On today's episode of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, five kids compete for the right to sign The Coveted Trophy Pin. This week's field was a combined group of Bigs and Littles, and only the Littles received any handicap at all. But it was just a fraction of what they're used to getting -- just 60% of the difference between their league average and 200. They're bowling on a demanding sport condition, so the Bigs in the field had better bring their A-game, because they'll have a hard time duplicating their league average.

So randy back to the bowling balls. I really like the fever pitch, the hammer purple is nice as well, and I decided to go with the high road. All are working very well for me. Earlier, someone posting under the name *2TON* left a comment, which sent me off on a long journey to get an answer. But now, I can't find his comment anywhere. He apparently took it down. So let me quote him here. He wrote: "Hey Randy, at 32:38 you said that throwing the ball with 2 hands placed on the ball while being thrown from the side would mean the shot wouldn't count, I was wondering if you could show where it says that in the rules..." After reading his comment, I went looking for it in the rules and didn't have much more success than he did in finding it. It's kind of hidden in the rules. In fact, it isn't in the Playing Rules under "Legal Delivery." It's in the Equipment Specifications and requires a bit of mental gymnastics to unravel the meaning of a "Two-Handed Delivery" versus a "Two-Handed Approach." (They are different.) So rather than trying to figure out what they meant, I got hold of someone in the Rules Department at USBC for the answer. First of all, I didn't say such a delivery "wouldn't count." I said "it would not be a legal delivery." Which is true. Here's why: Just like you can't switch from right-handed to left-handed in the same game (you have to establish a separate average with each hand for handicap purposes), you also can't switch from a Two-Handed Approach to a Two-Handed Delivery in the same game. To understand why, you first have to know the difference between them. According to USBC nomenclature, a "Two Handed Approach" is what Jason Belmonte does. It's what all the two-handers we know and love are doing. It's what little Josh Greenberg and Hunter Moffitt and Rowan Sautner are doing on PRODIGY. By definition, a "Two Handed Approach" is where the player has both hands on the ball through the approach, but then the non-dominant hand comes off the ball just before the player releases the ball with his dominant hand. The "Two-Handed Approach" is a ONE-HANDED RELEASE. Then there is the "Two Handed Delivery." This is something altogether different. It's where a player releases the ball with both hands on it at release. It is a TWO-HANDED RELEASE. Where we see this most often is when a player rocks the ball between their legs with both hands and releases it from between their legs. In some cases, we see player release the ball from their chest, pushing the ball out on to the lane like a basketball pass. In most cases, a player does the "Two Handed Delivery" from the center of their body, from between their legs or from their chest. These two distinctly different styles are defined in the USBC's "Equipment Specifications" manual. I noticed while doing the play-by-play (and before that while editing the video) that Josh occasionally gets his right hand so far around the side of the ball and doesn't release it until well into his follow-thru (upswing) that his left hand is still on it when his right hand releases it. By definition, when both hands come off the ball at the same time, it is a "Two Handed Delivery" (two-handed release). And just like you can't switch from a right-handed to a left-handed delivery in the same game, you also can't switch from a one-handed release (Two Handed APPROACH) and a two-handed release (Two Handed DELIVERY) in the same game. It is a violation of the rules. That's what I was trying to convey in my comment in the play-by-play that 2TON was asking about. It was a fair question, and I've spent the better part of the day chasing down this rather complicated answer. I wish he'd left his comment up so I could respond to it. But hopefully he'll see it here. When doing play-by-play, it's often very difficult to explain complex things, because the action is happening so fast, and you want to describe what's happening right now. This was one of those things that might have been better left unsaid, as my comment likely raised more questions than it answered. But at least it did give me the opportunity to chase down the answer in great detail and share it here. Hopefully someone will find it interesting.

Rowan gets all the speed out of his delivery when he ends up facing the wall. Kids all try to throw the ball as hard as they can. In his case it works pretty decent. Junior bowling usually bowls an easier oil pattern but they did pretty good on the adult oil pattern.

