistency ,and length of cooking is the key. I can't wait to try it out.

Paddy Redinger When I first got married (almost 40 years ago now!) my husband wanted chicken & dumplings. We saw a recipe somewhere that called for using canned biscuits for dumplings. It was so easy and we’ve always used them for dumplings. Any brand will do - tear each biscuit into 4 pieces and put them in the pot. Cover the pot and let them simmer for 15 mins. Don’t remove the cover until the 15 mins is up. They’re delish!

I like the way you measure your teaspoons Ms. Lori : ) I have never tried cornbread dumplings but they must go so well with the beans. Although I used to love adding ham hocks, I no longer eat pork but I think the vegetarian version would be just fine too.

One of our favorite meals, but I've never made the cornmeal dumplings. I'm going to do that tomorrow for Cinco de mayo. I think I will make some tacos or enchiladas too. Beans go with everything in this house. lol Love your videos and it's been nice seeing you more often Miss Lori.

I was given a couple of ham hocks a while back, and because I didn't know how or what to do with them, I put them in the freezer. Out of sight, out of mind sort of thinking. Well during this lockdown I thought I should sort out the freezer and bring the older food to the top. I came across the ham hocks and thought I need to use these but wasn't sure what to do. Not a week later Ms Lori brings out this recipe. I'm sure this is the recipe I'm supposed to use and it will be just wonderful as we're in winter here in New Zealand, and this looks like great comfort food. I haven't been brought up using dried beans in cooking either, so this whole recipe is going to be a steep learning curve for me, wish me luck. Blessings from New Zealand. Stay safe and well everyone -Katy xx

My Grandmother (my Fathers Mother) used to make brown beans and dumplins, so that was the way I was raised to eat them and thought everyone did the same. Also my Mothers Mom...My Grandmother Ginny used to eat cold bean sandwiches and I learned to love them as well. It is so good to see others out in the world that carry on the same traditions!!!
