Bruce Ames: Vitamin and Mineral Inadequacy Accelerates Aging-associated Disease

Most of the world's population, even in developed countries, has inadequate intake of one or more of the ~30 essential vitamins and minerals, mostly used as cofactors by the proteins/ enzymes of metabolism. A varied and balanced diet should provide enough vitamins and minerals; an unbalanced diet with too much refined food provides calories, but not enough vitamins and minerals. Triage theory posits that, as a result of recurrent shortages of vitamins and minerals during evolution, natural selection developed a strategic rationing response to moderate shortages so that the scarce vitamins and minerals are preferentially retained by vitamin and mineral dependent proteins that are essential for short-term survival and reproduction. In contrast, proteins needed for long-term health, which defend against the diseases associated with aging, are starved for the vitamins and minerals and thus are disabled. Moreover, since the damage from moderate deficiency is insidious, its importance for long-term health is not clinically apparent. Strong support for triage theory comes from the analyses of published data on proteins dependent on vitamin K and on selenium. Both of these vitamins and minerals have built into metabolism a triage-like trade- off between short-term survival and long-term health; each uses a different mechanism to accomplish this end. Mechanistic, genetic, and epidemiological evidence suggests that this metabolic trade-off accelerates aging-associated diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, and cognitive decline.
Dr. Bruce Ames is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, emeritus, University of California, Berkeley, and a Senior Scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and he was on their Commission on Life Sciences. Dr. Ames served on the board of directors of the National Cancer Institute, the National Cancer Advisory Board, from 1976 to 1982. His numerous awards include: the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Prize (1983), the Tyler Environmental Prize (1985), the Gold Medal Award of the American Institute of Chemists (1991), the Glenn Foundation Award of the Gerontological Society of America (1992), the Honda Prize of the Honda Foundation, Japan (1996), the Japan Prize, (1997), the Kehoe Award, American College of Occup. and Environ. What a wonderful presentation. And I agree, an engaging and stirling gentleman! The triage hypothesis is fascinating. I wonder however... of course a nutrient bar is much-much better than no nutrients, and I understand the purpose in supporting the health and nutrition of the poor who cannot afford nutrient dense food. But to what extent would someone miss out on the 'interaction effect' I.e. the notion that nutrients are more potent/more beneficial when whole foods are ingested because perhaps yet undiscovered (or indeed, known) nutrients play a symbiotic role?

Vitamins, minerals cannot be patented hence no profit, no market control. Vitamin D is a lot cheaper than a chemo-therapy. The crocked baloney system we lives works for profit built on lies. And there are so many naive out-here that are addicted to sugar. BS & fear sell well, truth not much. The proof is here, only 64k views for a 2014 clip, but a meme with stupid faces will have this volume of views in a month.

Great presentation, and funny. No wonder he has attracted so many talented people to work with him. This gentleman appears to be an increasingly rare gem.. High quality, durable and likable is a great combo.. Too bad that "science," as it is frequently practiced and represented, is not very high quality much of the time. Unfortunately, is it is subject to all of the frailties of human nature like any other human endeavor. Also unfortunately, it's self correcting mechanisms are sorely ailing at this time. "Follow the science" is a religious uttering. Mainstream science is dogma much of the time and many purporting to do science are just following the dominant and trendy dogma and coddling results and conclusions into existence. Real science frequently has an element of antagonism and iconoclasm built in. Some of its best practitioners are pushy, impatient, and unpleasant. Especially in today's world, that gets one fired and ostracized. Glad his ideas can now find a bigger audience. Who will listen?

In 2009 I saw a book about vitamin D deficiency symptoms at a bookstore. I had been feeling awful and just knew this was my issue and so went to a Doctor and asked to get tested. My blood pressure was high, thyroid messed up, had alot of muscle and joint pain. My Vit D3 was at 6ng. which is really low. I had even begun to get chondromalcia of my knee. I changed my diet to totally organic, quit grains, sugar, and ate grassfed animal products. I am almost 70 now and always talking about Vit.D to anyone I meet. My neighbor would not believe me and went to a specialist because of pain and feeling tired. His doctor tested him and said it was all because of his low Vitamin D.

In cancer pyruvate is not properly converted into acetyl co a which means krebs cycle can't run to make ATP, and also lactate builds up. Pyruvate dehydrogenase which is supposed to convert pyruvate into acetyl co enzyme a relies on - thiamine b1, FAD b2, NAD b3, and then co enzyme a needs b5 to be made. Cancer might just be multiple b vitamin deficiencies resulting in the warburg effect.

The laugh in the beginning is because that metabolism chart is so intricate and detailed that there's no way that you could learn 1/1,000th of that information in a 1 hour talk. I have to admit that I laughed too, which I didn't think anything of until I read your comment. But that laugh did set the tone for the talk, I think. Besides being a wealth of information and enthusiasm, Mr. Ames has a great sense of humor which makes listening and digesting the knowledge that much easier.

Thanks but I get nervous when experts list Folate as Folic Acid, 2 entirely different chemicals. Folic acid is the ADDITIVE humans ADD to flour by LAW. For younger people it’s not a problem as Folic acid is broken down to FOLATE which we should get naturally in our food. HOWEVER as we age we are no longer able to breakdown the Folic acid and it becomes TOXIC! So our governments have passed law that ALL wheat flour is to be fortified with Folic acid. Result a beneficial addition for pregnant women and a slow toxic additive for the elderly. Folic acid is NOT FOLATE
