In 1981 I left Cambridge Massachusetts to work in a hospital in San Francisco. It was the beginning of what would later be called the aids epidemic. But in those early years, we had no idea what it was. Several of my coworkers at the hospital died as well many of my gay friends. To live through that and now see our community being attacked is just the saddest thing. 🥺

Bruce's lyrics and composition can be compared to Bob Dylan. Imagery and feelings appear.🤙🤙🤙

This was Bruce's "comeback". After two lackluster records the previous year, Bruce recorded one of the most beautiful songs put to record.

Bruce played all the intruments on this. Bass, synthesizer, drum machine, and tambourine.

Springsteen captures a mood, and paints a picture in most of his work.

Thanks Biz. Bruce was asked to write a song for the movie on short notice and this won an Oscar. If you like the darker side of Springsteen, try State Trooper, Candy's Room or Racing in the Street 👍

Nobody nails a movie song like Bruce. This one, "Secret Garden" from "Jerry McGuire," "Dead Man Walking" from the movie of the same name, and "The Wrestler." He really connects with the story.

The final song from the movie is by Neil Young. You should listen to that one too. Simply called “Philadelphia”.

Neil Young's song for Philadelphia is even better than Bruce's IMO - Bruce himself said something to that effect around the time of the Oscars ceremony.

I love Bruce - but/and Neil’s song I think is much better- Musically totally haunting, and lovely line ‘I won’t be ashamed of love’

In a 2017 interview following the death of filmmaker Jonathan Demme (Stop Making Sense (1984), Something Wild (1986), The Silence of Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993)), Springsteen recalled struggling to get the song started at first: "I hooked up my little studio, and I tried for a day or so to come up with something," Springsteen added, "and I hadn't come up with anything." The director sent a rough version of the scene that helped him find the heart of the song: "Demme had sent me that opening piece of film where the camera moves slowly through Philly," Springsteen said. After that he finished the song in two days. Richie Havens dropped a cover of the song in 1997 that gets me every time I hear it. Great reaction Biz. It is beautiful dark sh*t that one plays when feeling some type of way. I'd submit that at times it can be beneficial to be in your feelings and get 'em out through music.. but also take your point, you don't wanna get stuck. To try more rollicking versions of Bruce, recommend She's The One or Pink Cadillac.

A great song and a great movie. As others have said, Neil Young's closing song is also wonderful. And I think this may have been Joanne Woodward's (who played Andy's mother) last filmed performance before she succumbed to Alzheimer's. In any case, she also had a long and illustrious acting career so this was kind of the icing on the cake.