I try to get these kids to "stick the landing," meaning to finish in balance. But it's a work in progress, for sure. With the little kids, many of them start way back at the back of the approach and take big steps, basically running up to the foul line to generate the speed they need to create some decent pin action. As they get bigger and stronger, I suspect we'll be working on slowing them down a bit, which will likely better enable them to finish in balance. (And facing the pins, not the right wall.)

This is proof that the 2-handed game may actually be what gets bowling in the Olympics. Seeing the ball hook and being able to score higher, plus you get to emulate the best bowler by major titles of this generation, equals kids enjoying and playing this sport. Taking the 2-handed delivery away from the sport would eliminate these kids from wanting to play at such an earlier age. And supposedly it’s the ‘lack of youth participation’ that was cited as the reason Bowling didn’t make the 2020 Olympics. Also, the narrator did a WONDERFUL job! I can tell he loves the sport and this tour. The way these kids were rolling the ball, I see why there were some complaints of handicap. The only thing I’d recommend is capping the handicap at maybe 25 pins. That way the younger kids are challenged to bowl a little stronger than their league averages suggest. After all this is a major tournament.

TJPlays GAMEZ - Then you should think about coming that last Saturday before the 4th of July when we’ll do the 3rd Annual Adult/Youth Scotch Doubles 9 Pin No Tap. Kids and adults will compete in separate divisions and the top five in each division will be paired with the corresponding qualifier from the other division - 1 with 1, 2 with 2, and so on - in a five team stepladder of doubles pairings. You might get paired with your dad, or you might end up paired with some other grownup bowling against your dad. This is always a fun event.

We’ll have the GYBT TOC the first weekend, then the PRODIGY Team Invitational the next week, we’ll take the weekend off on 6/15, then the PRODIGY TOC the next weekend (you gave to have won on PRODIGY this season to be eligible, and then the last Saturday in June (the last Saturday before the 4th of July), we’ll hold our final event of the season, the Adult/Youth Scotch Doubles 9 Pin No Tap. Your parents will be eligible to bowl that one. You’ll need to bring them anyway, as they’ll have to sign a release form granting me permission to photograph and videotape you.

I absolutely hate handicap.... I shot a 752 scratch series in a handicap tourney and still got 2nd to a kid that shot a 350 scratch 😑

I know. No scratch player likes bowling against handicap players. I get it. But the fact is, when you have a small field and there aren't enough players to justify breaking the field into two divisions, you have a choice to make: do you simply tell the littles, "We're going to take your money and you're going to have exactly zero chance of winning," or do you try to give them a fighting chance by spotting them some pins. I just can't see how it would be fair in the least NOT to give them some pins in that situation. If we had enough kids bowling to give us enough for two divisions, I'll break them into two divisions every time. But when the field is too small to do that, I feel like my hands are tied. In the case of this week's event, we dropped the handicap all the way down to 60% of the difference between their league average and 200. We usually use 90% of the diff. So the scratch bowlers really didn't have much to complain about this time. But that didn't stop them from complaining. And I understand. When someone bowls in the low 100s and edges you out, it's maddening. But when you're supposedly a "scratch" player and you're shooting in the 130s, what do you expect?

@William Rivera -- This episode was recorded THREE MONTHS AGO. It's Episode 89. We just recorded Episode 100 a couple of days ago. And you're just now commenting on this? Believe me, I have moved on long ago from this, so I don't really know what you're referencing. But by your ALL CAPS (SHOUTING) COMMENT, I must assume you're scolding me for calling a messenger some other pin besides the head pin. First, let me say this: About 99 percent of all messengers are, indeed, the head pin. But there are some messengers -- you could justifiably call them the result of freakish pin action -- that take out the 10 pin with something OTHER THAN the head pin. It does happen. It's somewhat unusual when it does, but it does happen. Since I don't know specifically what shot you're referring to here, and I'm busy editing the latest show and don't feel inclined to go back and re-watch this whole show to find the one shot that you're questioning my commentary on, I'm just taking a stab in the dark here. But I'll add this: A. Sometimes I get it wrong. Sue me. And B. Sometimes I know what I'm talking about and will comment about freakish pinfall because I watched it closely while I was editing the show and noticed something unusual that caught my eye. You do know, don't you, that the play-by-play is done AFTER I've edited the video. So I've had the benefit of being able to go back in and examine certain shots very closely -- even slowing it down to 1/30th of a second in some cases, advancing the footage one video frame at a time, or even going backwards to see if a certain pin is the one that caused the last pin to fall. Playing it in super slow-motion and going backwards, I can eliminate certain pins as the ones who did the dirty work. I won't usually make such a comment if I haven't already confirmed it. I'm like a detective on "CSI: Bowling Edition" when I start digging into frame-by-frame video analysis. You're usually better off taking my word for it. So I don't know why you're shouting, but I sure hope you feel better now. I know I do. :-)

It is possible that Christian's head movement at release is related to the position and or angle of his slide/plant foot? It often points left it may be that his head must follow his foot to prevent losing balance.

His head movement is a result of him trying to rip the fingerholes out of the ball each and every time he throws it. Plain and simple.

Nelson Burton Jr. always hit the line with his slide foot pointed to the left (and it's not because he was pointing the ball to the left). I've heard some people say they thought his slide foot pointing left was a problem. I don't really see it that way EXCEPT when he's shooting at right side spares. When you're going cross-lane from left to right, you want your shoulders, hips AND FEET oriented somewhat to the right to facilitate the change in orientation of the swing plane to accommodate the cross-lane shot. Christian doesn't make any such change. Not surprisingly, he's been whiffing a lot of right-side spares on the left. I believe that left foot is a contributing cause. Not THE cause, but one of several.

I was more of an Earl fan, because he was left-handed and I am left handed, he was from Tacoma, Washington, and I live in near Spokane, Washington. On the PBT, my favorite Littles are Hunter, Rowan and Matt. In the Bigs are Nick and Tristian. Thanks for the videos! Keep up the great work! I have not bowled in quite a while, but watching these kids, especially the littles, they are getting me to get back in it. I was a junior bowler myself. I hung out at the alley, than more what is normal for a kid. There was a group of us, more like a little gang, that would do anything to get more alley time. Sometimes we had to police the parking lot and get it up to snuff. Other times we had to clean up sweep and mop all 40 settee areas. It didn't matter cuz we got free bowling!!!

Chiefs first, Cowboys second. I grew up in KC and was there when they won Super Bowl IV. I've been a Chiefs fan since I was in school. I lived in Dallas for 25 years and was there for all five of their Super Bowl championships and worked at the Cowboys Radio flagship station and got to know Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and a bunch of their players through the years. For a while I lived in Valley Ranch, a block from Cowboys headquarters. Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstadt, Norv Turner, Butch Davis, Dave Campo and the rest of the coaching staff would come jogging every afternoon right past my apartment. I'd occasionally see them and holler out at 'em as I was out walking my dog.

He's won three. He was one of the three kids who won on our very first Bowlapalooza giveaway show in the Fall of 2016. He, Brandon Racioppi and Kara Freeman all won that day. Then he won on a three-person team format we did in early 2018 called Uno, Dos, Tres. And then a few weeks later, we held an event called the "Matchmaker Open" in which we awarded three spots in a Storm Matchmaker ball demo day. The three winners were Hunter Moffitt, Josh Doneghy and...well...ME. But because I was ineligible to win, the third entry into the ball demo day went to the 4th place finisher, and that was Nolan. So two of his wins came on shows where we declared multiple winners, and a third win came on a three-member team format. He is still looking for his first SINGLES title on PRODIGY in which only one winner is crowned. But you know, a win is a win is a win, and he's got three of them.

His bowling balls are all different weights. I think one is 10, one is 11 and one is 12. He has a new one he's getting drilled this week or next. It's 12. Blue Hammer. I have no idea how in the world he found it. They discontinued it a while back. The Blue Hammer (urethane) is one of the better balls for two-handers, expecially the little guys who don't generate as much ball speed as the bigs. I can't wait to see him throw it.

Yes, he found a 12-pound Blue Hammer Urethane. And you're right. I've heard that the 14, 15 and 16 pound Blue Hammer Urethanes are next to impossible to find now. My only questions is, with that many people looking for them, what is Hammer thinking by discontinuing it? There appears to be quite a bit of demand for it. I know of one person who has stockpiled a few of them for his son.
